Wow. I just got back from vacation, and I turn on the weather channel and Hurricane Katrina is all they're talking about. This thing looks huge! Winds of 175 m.p.h, could go as high as 200+ mph. Could this be the worst storm (or at least hurricane) ever? Yes Aero, please respond

I doubt winds will exceed 175 mph.

Hurricanes go through eyewall replacement cycles. Right now the storm is as strong as it will be. Forcast models are taking it back down to lagely catagory 3 with imbedded catagory 4 winds.

I don't think it will make landfall as a catagory 5, as landfall is defined as when the center of the eyewall passes over shore. The eyewall is huge and this storm is huge. It's going to start losing steam once 1/2 of the storm is overland.

I would be more worried in Buloxi and Gulfport as they are expecting surge over 20 feet. Waves in this storm were reported at 31 feet last night before I went to bed. So 30 foot waves on top of 20 foot surge is disasterous.

At the moment, outer squalls starting to effect the Mississippi river delta.

My prayers and thoughts go out to the city of New Orleans. They are saying that they don't expect this to weaken much.

^ Same here. I hope everyone gets out of there in time.

Yeah, I think we'll be losing SFNO. Maybe rides like the Jester might survive though.

Huh? Source? I've gotten every VORTEX (Raw code from the Hurricane Hunters and the max ground level winds were 175 mph this morining and afternoon. Since then, the eyewall has gone through a regeneration cycle and has weakened. Pressure has risen and surface winds fell to 160mph.

As of now, pressure is back down to 904 mb (Same pressure that would exist about 2,500 feet above us) and flight level winds are at 160 knots which corisponds to 184mph. Surface winds are still at 160mph however.

Huh? Source?

I beleive he got the info from MSNBC, which updates in a little box every now and then. I saw that it had the winds at 165mph, and gusts to 202mph. They may be alittle slow in update their info
Either way, it does not look good at all even if it drops to a catergory 3. Larry King is talking about New Orleans like it has died.

According to the National Hurricane Center's website, Katrina has a
top windspeed of 160mph with stronger gusts. I do think that the
storm will hit land as a Cat 5.

This thing has excellent rotation and looks so impressive by the
Satelite Image. With the pressure's as low as it is, this should
rank as #2 on the all time list of most intense Hurricanes to hit
American land.

#1 is a Hurricane that hit the Florida Key's in 1935 with
892mb and 26.35 in. (Cat 5)

#2 (unofficially) Katrina 2005, 904mb and 26.69 in. (Cat 5)

#3 Camille 1969, 909mb and 26.85 in. (Cat 5)

I also pray for all those who are going to be affected by this
Hurricane.

Tropical Depression 13 is on it's way already!

Katrina was at 902mb earlier today. I don't know if you are going off of pressure at landfall.

Katrina has the third lowest recorded pressure in recorded Atlantic Hurricane history at 902. Only the Florida keys hurricane and Gilbert have lower pressures.

Gilbert, however, did not impact the US.

Yeah. The table I was using was the table on the NHC's website
that listed most intense Hurricanes to make US Landfall.

Okay, because Gilbert had pressure recoded of 888mb before it impacted the Yukatan.

The reminant depression traveled right over the Chicago metro area from that storm.

Next year? This storm does not mean the end of the gulf coast. I'm not expecting Six Flags New Orleans to be open anytime this week, or possible the rest of the season, but it willl be open next year (barring any park closures on the executive scale).

Yes this is a bad storm, but humans are resialiant, we will build back.

Remember how long Manhatten was shut down after 9/11. It's compleatly back to normal now.

I don't think SFNO matters right now.

The people stranded on rooftops with 20 feet of water around them matter.

I agree. SFNO doesn't mean squat right now.

Who cares about SFNO when there are people that don't
have homes and are stranded. If all you care about is
SFNO, you need to get your priorities straight.

We need to be thinking about the people that are effected
by this Hurricane first!
