Ride Warriors Weekend at KI May 8-10

Let us know how your day at the park was.
Postby monsterfan99 on May 11th, 2009, 6:18 pm
Hey everyone. This last weekend my fiancee and I made the 6 hours trek to Kings Island. The report might be a bit long, but will be somewhat detailed. I will try to use a bullet point style for ride reviews and event reviews to make it easier to read. I also plan on doing one post for each day, so there will be 3 different post.

Friday we left at 3 am central time to try to get there for the passholder ERT the same day. The first problem of the trip was I forgot about the time switch. We missed the ERT but did get there before opening and passes were processed. I love the fact that you can enter all your info online and just get the picture taken at the park. Processing time was less then 3 minutes.

Once in the park we noticed the sheer amount of kids there. This would be an on going theme the whole weekend. We started the day with Invertigo in the front row. Even after walking there as the rope dropped, there was already a 20 minute wait behind us as we got on (only a 2 cycle wait for us.) The ride was fine, not that rough and going through the loop backwards was great. Here was the rest of our day:

Flight Deck - Was a 2 train wait for the front row. Is was my first suspended coaster and quite an enjoyable time. I had low expectations and the ride shocked me.

Son of Beast - We hit the front row as the line for the back was awful. Still about a 20 minute wait. This ride sucks, at least in the front, plain and simple. The drop out of the station was the only part I enjoyed. To quote my fiancee "I closed my eyes because it felt like the ride was going to shake my contacts out." I can only imagine the pain when the loop was there.

Adventure Express - We walked on the front row. The ride is an arrow mine train. Not much more then that can be said other then it kicks the crap out of the River King Mine Train (I never pass on the chance to insult that ride.) I did enjoy the themeing on the ride.

At this point I bought a ticket to ride the Sling Shot upcharge ride. All weekend, except Saturday afternoon, all upcharge attractions were only 5 bucks. They told me the ticket was good all day so I skipped the over an hour long line to use the ticket. From here, we walked over to Nick Universe due to the long lines on everything big.

Fairly Odd Coaster - We walked on the last 2 rows. This ride is a fun little woody. Like the Little Dipper at Kiddieland, the ride gives a bit of surprise airtime on the first drop.

Scooby-Doo and the Haunted Castle - I loved the Scooby-Doo dark ride at SF STL so I figured this ride would be amazing as well. The ride sucked. I am not sure if the guns we had were broke or not, but there was no shooting sound or light coming for them. So basically, we had no clue where we were shooting. On top of that, the ride broke for about 5 minutes while we were on it (was not a special need loading either as we were by the station when it happened.)

After that we hit the Lazytown Skycoppters, Fairly Odd Coaster in the front 2 rows (walk on again) and Plankton's Plunge. At this point we hit lunch for a half hour. There were a good number of rides closed due to the high school students being at school.

Flight of Fear - After lunch we came back into the park. We wanted hit the Racer, but the blue side was down. Instead we chose Flight of Fear. First of all, I love the que for the ride. The fact the play a mock radio station before you enter the ride building helps the ride and provides entertainment. The UFO inside is great as well. Second, the launch is loud. How the ride-ops can stand next to it all day without holding their ears is insane. Finally, the ride itself was great. We had about a 30 minute wait to get into the station and another 10 for the front row. The ride is powerful on launch, very little roughness at the beginning and just fun overall. Probably should have just waited for Sunday's ERT was my thought at the time, but was glad I didn't. More on that later.

It was around 4:30 and we decided to check in at the campground and take a nap. Considering I had no been asleep since 3 pm on Thursday, it was needed. We returned to the park around 8 and there were almost no lines. We walked on Fairly Odd Coaster.

Rugrats Runaway Reptar - My fiancee really wanted to ride the ride earlier, but it was closed due to no staff. We waited maybe 5 minutes for back row. The front row had a wait of over 20 minutes. Not a bad ride for what it is, just not worth a wait.

The Beast - I have always heard the Beast was best at night, so we headed for the ride. It was night, but still a nearly full moon was out. We had a 20 minute wait for the front row. During said wait, it started to rain. When we got on, it was a steady rain up the lift. The ride was insanity. It was competently dark due to the rain clouds and pouring rain. This was the best ride of my life. As long as I live, baring brain injury or medical condition that messes with my mind, I will never forget this ride. If this that was my only ride of the weekend, the trip would have been worth it.

