Big Thunder Mountain Derails

Talk about anything that has to do with the amusement park industry here.
Postby Aero737 on September 5th, 2003, 3:18 pm
http://www.nbc4.tv/news/2459380/detail.htmlWow, this is big. Big Tunder Mountain Railroad derailed in Disneyland. Apparently 1 person is dead and 10 are injured. The media is turning this into a cicruis and it is on all the news channels. I have the families of the injured in my thoughts.

I was under the impression that death is impossible at Disney properties. Maybe thats only if the media doesn't get there first.

Yes how do you get that Disneyland sucks. If it were not for Walt Disney AND Disneyland you may not have a Six Flags Great America at all. He dared to build such and experiment, and EVERY THEME PARK IN THE WORLD built since 1955 (which is like every one of them) has something that Disneylad had first. You can look at SFGAm and other parks to see resemblences. Here's a few:Scenic Railroad: Why on earth put a railroad in a park? Walt loved trains, so that was the reason for the train at DL. GAm has one because it worked at DL. A transport device and a fun leisurley ride. How many other parks have a train ride? The majority of the parks in the US do. Why? Because it worked at Disney.Themed areaas: Both parks have different themed areas.Attractions for all kinds of people: Thrill rides, not so thrilling rides, shows, characters, etc.. Designed to be an immersive experience.Dont dare tell me that Disneyland sucks. You didnt provide any material to back you comment up. And don't try to tell me that CP gives you a better immersive experience, because it doesn't. But even CP has Disney element. Themed rides, a railroad, shows, small rides for kids and thrill rides for the big kids.Disneyland is the experiment that every modern theme park is built on. You should be extremely glad it was built.(greatamerica2003 gets off his soapbox)

Disney parks may be ok, but Disney (the company) sucks. And not because they make crappy movies or cartoons, but because the copyrights on them will never ever run out.

Disney make horrible cartoons? Lately, but not in the past...aladdin was one of the best of all time, lion king.... beauty and the beast...all the old classics, plus the pixar films.THe new ones they come out every year are addmittedly lame lately, however their computer animated films are amazing.

Basically Disneyland is all entertainment. They dont really have that many thrilling rides. Its pretty boring to me. If anoyone has been there they will know that the "Its a Small World After All" song drives people nuts. They play it over and over again. greatamerica2003- if you like it thats great. Its good that everyone is different. Yeah Disney has come up with some interesting things but the park still doesnt appeal to me.

Then don't say that it "SUCKS" Anybody can say that without putting any thought into it. Thanks you for rephrasing that. "Does not appeal to me" sounds much better.Did you know that Disney will probably end up being the highest grossing studio this year? Pirates of the Caribbean is in second place and Finding Nemo is in first for box office totals. Pirates actually jumped UP from the 4th place spot to the 3rd.They must be doing something right.

I will agree with you that the Disney parks dont suck. In fact, I enjoyed both of them when I was a kid. But....... I have a difference of opinion in a few of your statements.Walt with the railroad? He was hardly the first to do this. Heck, Kiddieland right in the Chicago area has had a railroad since it opened in 1929.Themed areas? Holiday World claims this title although I dont know if thats a fact. HW was built before Disneyland so it is possible.Attractions for all kinds of people? Plenty of parks before Disney have been providing kiddie and thrill rides long before Walt came into the picture. But I will say that the debut of Six Flags was based on Walt Disney's legacy. The idea was to build parks closer to home. Thus the opening of Six Flags over Texas.

What I meant were in terms of the large theme and amusement parks. Not the smaller parks that grew out of carnivals (not to say that Kiddieland was one, but you get the point) I should have rephrased that better. You caught me on that Chitown.

On a large scale park, yeah, you are probably right.Disney definitely defined alot of the qualities of today's parks. No doubt about that.
