Great America Idol gone?

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.

is it true? Has it been replaced for good? Or is the stage shared with two shows? I love GAI and was looking forward to going there Tuesday.

It always seemed popular especially an hour or so after opening.

It has been banished to the KIDZOPOLIS stage so that the KIDZOPOLIS employees can be driven to the brink of insanity. Sorry, but I just can not understand why anyone enjoys karaoke. For every one person that can kind of sing, there are 1,000,000 that make people's ears bleed.

So people will be singing to a bunch of little kids watching them? Great idea. Have to check it out Tuesday.

A more permanent show replaced it. It is almost as bad as the karaoke was though. It's called THG and they just sing 90 songs. I wish they just would've tore the stage down.

Haven't seen THG, but my impression of Great American Idol is that it was usually kids that were doing the karaoke, anyway, and they were usually the types that knew none of the actual lyrics to the songs, just the refrains. Fine by me that it's stuck in Kidzopolis, but yeah, I do feel bad for those workers and I think it's fair to say it's a concept that hasn't exactly flown.

I'm going to go ahead and be cynical here and say that most truly decent wannabe karaoke-ers have already been tapped by one of the many singing shows on TV or have a weekly bar event they go to for practice. I would estimate the chances of one walking by and being halfway decent at a Six Flags park are pretty slim.

Will say this: I enjoy the Bugs Bunny/Daffy Duck show in Mardi Gras. For a smaller show, it looks like it was well thought out and pretty fun.

One of my daughters is an excellent singer and killed at GAI today (I am a musician too, so I know what a good singer sounds like). Another woman complimented her as we were leaving. I agree the rest we heard were really bad, as was the case with the adults who used to do it.

Good on her, and on you. Sang choir for five years myself and have occasionally been known to rock a little Roy Orbison with the right friends around.

However, as you outlined, your daughter sounds like the minority. And, generally speaking, you focus on the majority. And the majority can't sing worth crap.

How ironic is that the singers at GAI (karaoke) can range from ok to those who do not know a word to the song. When we were on a cruise long ago, I hung out at the Karaoke and these singers sang like professionals! What a world of a difference that made compared to what they got at Kidzopolis.
R.I.P. Splashwater Falls and Space Shuttle America. Deja Vu, enjoy Idaho.

There's a place here in Milwaukee I used to frequent a lot that had karaoke every Thursday night. I happened to be there for it once, and my general experience was that they had a group of regulars who went and treated it more like a practice session than anything else. You could tell these folks had some singing background and kind of knew what they were doing. They also kind of had a rotation amongst themselves of going on stage, with only the occasional "I'm drunk and trying this" person or tag-teams getting up there on occasion. If the Thursday night regulars went on a cruise, I'd imagine part of the joy would be getting to do karaoke every night.

I also have a friend who has done cruise ship entertainment. I'd imagine that, when she wasn't performing, a karaoke bar would have been one of her favorite places to hang out as singing clearly is her passion and I'd imagine that just doing it for fun is both worthy practice and relaxing time away from the rigors of actual performances.