Backlot Stunt Coaster - It stopped raining after we got off. My fiancee really wanted to ride the ride. A fun little ride with some force entering the helix. A fun little ride in the dark.

Vortex - This ride was next. Was a fun little Arrow looper. The first drop is amazing airtime. Rest of the ride is good but not great. Fun in the dark as well,

Slight Shot - We we running to get to this to use my ticket from earlier in the day. The inital launch is great. However, when it is settling it sucks. I don't mind being up side down, but being thrown around like a rag doll sucks. Still well worth the ride doing as the fireworks start.

We had an amazing day and headed to Wendy's for dinner. We got back at the camp ground at 11 pm and had to get up at 5:15 am to get to the park by 6:30. for the next day. Day 2 coming next.

I can only imagine the pain when the loop was there.

The loop was the smoothest part of the ride, though from what I hear the Gerstlauer trains are smoother than the old Premier ones.

We waited to try to Sling Shot sunday night but it was $15 when we checked, and a 40 minute wait. We did see it for $5 on Friday though but I don't want to do that in the rain again!

I also agree the kids on Friday were pretty bad, being Math and Science day. They were also all on super hyper mode or something. The rest of the weekend wasn't so bad though.

We walked on Beast several times Friday night. They had one train op for a little bit the line was so short. There was a 5 minute wait for trains to return, was so exciting!

Day 2

Waking up at 5:30 am was a joy after the day before  but well worth it. We got to the park around 6:30 and the line for check in was about 20 minutes. The thing that struck me is they did not check the membership cards when we checked in. Not that it is a big deal, but seemed odd. We got our drink wristbands (which are amazing by the way) and lanyards and off we went.

By time we got our passes scanned, we just missed the 1st walk back group to the Beast. No biggie as we only had to wait 5 minutes. The morning ERT schedule was The Beast 7-9, Backlot Stunt Coaster 8-10 and Vortex 8-10. They also had passholder ERT on The Beast and Diamondback 9-10. From what I had heard before the event, passholders doing the event were to pick. Much to my delight and joy, they got to do both which meant no lines on the other 3 rides. Our morning ride count was

Beast - 7
Backlot Stunt Coaster - 4
Vortex - 3

That includes getting pictures of as much of the rides as I could (about 150 pics from the morning ERT) and walking to and from the rides a few times. Vortex and Backlot literally were sending empty trains during the last hour. On the positive, I made 62 cents in change from the seat next to me on Vortex. With about 10 minutes left, we headed towards the path to Firehawk.

Firehawk - At 10 am we made the dash to Firehawk. Already there was a 15 minute wait with both trains running. The ride looks nice and fits the area. However, the ride was awful. As much as I think Superman is boring, at least I feel safe on it. Firehawk left me shaking my fist at the Vekoma logo on the restraints as I left the ride.

Scrambler - Next I walked over to the scramble as I was waiting for ERT the next day on Flight of Fear to re-ride. This is where my problem with line cutting happened. In a one cycle wait, I was cut in line by kids and a parent that was with them. Simply amazing people cut on the Scrambler and the best part was there was no reason to. The ride had 3 empty cars when it started. The ride was ok, but felt smaller then the normal Scrambler.

Dodgem - From here, we walked to the Dodgems. I feel spoiled that I live by Great America and the Rue le Dodge as most ride like this are awful compared to it. This one was no expectation.

Kings island Train - Lines were already getting long here and we went to the car for lunch. Once back, we hit the train. The ride itself is nice and long. Only bad part is the music they play. I'm not sure why any train should play Cotton Eye Joe. It was fun to actually see part of the rapids ride. Normally I like to ride a train twice for pictures, but not many photo-ops here.

Beast walkback - This was the first walkback (called tour but no actual tour involved) of the weekend. The height of the first drop is much more impressive when standing next to it. We were allowed to go back the middle of the 1st hill after the first drop. Don told us more was planned, but the rain made it impossible for them to let us go back further due to safety reasons. We were allowed to stay for about an hour for photos and such. Was cool to see stuff that had fallen off the ride such as glasses, toys and a cedar point button. I was able to grab a old washer from the path to add to my scrapbook. Was one of the highlights of the weekend.

Shake, Rattle & Roll - Next it was off to the brother of the Triple Play. The ride was running great, just like the Triple Play. Fun view of Vortex while on the ride. Always love to see Huss Troika's in action.

