Memorial Day

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.

Just wondering does anyone from experience or whatever think that the park will be busy on Memorial Day? Thinking about hitting the park that day.
Candy: What you lookin' at?
Otis B. Driftwood: I'm lookin' at you, mama.
Candy: Yeah, you see something you like?
Otis B. Driftwood: Maybe. I set my standards pretty low, so I'm never disappointed.

Think its usually hit or miss. I went one Memorial Day where it was empty, but I am sure some can be super busy depending on weather - and who wants to grill that day or not

I'm sure a lot of it depends on the weather. Take for instance Saturday. Weather.com says that it's going to be 71 degrees. That is terrible really for a coaster enthusiast because the waterpark probably won't have that many people compared to the regular park. So, everyone just jams into the regular park. Not only that, but they probably plan to open up Yankee Clipper (as I seen the boats in the thing), and Logger's Run, and considering 71 degrees, do you think many people will be on those rides? The next two days look warmer in weather, so thus the regular park shouldn't be as bad as Saturday.

Now, if you are a waterpark person, if you can brave cooler weather, the waterpark should be pretty empty because of 71 degrees. It might close earlier though because of the weather. I also think besides temperature that humidity plays a big part, but it's still only 71 that day supposedly.

The thing with Memorial Day is that a Sunday to me is more treated like a Saturday. The reasoning why I say that is because a lot of people are off Monday, so they don't have to worry about leaving early, and people that visit Saturdays should know how the crowds are on Saturdays compared to other days.

I don't expect Memorial Day to be a July day no matter what the weather because it seems to happen that after Father's Day, that is the time that seems to have more people coming into the park. July and early August though I see as the worst times of the whole year. I know people are going to say Fright Fest, and that is true also, but a reason why Fright Fest feels more crowded is because less stuff is open - meaning especially the water rides (A big portion of the park is water attractions - thousands of people).

I agree about holidays and weekends in most cases. Tuesday and Wednesday are my preferred anypark DOTW.

I am going to go on Saturday and bank that people are going to treat sunday like a saturday as mentioned above. I do not have high hopes as the weather is going to be really nice, but one never knows. As stated above, I have been to the park on memorial day when it is super dead and also when there are a ton of people. I would guess this year is a busy year but I have been wrong before.

Now, it's up to 75 for Sat in Gurnee. ^When I said that, I meant that Sunday and Saturday will be treated like the same way because of the day off Monday. Thus, Sunday should feel more crowded than how Sundays usually are.

Honestly, if you can brave the cooler weather, Saturday is a better day for the waterpark (as in crowds), and Sunday is a better day for the regular park. At 89 degrees, the waterpark is going to be mobbed Sun!

Sunday Hurricane Harbor should be insane. They're talking 105* heat index. As for Monday...it all depends on what people wanna do. I went memorial day 2010 and it was deader than dead. Last year was an average Saturday mid-summer crowd. There's honestly no way to predict.

To defend the chance of it being a bit less crowded, they are talking a *chance* for storms...

Raging Bull is only running 2 trains. The Teal Train is still not ready. Right now only two teal cars are on the ground next to the ride. Whizzer hasn't run all 3 trains at the same time yet but all 3 are on the ride and ready to operate this weekend. Demon is only 2 trains. No sign of black train yet.

^I have a feeling the Demon black train is going to get an ad. Ads are in the station once again for those spicy Frito like chips. Takego or something like that. Giant Drop has an ad now for Falling Skies (Tnt). For Giant Drop, it kind of looks right for that ride. The ad doesn't look so intrusive. Maybe, it's just me. It's not like Gum on Demon, or Karate Kid on Whizzer before.

^I really doubt it. I think that tv show started last year, and this is the 2nd season. TNT is putting up a lot of money to put their ads actually on the ride itself. They don't have to film it in the park at all. They could, but it's highly unlikely.

I didn't go back by Bull, but Whizzer had 3 trains today. Later at night, they had removed 1 of them due to low ridership.

Eagle now has all 4 trains on, but (huge surprise) went down to only blue side operations later in the day. It's no longer a "racing coaster" when only one side is open, and I always let Guest Relations know how I feel about that (NOTE: I also *always* give a compliment to an employee or something positive I experienced. I try to be complimentary when giving a criticism when I am there). Sadly, the 2nd set of trim brakes (coming out of the big helix) on Eagle blue were back ON.

X-Flight had about a 20 minute wait late in the day when my buddy and I rode. I didn't care, but he hasn't been on it yet, that's why we rode. It's a bit nicer after the sun goes down (but what coaster isn't?) I really felt the "it's good/meh" feeling from others who were riding it today. It's great to watch, but I don't think the ride itself will be one of the top rated coasters at the park, especially after the novelty wears off. I could see the park *rotating* this coaster somewhere else after a few years. My friend liked it, but felt the best thing about it was watching it from the ground.

When I went on it earlier in the day they were racing so I don't know why they only had the blue side running later in the day. Maybe due to low ridership? I say this because when I went on it earlier in the day it was pretty much a walk on till we were in the station.

We were there yesterday too. Didn't make to X-Flight Though :(. Billy, I tried to get ahold of you to let you know we were there. I had to take FB off my phone because it was corrupting my iphone. I also forgotto save your number. I wanted to ride X-flight but after we got off Demon, I didn't feel like riding anything else as I have a headache from Demon and AE. By the way, what has happened to my beloved AE? It was like riding on rocks. Made my shoulder hurt and my headache. I could have sworn i had just rode SOB!

Then TNT did their job. the advertising actually fits in the rides theme and doesn't look like a clown puked on the ride ala Stride.

i was at the park saturday... bull still has two trains running but the third one is underneath the transition track being put together now. I would imagine a few weeks before its on. viper was running OUTSTANDING probably the best ride ive ever had on it. Not to mention two trains finally.

Saturday was a excellent day in the park. Was pouring rain when we got there. Wife and kids were shivering. Took a while for everything to get opened up and tested but by 11 everything was open but dipper. Also saturday was my daughters first coaster rides! (shes 3) started her off on spaceley and i was not to sure how she was going to do. At the end of the ride when we stopped i looked at her and she had tears in her eyes and a death grip on the bar... as i went to get up and pull her out of the seat she had a complete and total meltdown not wanting to get off. She kept saying AGAIN AGAIN AGAIN!!! i about cried i was so happy! No line operators let us stay on and we ended up riding it like 7 times. Finally she compromised with me when i told her there was other ones to ride. She took whizzer like a champ but hit her head on the side of the car(dads fault). She wanted to go again after though so we did. Its nice to know i have a 3 year old coaster junkie in the making. So proud!!

@ coaster demon: ill be going back up in july and august ill let you know when.
