Illinois VS Wisconsin

A Off-Topic forum to discuss things that aren't related to the Amusement Park Industry.
Postby tp41190 on October 21st, 2009, 6:13 pm
I am really bored in class right now and I just thought of this. It seems that there is a even amount of members from both states so this could be fun. Just don't start flaming for no reason about why your state is better...no one really cares on SFGAmWorld.

I would just like the say that roads in Wisconsin are in much better shape then in Illinois. Not to mention, they are free the drive on :D Personally, I don't think I should have to pay $5 total to visit a friend in tolls just to drive on some crappy, pot hole filled, one laned, coned filled, traffic piled, asphalt.

So how many other differences can you think of?

After one winter here, I am missing the country and dirt roads on central IL.

I will say WI roads were very nice. However, it was the single most boring drive I have ever done. IL also has Steel coasters made for adults :)

Illinois blows. Terrible roads, construction all summer then the roads re-open in worse shape than before, corrupt politicians, excessive tolls & taxes, traffic. The only redeeming factor since I grew up in Chicago is the sports teams. I will admit after living in Kenosha that Wisconsin is a more chill place to live.

The main problem living in Wisconsin is the rest of the country views you as overweight white trash downing beer and wearing cheese hats :).

Well, Wisconsin has the closer State Fair.
"I've been staring at the world, waiting. All the trouble and all the pain we're facing. Too much light to be livin' in the dark. Why waste time? We only got one life. Together we can be the CHANGE. So go and let your heart burn bright"

 My friends from Chicago always make fun of mine. A lot of it I don't even realize. Like saying bag, milk, bagel, sorry, out, and about. Also MIlwaukee here is pronounced MUH-waukee. Although Chicago does have a bit of one too. I hear people from down there say Wes-CAHN-SON. And THE WORST use of a word..."pop"!

The one thing I do like about Illinois though is the amount of opportunity. It seems that someone could graduate college and easily find a good job. Its kind of hard here when there isn't much around.

But most of that is true minus the white trash part.

Just remember this.... Milwaukee is a Northern Suburb of Chicago.

The best part of Wisconsin is leaving it.

And last but not least... Wisconsin sucks so bad that Brett Favre had to leave.

I grew up around Chicago and now I go to school in Milwaukee, so here's my input:

I've never noticed much of an accent, at least around the city. Those from northern Wisconsin have some kind of speech impediment though.

All Wisconsinites do have an interesting vocabulary though. What the hell is a bubbler? Even the spell checker on Firefox flagged that. If it sprays water, it's a water fountain. Also, why is "pop" such an odd word?

Also, why must you people complain about paying to get in and out of Illinois? You don't have to use the tollway, but apparently you just get lost going any other way.

Finally, I'm surprised neither of these terms have been exchanged in this thread: cheesehead and FIB. Go to urbandictionary if you don't know what a FIB is.

It's a north central accent. You go anywhere from Milwaukee to as far north as Winnipeg, and then as far west as North Dakota you will hear the same accent.

Bubbler was a word used to describe a drinking fountain that would constantly be running. And back in the day it would flow upward, giving the look of "bubbling" up.

And pop is just wrong. Pop should only be used as a verb. However, if you say soda-pop that is acceptable anywhere you go :D

Its the fact that if you dont live there, you dont know how to get around...simple. And if your driving on a trip you will take the interstate. And personally I dont think that its fair to charge people to use it. It is in the state of Illinois. The people of Illinois and there taxes should be responsible for taking care of it. And the fines are insane. Also blocking off the cash lane to a toll plaza, then giving people no choice to but to go through the I-Pass, then getting a $70+ ticket is bullsh*t. Also, I-Dot has NO way for you to contact them to fight your ticket. Which is a scam.

Also having 10 miles of "construction zones" with 45MPH speed limits, and having cops sit there is a speed trap. Those zones have been there for years, and most of the time there is not a SINGLE worker working. How is that a construction zone?

Lets keep it that way

Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson says her office has received numerous complaints from residents hit with fines - that can easily amount to hundreds of dollars - for scofflaws tagged to cars they didn't own at the time they were photographed not paying Illinois tolls. "It is unfair for the tollway to place the burden on Minnesota citizens to correct the errors of a faulty system," Swanson said in the letter to Gov. Pat Quinn and tollway officials.

The roads/tollway alone make me want to leave. Its completely out of hand, does anyone know if Illinois still owns the tollway? Not long ago I remember the government was interested in selling it, after all it worked so well with the parking meters in Chicago.

The Illinois tollway reminds me off an evil bully who took over the playground trying to get as much lunch money as he can from poor kids who don't know any better and have no way to get around him.

Seriously, I think Illinois residents should be the only people that have to pay. If Illinois messed it up in the first place, let Illinois fix it. It would be different if I could actually see my money be put to use and if I could actually see progress on the roads. There has been NONE in the last 3 years.

It would be nice if this were the case for all states, would make trips out east less expensive :).

I figured you were cool considering the smileys scattered throughout your response. That was directed at those who are not quite so quick at thinking, and by that I mean Wisconsinites :P

Here's my input on the tollways: I don't like paying them any more than anyone else. Illinois residents are subject to the same bs that everyone else takes on the tolls, and we even take more of it since we use them more. I've read articles about certain tollbooths that don't scan I-PASSes correctly and then ticket the drivers, so it could be worse. We do get to pay half price (or something, they've screwed with the tolls since I last checked), assuming you Wisconsin drivers don't have an I-PASS.

As far as the tollways go, I boycott them. For at least the past 5 years (maybe more, not keeping count), if I go anywhere in IL, I get to my location without taking the tollway. In fact, I set my GPS up to avoid the tollway. I would rather have my trip be longer, or sit in traffic then pay to drive on the tollway.

I'm glad I found out I-pass works with E-Z pass and such and the only tolls we pay are I think Ohio because of the get-on, get-off thing and Canada/US border