SpongeBob SquarePants 3-D - Next was a stop, which was closed the day before. The ride was fun and told a interesting story for 5 minutes or so. I only wish the Hanna Barbera movie had been playing, as I love that at Universal as a kid.

Racer: Blue side - We hit the Racer: Blue next so I could make Diamondback my 50th coaster during ERT. The ride basically has the same front section as American Eagle, just a smaller scale. From there, it is a average coaster. The ride was rough and not racing. The ride does seem like it would have been more fun backwards.

Grand Carousel - What better to make a day complete at a theme park then a carousel. The ride was running fine and looked great. The park does need better ops as kids were already side-sattle before the ride started and nothing was said.

Next it was time for the presentations. We got there 15 minutes before the doors open and ended up front row center. We ended up next to people from the Coaster Zombies, who were great to sit by. The time was spent poking fun of the videos being shown on the screen before the presentations. The speakers were about 3 feet from us as the ice rink was already up. The first speaker was the guy (who's name is escaping me) in charge of operations (I think) and the water park. He did a good job talking and basicly killed time. Next up was a video from Tom Rebbie of PTC. He was scheduled to be there but sent out to China on business. The video can be seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahivof1VLrM . The final speaker was Jeff Gramke, one of the designers of the Beast. He spoke on the construction of the ride and fielded questions for about a half hour. You could tell the ride meant a lot to him and his passion was showing. it was nice to Jeff receive recognition for his hard work.

After the presentation, it was time for a break and then off to the Beast birthday party. When we entered, we were given a raffle ticket and one of the 8.99 souvenir drink cups. Was nice to see them give the cups out free and can be used the rest of the year as well. There was a special Beast cake, along with more cake, and snacks. The DJ was playing a bunch of music from 1979 (year Beast opened) which was a nice touch. The park also brought in a Little Bill and Scooby-Doo for the event as well, which the kids loved. The raffle was for some Diamondback stuff and some poster boards of before and after photos of the beast.

Avatar - One the way over to the Beast exit for the walk to Diamondback ERT, I hit Avatar. Which a fun ride, I'm not sure what the point of the middle hump is other then looks. No real airtime feeling, just seemed kind of there. Still a fun ride.

Diamondback - We hit the Beast exit as the line for the Beast closed. Following the fireworks, we waited for the word to go to Diamondback. The ride is simply amazing. The front is an airtime machine and the back is close behind. Even the middle was filled with airtime. Kings Island hit a home run with this ride. And the spalshdown was an outstanding idea. What better way to showcase the ride to people walking by. This ride is a must do for anyone who loves airtime. Event better if you can ride it at night. The park even sent free e-mails of the on-ride photos the whole night. We ended up with 4 rides in 40 minutes (most of that wait was for the front row) and headed home. My fiancee was drained and we left around 11:45. Part 3 coming soon.

Day 3

Day 3 was getting up at 6:15 to get ready and check-out. We got to the park at 6:40 and there was not much of a line. This day they were holding us at the metal detectors until it was time for ERT to start. ERT was Racer, Flight of Fear and Firehawk from 8-10. Firehawk was down the entire ERT, but I think Vortex replaced it as people were on it when we headed over to Diamondback passholder ERT at 9:30. There were absolutely no lines other then front row of Flight of Fear the whole time. Also on Flight of Fear, they turned the lights on for the first hour or so of ERT, which was nice of them. It was fun to see the fact they use the ride as storage for parts, but it makes seance.

Racer: Red side - This was the first ride of me for the day. The layout is the same as the blue side just a turn to the right. The ride was smoother then the blue side and not bad at all (what is it with blue sides being rougher then the red?) They were even racing the ride, which was a change from the day before.

My ride count for ERT was

Racer Red - 4
Racer Blue - 1
Flight of Fear - 5
Diamondback - 1

Racer walkback - Following our ride on Diamondback we waited around for Reptar to open for a front row seat ride. After that it was time for the Racer walkback. We walked on the Red side from top of the lift hill until the split. We were able to also see some of the horror props they have in storage. Also, we were able to see the station and footers of the former Flight Commander.

Delirium - it was off to Delirium while my fiancee took the coats to the car. I had my exspectations way too high for the ride. The ride looks like a tour de force while watching, but not as much while riding. Still, a fun exspeience and definatly eye catching.

