Flying Turns CONFIRMED coming to Knoebel's

Talk about anything that has to do with the amusement park industry here.
Postby [jonrev] on November 27th, 2005, 8:31 pm
Found this out today...

Knoebel's Grove to Build Flying Turns Ride Sharpshooters Productions, Inc. 11/13/2005
Knoebel's Grove Amusement Park in Elysburg, Pennsylvania announced during their annual Phoenix Phall Phunfest that they will be rebuilding a classic Flying Turns ride made of wood. Now that the secrets out of the bag, we at Sharpshooters Productions can share a few more details with you.

The ride will be based on Riverview Park's Flying Turns, with some modifications and additions. Our own Ralph Lopez provided them with the blueprints to Riverview's ride, as well as shared his knowledge of the rides construction, maintenance, and operation. The National Amusement Park Historical Association (NAPHA) also contributed Flying Turns blueprints from their archives.

Knoebel's has not officially announced when the ride will be opened, but it will likely be for the 2007 season. Keep checking back here for further details as they develop.

Are the flying turns they're talking about like the ones in RCT?

This info. is a bit old but good to hear...

Flying Turns are the old aviator rides simular to bobsled coasters...go on to google and type in Riverview chicago flying turns, in whatever order under images. These rides were supposedly more intense than the new modern ones.

Dick Knoebel said at PPP it'd be built in the original style, with a wooden trough and I believe he said single cars.

They should build a test coaster in the near future which would not open to the public, if it's successful and safe they will build a full scale Flying Bobs (and probably incorperate the test ride in I'd assume)

The final product if they can make it functional would probably be about at least a couple years off.

They are wooden, but dont they have steel sheets in the trough/track?

Its cool how they want the classic style and not modern. Its like SFGAm. having the infamous Riverview BOBS recreated

^SFGAm should do that. They should do the original design and not modify it at all like unlike what SFWoA did.

he was not specific, but I believe the orignal Flying Bobs did have a wood trough, no steel at all on the inside of the trough.

Track and supports were all wood. I've seen video footage of it on a Riverview video I got.

^That looks really cool! Not to go off topic, but those houses in the bottom corner look like the trademark to one of the major film production companies and i can't figure out which one.

Its like SFGAm. having the infamous Riverview BOBS recreated

If they were to ever do that, I would pass out. From what I have heard, seen in pictures, and watched on video, The Bobs would immediatly be in the top three of wooden coasters, and Great America would have an instant classic. A friend of mine who has ridden The Bobs, has rode several wooden coasters in the States, and he said that there is not one wooden coaster that can come close to The Bobs.
The only problem would be safety issues. It looked like you got slammed pretty hard racing through those fan turns.

I'm surprised that none of the rollercoasters at Riverview were relocated. Even the Jetstream, which was built in 1963 (and was the last new coaster at the park) was destroyed. Some of those rides would have been great at GAm.

Acually, the Jetstream was sold to Sherwood Park in Rockford. I beleive that insurance problems caused the coaster not being build, and from there, Sherwood sold the Jetstream cars to Carowinds, where they were used on the Thunder Road coaster. Whether or not they are still being used is a good question.

I'd love for the twisted BOBS to be recreated for SFGAm

I have a book all about Riverview, and they have an arial photo of the entire park in black and white and one in color. The layouts a bit odd for me to follow, but I may be looking at the wrong one :?:

You not looking at it the wrong way. I think I have the same book as you, and some of the coaster is under trees, so its hard to make out which way the track goes.

Scroll down abit on this page, and you can see just about the entire layout. This gentleman is pretty good at model building.

Keep in mind that when they began the Phoenix project in Jan and it opened on June 15. They broke ground on the Twister in late Oct and it opened at the end of June.

Lets re-create that bad boy and make it legal.

Bobs are cool though. Suprised they are even going this far with it.

It's for the cool kids.

*starts drooling* That is the most insane ride ive ever seen built. I cant believe nobody has even tried to replicate that yet. Some roller coaster company needs to make an exact replica of that and Bobs.

A furious storm once roared `cross the sea, catching ships in its path, helpless to flee. Instead of a certain and watery doom, the winds swept them here to Typhoon Lagoon!
