^ You need those people in the back smoking cigars and watching the cam feeds. (Image taken from the movie 21) BUT Six flags better not get sued for this. There have been outrageous cases these days.. and this better not be one of them with the family winning. I feelow sorrow for the family, but that kid shouldve known....
What was he thinking trying to get some stupid hat is that restricted area. Must have been one expensive if it caused him his death. Why didnt his friend warn him not to go in there, I didn't see that in the article. I don't care anymore, you get what you get and that is what that idiot got.
What is really annoying is when they say that they had to close the ride so that officials could "inspect" it. The damn ride is fine, its the ignorant people who fail to read. If you come back at the end of the night and tell the ride ops that you lost an object on the ride, they'll have maintenance come and get it. I have never had a problem with retrieving fallen object of mine after riding a roller coaster. You don't really even need a "keep out" sign to know that its unsafe to enter a ride area. Its more like common sense.
I don't feel sympathy for this kid either. Restricted is restricted. Why would you hop two fences just to go over by the ride. You just rode the ride, didn't he notice how fast he was going on it? There's reasons those fences are up, and why we can't just walk through the area. Also, the kid could have gone to guest relations and filled out the stuff to see if the hat was found later. Sure, there were probably other hats lost that day, and there's no guarantee with that, but I doubt his hat was anything too special. I heard about this yesterday, and when i saw the story in the paper this morning, I just felt nothing for the kid, or even the family. It was just pure stupidity on his part, and it sucks to see that Six Flags Inc. will get sued for this, and have to pay for someone's stupidity.

omg I know, and last time I checked, hats are only like 20-30 bucks... Maybe more for one of those Yankees hats with jewels on them, but, most people dont have that.
This kid is a moron. Sorry he's dead, but he is an idiot.
To answer the question I believe that 6 ft is the regulated height for ride fences in IL not sure about Georgia (Since they were 6 ft i would assume that its the same but idk).
I read from one article that the operator feels very responsible for what happened, and that is unfortunate because there was nothing he could have possibly done about it. The kid (and this may sound harsh) got what he deserved based on his actions. I could easily see the park getting sued on the technicality that the signs weren't visible enough or some other minor detail that shouldn't matter. Bottom line to me is that when there is a fence its not usually there for looks, it has a purpose and to jump that fence is downright dumb.
Remember, there's nothing but air beneath the chair.
i mean if youve been by batman when it is running you know how loud it is. dont you think he would have heard it? and gotten out of the way or dove to the ground or something
and i read something else that he wasn't getting his hat, he was taking a shortcut back to his group after lunch.....
maybe it was suicide??? i doubt it though because that would be a hell of a way to do it
but then again maybe it was because if he had any common sense he would have known that he would have gotten ejected and maybe even arrested if he was seen in the area or jumping the fences

They were inspecting it for any damage that may have occurred to the ride.
Wow...does the media suck. If you watch the 45 second video on this site, the headline reads "Deadly Ride" and they mention the Kentucky Kingdom accident. The headline should say something like Accident at Park, but they go with "Deadly Ride"
Deadly ride??!?!!?
What?!?!?!
That's not SF's fault, the news makes it sound like it was.
I feel a lawsuit coming...
"I've been told that some part of every wish will be heard but lately I lost sight of the truth in those words."
Anyways, I agree with what has been said so far. However, I would like to also add that that i feel sorry for a) the riders... especially front row. and b) the standbyers.
If you had to witness something like this, I know it would scar me for life.
Coasters Ridden: 131 Top 5: Maverick, El Toro, Voyage, Fahrenheit, Dominator
So are we to assume that the parents would have sued if he got caught and kicked out for trespassing in a restricted zone. Saying that it wasnt his fault that the path into the park was thru this area.
It was not a path into the park, it was a restricted area with fences. They could have simply walked to the entrance instead of being lazy and taking a "shortcut."
Looking at this picture it looks like there is only one fence surrounding the ride. It'd be easy to hop the fence anywhere along this parking lot and get under the ride. The enterance is actually a long way away from this lot, and it looks like they run a tram to get people to the enterance.