Drop Zone - With no wait at Drop Zone, it was time to ride it. The ride up gives a great view of the park. Not a bad drop either. We also got a ride on Flight Deck after the ride re-opened with no wait.

Son of Beast walkback - This was our 3rd and final walkback of the weekend. The walkback started by Invertigo and went under Congo Falls. We also went behind the Timberwolf theater (very small stage) and the repair shop (which had one of the Flight of Fear cars torn apart out back.) We also got a great view of Flight Deck, which was a nice bonus. The structure of Son of Beast is amazing. The engineering to build the ride is a work of art. We were able to go down into the area were the loop was. The ride is impressive beyond words. Being able to watch the ride come towards where the loop was and standing on one of the footers was a special experience. After a while we took a group photo and it was back up the hill the same way we came (the drop down to the area we were in was around 40 feet.)

Eiffel Tower - My fiancee wanted to end the weekend with a trip in the tower. The observation deck provides a great view and feels safe. A perfect way to end the weekend.

We left around 4 and got home around 11 pm after a stop or 2. Some other thoughts on the park and weekend

- The souvenirs for the park are outstanding. Every major coaster has a shirt and a cup. All the merchandise is up to date as can be as well. Outside of the kids stuff, not to much generic crap. The prices were not bad either. A 30th anniversary beast shirt was around 17 bucks and the statix model was 25. They had postcards (a truly lost art for theme parks) and pressed pennies. I was very impressed.

- The drink selection was hit for miss, but the park had Barq's Red Cream soda! This simple fact I never see this is restaurants and found it here was amazing.

- The ride-ops were great the whole weekend. Everyone was full of energy, even during the ERT sessions. The park sound be proud of their workers.

- I love the kid cages the park has at rides. This is where you can leave your kid at a station while you ride. Not only is this great for the parent, but just looks funny as well. It's like the kid is serving time in a tiny jail cell. But all the kids seemed happy and no problems with them crying.

A big thank you to Don and the rest of the Kings island group. They had an outstanding event and I can only hope the event returns next year. if you get a chance, head out to Kings Island, it is a great park within a days drive.

The prices seemed to change a lot over the weekend. On Saturday they were 5 at open, full around noon, went back down, back up and back down again. It was nice though that if you got there early or late you could do any of them for $5. I would have never done Sling Shot at a price over 5 bucks.

I have one question for you. You said they were selling a lot of shirts for most of the rides. Did they have a shirt with just Invertigo on it??

For the Scooby-Doo ride, my shooter wasn't working either. I don't know what's with that ride. Are they just turned off (the laser for safety), or what's going on?? My opinions are from last year.

For Racer, the lapbars aren't that good on that ride. If you ride many other roller coasters that have PTC trains (I have ridden Screamin' Eagle, Viper, American Eagle, Blue Streak, Great American Scream Machine, and Wild One. Little Dipper, and Fairly Odd Parents are different types of PTC trains.), those are in my opinion much better. These lapbars are really pushed down into your body. You can't get much airtime on this ride because the lapbars are just old, and not good.

Avatar - What's the point of the hump? I rode it, and didn't get any airtime either, but maybe the point of it is that they could call it a roller coaster. Afterall, the real name of the ride is called Disko Coaster.

For Rue Le Dodge, I think those cars should be replaced. There are always cars broken in that arena, or some that go really slow. I still want them to go fast, but I think those need to be changed.

I enjoy Fairly Odd Coaster a lot better than the Little Dipper, but still think it's painted ugly.

Flight of Fear I was disappointed with because of the trim brake, and the fact that you don't know where you are going. It's fine in my opinion to not know where you are going when you have a ride like Space Mountain, and it's just normal turns, and drops, but Flight of Fear is abnormal turns, and inversions. I feel that Joker's Jinx is so much better at Six Flags America.

I think they did at the Thrill Seekers shop. It tended to be where I found stuff like Flight deck shirts. I really hope to hit the park again when I hit Sticker's Grove around July 4th and can check them.

Randomly, they were also out of Diamondback Statix models. There were some Friday but gone on Saturday. Sadly, they were set-up like a regular B & M hyper and not the v style seating.

We always comb the shops and yes, I saw an invertigo shirt. The Racer shirt I saw was alright too. I ended up getting the Diamondback "comic book" cover type shirt and the Beast 30th shirt.

