Six Flags Astroworld closing after 2005 season.

Talk about anything that has to do with the amusement park industry here.
Postby Chitown on September 12th, 2005, 8:13 pm
It wasn't really a low attended park and not really the reason for this decision..

The reasons for the closure are high property values in the area where they can make a good buck off of the sale, and the ever lasting parking nightmare.
I finally retired the Sarah Palin signature because she is now 100% irrelevant.

^Oh man thanks for telling me. SFA's land value has been mentioned for YEARS as being a much bigger guarenteed value than the park sitting there on it. Six Flags already annouced they will sell some land. I just hope they don't close the park next, because it's my homepark.
I don't know ALL the Facts!!!!!!

Well this park is sitting on high value land so go figure they are selling it. Hopefully some of the rides will get split up and St Louis will get one.. theyre in need of some upgrading.

You know, after this, I really wouldn't be surprised if the flagship parks, SFGAm, SFGAdv, SFMM, SFOT, SFOG, may be getting more then they bargained for next season... Not that I think this news is good, but as I never had any interest in visiting astroworld, I suppose it will be a good decision in the long run for corpotate SFI.

I think the closing of Astroworld is good news right now for the smaller parks. I think all of it's coasters will probably go to the smaller parks that recieve less capital than the bigger parks. Maybe a flat for us, but I can't see a used coaster going into our small land space.

While it's good SF is realizing they need to downsize, I wish they would try to sell some parks instead of leveling them. Think of all the kids who not knowingly will try to go to Astroworld next year only to realize it's not there.

Looks like Astroworld has become Houston's Riverview Park.

They should take out Jester's Wild Ride and put SWAT in there and call It Jester's Wild Ride 2.

Yeah, that was just for fun.

Although I second the Idea of SWAT coming here!

Here's how they could do it. they should get rid of the Go-Karts and Stargate, use most of the room for Waterpark expansion, but then use the room by Souveneirs to put SWAT up. and Relocate the entrance to STT back to the main plaza.

That's what they SHOULD do. I don't mean to start any rumors, but that would be very cool.

Or they could re-theme SWAT western style and place it in that huge open area between Chubasco and the Saloon.

Well, if this can be done in a major metropolitan area this can easily happen ANYWHERE in the country.

If this works well for the company, they are going to unload more than just AstroWorld.

Would there be enough room? I am not sure how much space is needed for SWAT.

Here's how they could do it. they should get rid of the Go-Karts and Stargate, use most of the room for Waterpark expansion, but then use the room by Souveneirs to put SWAT up. and Relocate the entrance to STT back to the main plaza.

That sounds like a great idea on paper, but that would cost some cash just to put in one ride. Not only that, but you would be losing a family ride in order to put in thrill ride.

Swat is gigantic, it takes up so much land. we're talking around 100+ feet long by about 50 feet wide (stats like that are unheard of for flat rides generally). I could see us getting it though, though i'd far perfer the spinning rapids ride :)

It was always my idea to build a Swat ride, put it in SWT and call
it Tumbleweed. It's a perfect name for that ride!!

Let's not start the Tumbleweed rumor again, but I agree about SWAT, though I have heard mixed feelings about that ride, some like it, others dislike it.
