How high is too high?

Yeah but they cant go too high or someone will die because of not enough air. Do you think after awhile roller coaster designers wont have any new ideas. Because they almost are too high and the cost will be too much after 500 ft. And There arent really any inversions that havent been invented yet.

Being 500 ft in the air is not going to cause you to not have enough air. People live in Denver which is a mile above sea level and you don't see any people living their drop dead because of lack of air do you? And thats 5280 feet above sea level so I don't think their will EVER be a problem of lack of air on a ride because it is to high.

Sorry to bring up an old topic. I should have left it to ilovethevu to do. But it would be cool to have a coaster that went down the side of the mountain wouldnt it. You could get so much air time, and get a nice view.

Well, a park would have to buy a mountain, and thats pretty expensive, and I dont see the U.S government investing in roller coasters.

I actually saw a POV video of a coaster in Germany. It looked like a bobsled coaster (it wasn't, but thats the best I could think of) and it was probably the longest video I've ever seen. The onride part was like 8 minutes long. It just went down a giant hill (or mountain, if you will.)

Actually, I don't remember the name of the coaster, but there is a coaster in Nevada somwhere that runs down the side of a very large hill, if not a mountain... I remember this because in one of those televised magic shows, Lance Burton was tied to the tracks, and just barely escaped from the track before the car passed over where he was just laying... so yes, something like that does exist.

Oh, and in response to the comment about the government not investing in a roller coast down the side of a mountain, I don't know. It might be a huge attraction if it was something very novel... and it could draw bigger support for the national parks. Now, before some flames me and says "That could never happen!", I want to say that I agree it is highly improbable, but it is NOT impossible, and it most certainly would be cool!

EDIT: Errr.... my mistake, it wasn't in a desert, I don't know where I got that idea, the coaster was The Desperado at Buffalo Bill's... still a cool feat, but I could have sworn that it was over desert landscape. Oh well...

Bolder Dash at Lake Compounce is kind of on the side of a mountain.

Boulder Dash is the mountain coaster. Look at Phantom's Revenge and that huge ravine that it drops into. Can someone say Grand Canyon? Plus I hear some rumors of a 500 footer being built for a certain person's retirement in '07.

I believe once Sky Fun one sold off their Sky Coaster division that planned 500 footer was scrapped. Thrilltime Entertainment says it would not come close to being profitable with very high initial cost and such low capacity, and likely low ridership.

There is a pic somewhere of a 180 footer in Colorodo that recently opened that is on the extreme edge of a large canyon, at the forward apex of the swing you are something like 2,100 feet above the ground.

That would be cool. Someone told me that their dad went bungee jumping off the grand canyon. If they did this, would it be a 2,000 foot drop or just 200.