As for the scooby doo light gun mine worked best when i held it sideways like a "gangster" or what have you.

The Racer was so fun when both sides were open. Those ops had it down pretty sharp to keep the trains together the whole ride.

Monsterfan, you noticed alot of the same stuff we did. We missed the racer and SOB walkbacks (SOB is the only coaster I've ever banned myself from riding). However we were on flight deck when you all were out there and looks like it was a better walkback then the Beast one we did Saturday. Yes, the Red Creme soda shocked me too. Drank like 4 of them. What I noticed is there was always one odd flavor at a stand that not many other stands would have. Yes, the ride ops were on their game. I feel bad for the FireHawk crew, they got the most unreliable ride in the park. We got one front row lap on it friday and that was it, always broke otherwise.

However I need to disagree with the negative review. I think its so much better than S:UF because you get to lay down going up lift instead of crushing your lungs. The SUF loop is uncomfortable compared to laying down on FireHawk too. And the dual station with NO LOOSE ARTICLE BINS makes the line move quicker. I love FireHawk and hope they just keep it around instead of giving up (see dejavu).

The train was a little dissapointing. Although now they have Diamondback going past it, you don't see much of anything else it just goes over by Picnic grove and the waterpark which wasn't open. I'll have to try it again though. The raft ride there was VERY impressive, and yeah the length of the que line seemed like a day long nature hike. Seemed like everyone had a quarter in the water cannons when we went through we got destroyed.

The Q and A turned into a complaint session again, just like most of the Q and A's i've been to at club events. Thats one thing that irritated me. I wanted to ask if Diamondback design started before CedarFair got the park or not. I also wanted to know some other things that you could only get answered at a time like that. Instead we get complaints that couldve been written on a little form and dropped at guest relations. Although I agreed the handstamps were ridiculous I went to hotel for a shower and nap saturday and my handstamp vanished. They NEED to waterproof them.

Can anyone tell me if Panda Express is still in the park? I saw a bunch of signs for them but couldn't find the actual resteraunt.

While its only in its 3rd year at KI, that rides been around since 2001 at Geauga Lake. I dont think they would rebuild it if they were going to get rid of it.

I ate there last time I was at KI, its inside of a big dining hall.

Avatar - What's the point of the hump? I rode it, and didn't get any airtime either, but maybe the point of it is that they could call it a roller coaster. Afterall, the real name of the ride is called Disko Coaster.

Its in the kids area, not really the point of it to have airtime. Gives the kids something "big" to ride.

For Rue Le Dodge, I think those cars should be replaced. There are always cars broken in that arena, or some that go really slow. I still want them to go fast, but I think those need to be changed.

Replacing the cars wouldnt help for long, the issue is lack of maintenence people and lack of replacing parts due to budget leads to running the parts until they die.

See, I felt Superman was much more comfortable coming out of the station and up the hill. I also felt the loops were about the same. It was the flying part that was just awful. It felt like the restrain was ready to break. I also loved the fact you could bring a full backpack on any ride minus Diamondback from what I saw. The lockers were not expensive, but still a nice deal.

The Q & A session was awful when the questions started with the park rep guy. You could tell he was getting annoyed with questions like "when will the Racer brake run get a new paint job?! It needs one and looks awful." or a winner like "so I was told that the platinum pass does not get the gold pass benefits, is that right? The pass system is confusing." You were dead on with leaving a not at guest relations.

Speaking of guest relations, the guy I talked to there was just clueless. We were trying to get a new program Sunday just for the scrapbook. If the could not give us one, no biggie. We were on the side inside the park mind you when this happened. We asked and the first thing he said "what is a ride warrior" which we showed him our badges and he just look dumbfounded. We explain it to him which he said "there are no programs, we are trying to do the green thing. You can find the info online" What the hell was this guy thinging. It is 4 pm on a Sunday, a guest ask for help and you tell them wrong info. Following that you tell them to look up the info online. After he said that, he just said next with no one behind us. This was not a young person either, he had to be in his 40's. Just simply amazing.

On the handstamp, you are right. I also did not like that on Friday it when on the wrist area. Was weird and not a fan.

I was with you on the Panda Express confusion. I was going to check the main food area where we were told, but 3 kids were having a food fight in front of the entrance.

I am glad to see you had a good time and enjoy red cream soda. Hard to find people that even know what it is let alone like it.
