Illinois VS Wisconsin

A Off-Topic forum to discuss things that aren't related to the Amusement Park Industry.

Yet we still manage to have the highest graduation rate in the US ;) (87.5% according to a 2007 Census). Illinois was only 77%. Not to mention, Wisconsin has be mentioned to have the best business climate in the US.

In the big picture I like living here, not so much the town I live in, but overall the quality of life is good. I really like the laid back lifestyle, and this doesnt mean that I enjoy getting drunk, eating cheese, and watching TV all weekend. When I am around the Chicago area I always feel like I am being rushed be other people and these people are usually a**holes. I can't tell you how many times I have tried to politely ask someone for help in public without being ignored and getting confused for a criminal. Like one time I asked a woman where the nearest Dunkin' Donuts was and she starts screaming at me and and freaking out...thinking I was going to attack her. Now this was at 10pm in a parking lot but it still shocked me. Now I pretty much go down knowing that I wont get help I need from anyone and that there is no such thing as stranger small talk

I do kind of like the fact that around where I live, if my car were to break down I have confidence that I would get help from a nice person. And that if I am in a public place I can make small talk to genuine and polite people. Yeah it might not be as glamorous, trendy, or big as Chicago but it is a good place to call home.

^ You bring up a real good point about the general attitude around the Chicago area. Living in Central IL my whole life before moving here, it was a real shock. The idea of small talk, helping a stranger and even asking for directions was no problem. Up here, we have met one person that went out of their way to help us with my fiancee's car. This was after 2 hours of sitting in the McDonalds parking lot and the building refusing to give us a phone number to call a mechanic. It's just weird to see people act that way.

One thing WI has over IL is the state's identity is not just one city. IL = Chicago to most people despite the fact this is an agricultural state. Through my life, meeting people in non-neighboring states would ask how close I was to Chicago. When I would say 3 plus hours, there were confused.

The best part of Wisconsin is leaving it.

And last but not least... Wisconsin sucks so bad that Brett Favre had to leave.

BAHAHA, agreed. Though, Wisconsin isn't all that bad, but I much prefer Illinois. I liked Door County, but that's about it.

Here in Illinois, we have the awesome skyline of Chicago, the Chicago Bears (though they are kind of embarrassing lately, but I still love 'em), the Cubs (puke), the White Sox (they may not be so great either but I am a fan and hey they are 2005 World Series Champs)... what else do we have? I guess I have a poor argument, but that's just my opinion, I'll always love Chicago and Illinois. I plan to live here for the rest of my life.

Yes, we do have some negatives... tolls are just plain evil, road construction is ridiculous, we just got rid of a corrupt Governor... what else am I missing? There's probably more that I can't think of. But I don't look too much at the negatives, because it is just a part of life... and it's better to look at the positives, while possibly trying to fix the negatives. Yeah, it would be nice if there weren't any tolls, but that's just life. I like Illinois because it is my home, and I can't imagine living anywhere else.

^It's too late...its been quoted :P

Another thing I do like about Wisconsin is the recreation. There is a reason why people from surrounding states come here ;) There isn't much to during the Winter in Illinois. But in Wisconsin there are always activities and winter events going on. Every year near my house there is a winter festival (outdoors) and it is always a fun time.

Every time I come to visit my friends down in Chicago when it is snowing I always ask if they want to do something outside. The usual responses are "Its too cold", "Its boring", and "I don't want to get wet"

You know what I hate most about Illinois?

The thousands of people that drive on my free highway every single weekend creating traffic jams because they can't stand hanging out in their god-forsaken state each weekend.

Also, whenever I travel to Illinois I always mess up how much things are going to cost because of your damn sales tax increases.

Oh, and construction.

And Galvan, I'd like to point out to you that Chicago was actually Milwaukee's suburb when the two cities were founded, and the only reason Chicago grew the way it did was because of railroads. I'm personally happy that it ended up that way though, cause I wasn't raised around jerks.

