I am curious to people's thoughts when New Coasters come in to play and parks go to the ZONING Boards to get Height Variants, and things like that! The Main topic that always comes up is Near by Residents complaining about Height and Noise!? What are your thought's, do the neighbors have a right to complain about noise?
My Thoughts: NO! The Theme Park was opened in 1974, now i am willing to bet not every home within 2 or 3 blocks each way are the original home owners that lived there from 1974 and on.
This is an issue of, You bought this house, knowing it was 1 or 2 blocks or facing Six Flags Great America, You had where well aware that Six Flags was right there, you knew it was a theme park that would have screaming fans, and you know fans love bigger and faster rollercoasters.
So no, i do not believe they should have the right. You knew moving into that house what was right in your front yard. You knew all of these things when you moved in, and you obviously ACCEPTED the fact that its a Theme Park, with rides, and happy screaming fans with large Rollercoaster's.
its like living by a movie theater or video game store then having a fit when some thing comes out because people are blocking the way to your house. The know the park is there, they chose to live there so no. they have no right to say anything. I for one would love to live 2 blocks away from Six flags I would be there every day.
Not long ago I lived a few miles away from Disneyland and could hear the fireworks from my apartment every night at 9:30 and make no mistake they were loud. You could hear them from Fullerton which is a distance from the property. I can see why some people would be frustrated because they are trying to sleep and all of a sudden BOOM BOOM BOOM for 15 minutes. But in perspective firework shows keep people on the property longer which means they stay longer which means they spend more which means more tax revenue. So in my opinion if you want the city to get the tax revenue from the business shut up and support the business .
Yes, that i understand. If you are a park that has never done fireworks before and then now you have LOUD fireworks, i can see the park complaining! I can also see if a park add's a new ride that is high or loud but i also still think you should not have a choice in the matter. Whether you lived there before the park or after, at some point, you made the choice to live near the park, or allow the park to be built there, knowing it will possibly grow!
Thanks for all the input! i brought it up because me and a friend where debating why Six Flags Should have to get certain types of Noise or Size Permits! You chose to live near the park, you live with Tall Rides or Loud Noise's!
Can someone also Remind me what kinds of Stuff they would need to go to the zoning board for? I understand there is something about Rides/Coasters not being Taller then Sky Trek Tower!
I Personally feel that is a Reasonable Height for our park. The Noise i feel however, should not be an issue as i said, its your choice for moving there!
Anything over 125 feet needs a height variance from the zoning department. Also no metal silverware or metal trash cans in the picnic grove. Other than that same rules apply to them as do apply to other businesses.

I can see the only sincere complaint is that you live in some location right now, and they put an amusement park there. Those people have a legitimate reason to complain. If Kiddieland was plopped down in Schaumburg, those people do have a right to complain because they live there, and an amusement park is coming to there (which it's not, but this is an example). However, there could be some people that have owned a house for a long time in Gurnee in which the amusement park came after they had the house.
However, I don't see the reason why the people just don't get sound-proofing windows if it's about the noise. Some people got them for free because of being near O'hare, and the noise it makes, but to me it's not much of a big deal.

V2 needed 2 Variances, one for each spike. SFGAm has never been turned down when asking for a variance no matter how many pitchfork and torch bearing locals show up at the meeting.
pretty sure 365 is the absolute max height the feds will allow SFGAm to build in this location.

They have a right to complain? NO They do not, They should have COMPLAINED when the park was being built! They had a chance to keep the park away and they did not act, so now they must live with it, move away or get sound reduction windows!
^If they were living in their houses before 1976, they have every right to complain. They go to the board meetings all the time rejecting things. Gurnee always sides with the park because it's a revenue generator.
For the people that moved in after 1976? Screw them!!!!!
I finally retired the Sarah Palin signature because she is now 100% irrelevant.
I think 330 is the tower height(not including the flagpole). I'll clarify next time I see this guy I know who's had to change the bulb before in the beacon on top of the flagpole. I seem to remember him telling me it was 364 feet and a bunch of inches to the beacon.

Having been up there to help change the flag, if I recall correctly the top of the tower is 330 ft. without the flagpole.
It is my understanding that while the park has an agreement with the city not to build over the height of STT (which they usually refer to as 330ft.)
Here is the landing directions for Waukegan RWY 05 (Roughly in line with the park) I'll have to look later where the park falls in nm from the runway threshold. http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/0910/05324R5.PDF
Don't forget there are rules in place to appease the noise complaints. For example, I'm fairly certain SFGAm cannot operate they're rides past midnight.
^ Part of that is noise complaints and part of it I believe is IL state law which is not having the proper paperwork on hand for the day saying that this ride was inspected, tested, and ready to go. At midnight, the park would have to have the next days paperwork all filled out....which I think is another big reason why they stopped having 11pm closes at FF on Saturday nights.
