nationally, Bush was up solidly before the debate. after, Kerry caught up.

as for tonight, I'm not saying one man won or lost, but Edwards came off as much more approachable than Cheney. Edwards made little jokes while Cheney kept accidentally covering up his mic which made him sound muffled and distant. this doesn't have anything to do with their politics, but it does have an influence on how people vote (see Kennedy/Nixon). also, neither of them really addressed the camera until the closing comments at which point I noticed that Cheney was very shifty. when Edwards spoke, Cheney didn't know where to look or what to do. Edwards, on the other hand, kept his posture and eye contact much more constant.

How many of you have actually voted in any of these polls? I always wondered where they got the stats for these polls when there is no one I know who have voted for them.

How old are you? How old are your friends? They are polling likely voters (usually aged 35-65).

I am 16 tomorrow. I know a lot of people that are voting this year. I have family, my friends have parents, I have teachers. Not everyone is contributing to those polls, and that's what is matters. I do agree that it will be a close race, and I do know that I can't vote, but I do care.

you probably don't know anyone who has been polled because there are hundreds of millions of people in the US and only a tiny fraction of them need to be polled in order to get an accurate representation of people as a whole. take a stats class when you get to college, you might be surprised.

Yeah busch and chenny lost the debates in my opinion. If any of you watched the debate, for the vice presidents after one of the 30 second replies he's like i need more than 30 seconds for this reply and then shes like well thats all you have. It was pretty funny. What are your guy's oopinions

They are debates, no winners or losers in my mind. Something that the Democrats really have over Republican's this year is the ability to speak. George W. has gotten MUCH better at reading prepared speeches, but we all know he isn't a good speaker off the ball. in my opinion Bush and Cheney both did a fine job at presenting the facts. John Kerry in my opinion just bashed anything and everything that Bush has done the past 4 years while Bush laid out the facts and what he has accomplished. I really didn't like the first debate very much at all.

That's why I like Bush over Kerry.

I'm sorry, but what political race hasn't had people saying bad things about their opponant? that's the whole point. you say that your opponant is the wrong choice and you're the right choice. this is espcially important in a two party system where you don't have to get people to like you, you just have to get people to hate the other guy.

it may seem wrong to a lot of people (myself included), but that's the way it is. and don't think the Bush side has been a perfect little angle here, either. many bad things have been said about the Dems. so far and we can all look forward to plenty more.

as for winning the debate, I'd say its a toss up. I heard a good argument about how Cheney came off better and I have my own views on how I think Edwards came off better. regardless of what we think, though, its the polls that will show the real winner via public support.

His point is that Kerry isn't running on what he is, but what Bush isn't.

I was kind of just describing the debate, not the campaigns in general.

my points still stand. take the entire campaign and scale it down to the debates and everything still fits. the candidates still only need to convince people that the other guy is bad. and the Rep. side was still bashing the Dem. side.

it depends on the people in attendance. if they're intelligent and care about a wide variety of issues, its possible to get the answers to a lot of important questions. however, it could also turn into a he said, she said type thing, though I doubt the mod would let that happen.

who saw Bill O'Riely on the Daily Show last night? I've never watched his show before, but he came off as a very smart guy who could very possibly be an independant, undecided voter.

Hold on who was smart? John Stewart or Bill O'Lie-ly? If you are thinking that nut (O'Riely) is an "independent, undecided voter", you must have watched too much Fox News.

Ask anyone else here (other than Brad) and they will tell you that Bill is crazy.

(I didn't see him on the Daily Show, but I have seen him enough to know what he is.)
