Hades goes vertical

Talk about anything that has to do with the amusement park industry here.
Postby UnBullievable on June 16th, 2004, 5:32 pm
There are some new pictures of Hades construction on Screamscape.com that are worth a look or two, especially an interesting look at the first drop, which appears to curve down and to the left before curving back up in a complete U-turn, similar to SOB's first drop. And from the framework, this is going to be at least 100 ft. tall, much more so than Underground, the only other underground wooden coaster. Oh well, you'll have to see for yourself. But it does look like one heck of a ride for now...

I cannot wait to check this thing out! This thing is one big step for Big Chiefs. Though we now know it's not an S&S Launch, it still looks awesome.

Few bits of info here, that is not the first drop and it's 91 feet tall. Probably shouldnt say much more but, the station for the ride sits on land aprox 100+ feet lower than the land that that turnaround sits on, if you do the math(91 foot turnaround + 100 elevation chance+that not being near the begining of the ride = :D )

Should be fun as long as it tracks right, not like SOB and most other taller Mega Woodies.

 Now THAT is what I call good use of terrain and one very long lift hill for a woodie!

Forgot something...

Station will be near the castle, on the other side of the park, for reference. It's a very interesting project, I cant wait to see the results, but by default I am expecting the worst just from the history of 150+ foot woodies. Hopefully i am wrong though, and I really hope I am :)

We are not saying it's going to be a bad coaster, it's just that most wooden coasters over the 150ft. mark are VERY rough and not too enjoyable.

American Eagle's drop is 147 ft. so does 3 ft. really make that much of a difference?

I said most wooden coasters, there may be exceptions but I personally think American Eagle is pretty rough and sometimes not enjoyable, and I got the bruises to show it.

in my opinion American Eagle is quite smooth and enjoyable, but a lot of the newer Mega-Woodies have had much different layouts than an easy out and back. A lot of newer woodies seem to have very tall, very banked curves in them which in my opinion makes for a more painful ride experiance.

If your riding a Strait out and back with a lot of strait up and down hills its not going to hurt as much as big downhills that turn too.

You all have to remember (though some of you probably arent old enough) Eagle's drop is no longer true wood track, back when it was regular wood track, it was downright awful. These days everything from about 1/4 down the first drop all the way to the beginning of the barrel is a Steel I beam with 2 wood laminates bolted to the top of it.

Also as a side note, alot of the mega woodies built recently really dont have such great layouts in general which can really let you notice any and all roughness you encounter, and smoothness can have alot to do with proper track maintaince as well, not to mention the trains (SOB could be glass smooth if it had halfway decent trains, and not that premeir junk that runs on it now)

I would certainly not discount Hades, not in the very least, just if it does turn out to be a bit rough(getting rougher as time goes by after it opens), we can't all be shocked and ask why :D

I hope that it isn't any bigger than Raging Bull because the guy that owns the park said that it was going to be the biggest coaster in the midwest.

So was Zues? If it were the biggest coaster in the Midwest it would be 421+ feet.

Sorry I have had no time. I work 8 hours a day and start at 5.30 in the morning then I fall asleep on my couch. But anyway, here is a UPDATE!

http://www.sfgreatamerica.com/gallery/album35

What was cool, was that there was no fence surrounding the construction. I could have climb up to the top or down to the bottom of the tunnel. I pictures are good, because I could get so close.