Additionally, have any of you driven through central illinois? A nice drive through central Wisconsin isn't much better but atleast we have trees and the occasional turn. I can't think of a worse way to spend an afternoon than driving through Illinois.

Having grown up in Chicago and lived in LA, I can relate to this :)

Wisconsin has some hills and cool looking rocks formations also. Illinois, Indiana, and Nebraska are the most boring states in terms of terrain i've ever driven through.

I grew up a big White Sox and Blackhawks fan though, if it werent for those the state of IL would be dead to me (and the L tracks above the streets which looks cool at least ). But in socal/Florida I can play roller-hockey in the park all winter so that makes me miss being in Chicago during hockey season a lot less :)

I thought Indiana and Illinois were boring for driving...until I drove from Edmonton to Winnipeg. We left the West Edmonton Mall at 7pm and got to Winnipeg at noon the following day. We only stopped the car a total of 1.5 hours (gas, food, bathroom, ect). Once you get out of Edmonton there is NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING until Saskatoon. When you get to Saskatoon you realize all businesses close at 9pm (no 24 hour service). Then there is nothing the rest of the drive until you get to Winnipeg.

Saskatchewan is the flatest region in North America.
Check this video out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCL9GRerPOI

Could you do that for 14 hours with no service between 9pm and 7am and no rest areas? Also, gas stations don't have card readers out there...so you have to plan your gas very well or you will run out in an area with no cell service. Not to mention, you see more moose then cars *seriously*

I believe you forgot about the Blackhawks. I'm convinced that people in Chicago still don't know who the Blackhawks are. Might take a few Stanley Cups to fix that. With that, Wisconsin doesn't have an NHL team, though I do think the fan base is here to support it. Those fans at Admirals' games are very dedicated to the team.

Yep...I'm a dedicated Admirals fan and season ticket holder myself! I just don't think there would be enough fan base for a NHL team here. Also, I think there is some sort of territorial rule that wont allow to have team that close to each other. But I am a Calgary Flames and Nash Predators (Admirals affiliate team) fan.

Yeah, you are better off going through the Dakotas and just going all the way to Seattle. Then going through the Canadian rockies up to Edmonton (Seattle is only like 5 hours from Silverwood). If you have someone else in the car the drive can go by pretty fast.

After going to Alberta, it is now my favorite province. Ontario sucks... :S

Their Baseball Team Doesn't Suck

The White Sox have won 3 world series, the Brewers have won 0. Also the Brewers have consistently been irrelevant in the past 20 years winning only 1 division title while the White Sox have 5.

Plus the Bulls have 6 NBA championships and the Bucks have 1.

You said "a baseball team that doesnt suck." The Brewers do suck, they are the textbook example of chronically being irrelevant. Even the Cubs have won way more division titles.

Sorry Justin, being a Wisconsinite that thinks our state is vastly superior to our neighbor's from the south, I'd probably disagree with some of the things you had in there.

And being a Brewers fan practically forever, I'll say that until Baseball puts a cap on salaries, Milwaukee will always have a team that won't make it to the world series.

Luckily there is no Chi-Town in my family ;)

I do like Wisconsin for short distance get-aways.

My father used to own a trailer at a camping resort near Janesville on Lake Koshkonong and I spent alot of weekends up there. I also enjoy the Dells and the Brat Stop in Kenosha.

As far as living there? meh, I guess it would be cool but at the same time I am sick of all the bullshit that is going on in the Chicago area where I grew up at. High taxes, very corrupt government, crappy winter weather, paying tolls on roads that have and will always continue to suck.

But I do like Chicago. Lincoln Park zoo, museums, Shedd aquarium, the skyline, etc.
Suburbs: Brookfield zoo, SFGAm, Railroad museum, Waukegan harbor, Wildwesttown, etc.
I finally retired the Sarah Palin signature because she is now 100% irrelevant.
