SALISBURY, Md. (July 30) - Sherelle Purnell's facial expression went from one of embarrassment to defiance as she puffed a cigarette and lugged a sandwich board sign that declared: "I was caught stealing gas."
The 18-year-old woman on Friday obeyed a court order that required her to stand for three hours in front of Gordy's Tiger Mart on Route 13, the store where surveillance tape recorded Purnell speeding away from a gas pump with $4.52 worth of fuel.
Purnell walked along the convenience shop's grassy storefront, as passing drivers honked car horns and made catcalls. She arrived 90 minutes late to her noon sentence, The (Salisbury) Daily Times reported.
AP Sherelle Purnell, 18, of Salisbury, Md., walks in front of the Tiger Mart gas station where she was caught stealing.
By the time she showed up, the crowd of people that gathered to watch her had dispersed. "There were parents who came with their children, wanting to teach them a lesson," said Jan Phipps, Tiger Mart store manager.
But a new crowd soon assembled, including some supporters. Andrew Black, who stopped by the gas station on his lunch break, converted an old beer poster into a makeshift sign, protesting high gas prices.
You Said It!
"What is this, the Middle Ages?" said Black, who criticized Purnell's punishment.
Purnell declined to comment Friday on her unusual punishment.
On April 4, Purnell filled her car with 2.78 gallons of fuel, then went into the store and asked a cashier the cost of a pack of cigars, according to court records.
Purnell decided not to buy the cigars. She walked out of the store and drove away without paying for the gas.
Wicomico County District Court Judge D. William Simpson on July 16 ordered Purnell to carry the sign after Tiger Mart's store manager persuaded prosecutors to seek the unconventional punishment.

They are not paying off his contract as show here.........
Cash considerations are cash neutral for 2004, with the White Sox paying the remainder of Loaiza's $4 million deal. The White Sox will pay $6 million per year on Contreras' deal that runs through 2006, with the Yankees picking up $3 million in salary and the remainder of his signing bonus spread out over the length of his contract.
Straight from Whitesox.com, Sox are paying most of his contract.
I don't think I could have seen a better sight when I woke up than Nomar on the front page of the sports page and the news that he was coming to Chicago. We didn't even have to give up a starter (Matt Clement) which really was awesome.

^I had my first two a day football practice today, and I wasnt hydrated enough. I started getting tingly in the hands and legs, it really sucked. But I only have one more day of this because I'm only a freshmen.
^ Well, I know what you're talking about. My brother is a senior, starting center. He ends up having 4 a day practice, because he has to come in early for O-line meeting. Then they have 3-a-day practice. I just cant wait til then
What's funny about the Cubs is, they were supposed to be the team to beat, and win the world series. Are you kidding me? I doubt the Cubs will even make it to the world series...Don't take it the wrong way but when I saw the Sports Ill. preview for baseball in the spring, I just had to laugh.
Alright even being a White Sox fan it's pretty obvious they're gonna have to play a bit better and have the young guys step up, and if they're gonna do it's gonna be without Ordonez and Thomas (and Everrett for now).
Sammy just hit a homer, so the game is tied 4-4 in the 7th. Then the Rockies pitcher threw an inside pitch to Ramirez, and the umpire overreacted and threw out Dohman, the Rockies pitcher. Then, after the argument, Clint Hurdle, the Rockies manager, was also thrown out of the game. Crazy Stuff, I tell ya.

They did have long term injurys like the Sox do now so I don't want to hear if if if. Sosa was out a month, Prior 2 months, Wood 2 months, Grudsy 2 months. Also been on the DL, Remliger, Hollandsworth, Goodwin, Gonzo, Mercker, and Ram missed a week with a groin injury and the Cubs are STILL 59-48.
Yes and if you can't already tell Cubs won tonight.
Ok, to settle all this Presidential stuff, lets get a good laugh out of it. http://www.jibjab.com . Click the Video On the main page that should have a Picture of KErry And Bush (animated) on it. Enjoy!
I love how all that John Kerry says to make himself look better, is he won 3 purple hearts. So what? Just because you got nicked up in battle doesnt mean you are going to be a great president.
White Sox pick up another mid season annuall replacemet, Robby Alomar.
Now if only we can get an outfielder for the rest of the year to play for Borchard..
