Kings Dominion (August 2010)

Let us know how your day at the park was.
Postby BP317 on August 18th, 2010, 4:49 pm
KD feels very much like a poor mans KI. Walking into the entrance area it is much like KI but everything is smaller-scale. Unfortunately the park was a typical Cedar Fair experience, nothing too great. We knew going in that Volcano's capacity sucked, but in addition to that none of the rides were running at capacity. Intimidator 305 was running 1 train, all the wooden coasters were 1 train (which meant Rebel Yell was running 1 out of 4. Seriousley, come on Cedar Fair). Some of the rides didn't need any more trains, but some definitely did.
Also none of the air conditioning was on in Flight of Fear's building, it was 90+ degrees out and as you can imagine waiting in that line was not very pleasant. Also FOF's queue is lit with the work lights and you can clearly see all the non-working show lighting all around you, and the effects did not work on Backlot Stunt Coaster. Another thing that is frustrating is the wireless microphones combined with the fact that the ride operator must say "check" every time they check a restraint, So you end up listening to "check" over the speakers while you are waiting in line a few hundred times, and anything they say to someone everyone can hear. I remember them doing the same thing at Geauga Lake also, just seems very unproffesional (and annoying) to me.

Overall I think of Kings Dominion to be like Cedar Fair's version of Great Adventure. It's kind of the like the flagship park (CP/SFMM) but without the big-ness and infastructure of the main park. The new areas of the park, like around Dominator for example, have a very Cedar-Fairish type feel where its just pavement and garbage cans. You can clearly tell where CF has input new things, for example walking through the Congo area (which is pretty well themed surprisingly, even has dramatic African music playing in the bathrooms) then bam, out of nowhere, you are at a huge racecar themed coaster.

The good news is Intimdator 305 is an awesome coaster, much better than Millennium Force. The drop is very steep and has good air (although it has a very long trim, you can definitley tell they needed to slow the ride down because the 2nd half is so fast). The transitions are very smooth and no headbanging at all thanks to the new shoulder-strap harnesses and the ride is a positive g machine. Volcano, despite the bad capacity, did not dissapoint either and was just as cool as it looked. They also have a pretty sick Arrow looper that drops into a tunnel under the lake and it isn't too rough (in the 7:1 seat of course).

Nice

Cedar Fair = 100% committed to making all our parks look the same

Image
A bizarre looking entrance, these 5 windows are the only ticket sales windows

Image
There was one person working at the SP processing center, however this old lady was faster than any of the ride ops

Image
Intimdator 305 coasterdynamix model in the gift shop at the front of the park

Image
The entrance is just like Kings Island but smaller

Image
Dominator was down as we entered the park

Image
Ghoster Coaster was a very good kids coaster

The old Scooby Doo dark ride

Awesome Intamin launched SLC

Between Volcano and Hypersonic, I don't know what Paramount was thinking building such massive low capacity rides

Image
I really liked Anaconda, classic Arrow looper with an awesome tunnel in the middle of the lake

Image
Another shot of Volcano

Image
These seatbelts are on all Arrow coasters at Cedar Fair parks

Image
I found this sign really funny, at least TTD/Kingda Ka's signs say "it will safely reset and launch again." This one leaves the ending up to interpritation.

Image
The new shells are kinda lame, not any details at all (what else can you expect from the CF though)

Image
After really enjoying the Togo Standup at Canada's Wonderland I was looking forward to trying out Shockwave. The first half was great but the ending was way rougher than Skyliner.

Image
Found it funny they put that the ride opens late right on the entrance sign

Image
Shockwaves height requirement is that your feet must touch the floor

Image
KD's Drop Tower, which is named "Drop Tower"

Image
Their permit stickers are on the ride safety signs at the entrance

Image
Thank you KD for running 1/4th capacity (the ride was pretty good though, a lot smoother than Racer at KI)

Image
The south side of Rebel Yell was operating one

Image
Ricochet is a decent mouse, better than its brother at CW

Image

Image
This area reminded me a lot of that one area of Geauga Lake near the Boomerang. I think one of the flats in this area was relocated from GL also.

Image

Image
Not entirely sure why Paramount thought theming a wooden coasters station to a soundstage would look good

Image

Image
Hurler has the same layout as Thunder Run at SFKK and sucks just as much. Decent layout but very rough.

The main selling point for this park

Image
The bumper cars were closed as they were building a Haunt Maze

A train of happy riders returns to the station

Image
All gripes about 1 train op aside, this ride kicked a**

Image
All Cedar Fair queues look the same

Image
Thank you KD for running 1 train during summer on your new giga-coaster

Image
I305 puts Millennium Force to shame

Image
Welcome to Fort Kinzel...where we are too cheap to air condition our indoor queue during the summer

Image
...and too cheap to even try to maintain our show so we'll just turn on the lights in the building

Image

Image
Im sure this looked cool at some point

Image
Avalanche was missing its sign

Image
Apparently you should not ride this in fall if you are allergic to bees

Image
This was my first traditional bobsled type coaster. I've ridden the one at Great Escape (that used to at SFGAm) and Disaster Transport at CP, however those have different types of trains. These trains looked a lot cooler however the position in which you sit is very uncomfortable and the ride was way rougher than it looked, so sadly it was a pretty big letdown.

I was surprised that they haven't upgraded their outdoor food carts to take credit cards

Image
Sucked it up and waited in line for Volcano knowing the ride has terrible capacity

Image
Volcano is a mix of impulse and SLC, but is a sick ride and unfortunately it had a long line as I would have loved to ride it a few more times

Image
It was nice riding Dominator again, my favorite floorless coaster no question. Super quick pacing and intense elements

Image

Image

Image
Was surprised to see the Spongebob simulator ride was still there, so we gave it a spin

Image

Image
This Grizzly is much better than CGA's, not too rough either

Image
The line on the right is for front row, with 1 train. No thanks.

Image
I don't quite understand why they didn't repaint Dominators loop, looks quite bizarre

Thanks for reading

Did you gray out on the first turn of I 305 or is that fixed with the trims?
