Labor Day Weekend

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.
Postby parkbookman on August 23rd, 2011, 9:15 pm
Hi All - New member here, but the 1974 groundbreaking of Great America kicked off my lifelong amusement park passion.

Anyway, moved from Chicago years ago and will be in town visiting family over Labor Day weekend and wanted to take the family to Great America. We can go either Sunday or Monday and wanted to ask all you experienced visitors which day might be better.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I think both days are normally very busy, but I'd guess monday would be lesser. Make sure you ride Iron Wolf before it closes!

I've only been at the park on Labor Day once. And it was packed. I would suggest Sunday, though the whole weekend is going to be busier than normal most likely.

I've debated going myself since it's the last day for Iron Wolf, but I know it will be crowded with minimum 1.5 hour lines for most of the rides. If you haven't been there in a while, it might be a decent trip with the help of a Flash Pass.

Sunday will be most packed. Monday will have everyone staying close to home because Tuesday is a regular day. Plus Mondays are picnic/BBQ days.

Plus they are offering that picnic buffet. I AVOID going Labor Day weekend. Ive gone on Labor day 2 years in a row and both Labor days, the park was crowded. queues extending far, food court packed...its just ugly that weekend. :x

I plan on going with a budy this year's Labor Day on Monday. Has it always been traditionally packed on Labor Day?

I'm hoping a chance of showers will scare people away this year. Worst case it'll still be fun and fright fest isn't too far away.

To answer your question, it all depends on the waterpark either way. If you want to go to the waterpark, you obviously would go on a non-cold day. If both the Sunday and Monday are warm days, in my opinion you go to the park on a Monday. To me, Sunday is treated like a Saturday because hey the kids have no school tomorrow whereas Monday isn't open as long, and the kids are going back tomorrow (Tuesday). Monday has shorter hours, but again for the longer hours on Sunday, you are going to pay a price -waiting in line longer. As they say time is money!

Also, if the park feels cold on either day (the temperature), think about the people that aren't going on all the water rides. So, if both days are cold, I would still pick with Monday.

Is anyone able to report what attendance was like on Saturday and Sunday (today)? I'll be there tomorrow and I'd like to know if it's a typical Labor Day Weekend (high attendance), or something is different.

^I was at the park for only a few hours on Saturday and it was not crowded at all. The front parking lot wasn't even filled all the way. It was great!!!! Bull, Viper, Demon, Eagle, and Whizzer we walked right on. Superman, Batman, and V2,were only about 15-20minutes. I was very curious as to why the park wasn't crowded on a Saturday especially on Labor Day Weekend.

Didn't you see the storms forecasted on Saturday? In my area, we got hit with a bad storm. It looked like a hurricane outside. There was no lightning, but the rain, and wind were really bad. It was purple on the weather map, and I don't ever remember seeing purple on the map. In some areas, it was green, some it was purple, some it was red, and some yellow. I had the door open, and the rain was coming in. I was looking at the Gurnee area, and there looked to be rain around there too. For people spending $200+ at the park, they don't want to pay money if they can't get on anything when the storms come. Would you pay a ton of money for a potential washout day? It's different if you have a season pass because you can in and out of the park anytime of the year, but not for oncers, or twicers.

This happened to us on August 20, where a big storm passed through in the morning. But it we arrived at the PERFECT time; all the rides had closed, but they all opened about 20 minutes after we arrived.

Anyway, we'll be there today. Do you think the sudden Fall-like temps and high winds will keep people away at all? (or will it just keep people from the water park?)

I was at the park Saturday, and it was all walk ons! 26 rides in, went on the Iron Wolf 4 times to say goodbye. The storms must have scared people away. But, it never rained from opening to when I left around 4:00, but it started pouring at 5:00.

Yesterday was quite nice. I think longest line of the day was 45 minutes on the Viper. Raging Bull, Superman, Batman, all were about 15 - 20 minutes.

Rode Wolf like 10 times, so all in all, a good way to spend Labor Day.
