Halloween in Orlando + Starliner POV!

Talk about anything that has to do with the amusement park industry here.
Postby robbalvey on November 7th, 2007, 2:20 am
Hey everyone!

If you have followed Theme Park Review over the past few years you'll
know that each year we take a trip to Orlando to check out many of the
Halloween and other seasonal events.

This year we visited Halloween Horror Nights, Mickey's Not-So-Scary
Halloween Party, Epcot's Food & Wine Festival, checked out Cypress
Gardens' Starliner, Busch Gardens' Floorless SheiKra, and LOTS more!

We produced TWO videos. The first is an interview with Universal Creative Director Michael Roddy where first he walks us through the "Nightmare on Elm Street" maze and then chats to us about scares, shaker cans, and more! You can download this video here (those of you into Haunt stuff should really like this video!):
http://www.themeparkreview.com/videos/hhn_2007.zip

And for you coaster POV fans, we were able to produce a new "Roller Coasters in the RAW" video of Cypress Gardens new Starliner. Download that video here:
http://www.themeparkreview.com/videos/starliner_pov.zip

Now onto some photos!

Image
Halloween Horror Nights 17 at Universal Orlando. While it wasn't quite as good as previous years, I still think Universal does Halloween better than ANY other theme park company!

Image
The TPR gang got to hang out with Universal Creative Director Michael Roddy as he toured us through some mazes and chatted to us about scary stuff!

Image
Nightmare on Elm Street - Dreamwalkers. If you're fans of the movie, you'll find a lot of familiar scenes in here.

Image
Jack's scare zone reminded me of something out of an Oingo Boingo concert.

Image
To find the TPR group, look for the grown men with a fairy pink wand!

Image
Bill & Ted show is probably the most rockin' awesome Halloween party show there is. Although it you're not into music shows, it may not be for you.

Image
The full sized Ferris Wheel at the end of the park was a nice touch.

Image
Psychoscarepy was my favorite maze. Lots of hot chicks. Santa with chainsaws, and overall some REALLY kick ass sets!

Image
After visiting DisneySea just a few weeks ago, you forget how awesome IOA looks. While it's not as nice as DisneySea, I still think it's the best looking park in the US.

Image
Hulk was running exceptionally well. Last time we were at IOA it kind of rattled and felt like it needed a rehab. This time is REALLY kicked ass!

Image
It was time to get the One Fish, Two Fish virgins wet! We need Dan here! =)

Image
I miss you Tatsu....

Image
Can someone say "New Entrance to Harry Potter Land" maybe? ;)

Image
I don't care what they do to this area as long as I can still get BEER!!!

Image
On our way to Sea World we made a stop at Waffle House.

Image
I get my hash browns Smothered, Covered, Chunked, Peppered, and Topped!

Image
New credit for all of us....

Image
...with an AMAZING view! =)

Image
GRRR!! I'm Kraken. I'm not a sock puppet. I'm a real EVIL monster!!!

Image
Kraken was pretty awesome!

Image
Why must we always molest inanimate objects?

Image
This is a REALLY bad idea!

Image
I can't tell if that's a look of terror or a look of "special olympics" on Jow's face!

Image
WANDLESS SPACESHIP EARTH!!! "I just came!"

Image
This is what Gary says to Wes in the bedroom! :)

Image.
HA HA! Figment performed an illegal operation and will be shut down!

Image
You can never have enough Beverly.

Image
"I think I just drank my own piss"

Image
Mixing it with the veggie drink makes it WORSE!!!

Image
The two stages of Beverly include the initial "shock."

Image
And then the after taste! You'll be burping up this look for the next 20 minutes!

Image
Our day at Epcot was all about the Food and Wine (beer) festival!

Image
Everyone loves getting head....cabbage.

Image
Big beers for us big Americans!

Image
Hey everyone! Cute photo! (Of Kidtums, NOT Robb!)

Image
Next up was Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party!

Image
Magic Kingdom was decked out with lots of Halloween stuff.

Image
Hey look! Magic Kingdom's castle is doing it's Disneyland impression! =)

Image
The shirt says it all! =)

Image
The TPR group does a Haunted Mansion take over!!!

Image
I've always wanted to know what she's got on underneath that dress...

Image
I see the free candy, but where's the beer?"

Image
Space Mountain - 10 minute wait...which was really a walk-on...I love this event!!!

Image
Once again!

Image
Another TPR take over!!! How many people can you get in one Splash Mountain boat? :)

Image
Headless Horseman kicks ass!

Image
Boo To You parade with the Haunted Mansion grave digger drill team!

Image
The candy "Stash" from our evening! =)

Image
We made a run over to Busch Gardens Tamps for some floorless SheiKra

Image
It's pretty much the same, which is cool because this coaster is awesome!

Image
Kumba is still my favorite of all B&M's!

Image
OMG!!! Construction update!!!

Image
We headed over to Cypress Gardens to check out Starliner.

Image
This was a pretty "average" coaster at Miracle Strip and it's pretty much and "average" coaster here too. Fun, sure, but I doubt this will "save the park" from all the trouble it's had. In fact, the park was just purchased by some "real estate processors....so I wonder what that will mean for the future of the place."

Image
Fun ride...just don't go in expecting anything amazing.

Image
"Ok, keep going back....take another step back...one more step...keep going... OK!!! EVIL SIGN!! EAT THEM!! EAT THEM NOW!!!!!"

Image
TPR Take over on the Triple Hurricane!

Image
Reverchon mouse disguised as a Zamperla!

Image
The "TPR House" has become a tradition for our Florida trip.

Image
Robb is on the grill!

Image
And everyone else is getting quite drunk!

Image
It's true! It's totally 100% true!

Image
Animal Kingdom! We'll be out of here in 20 minutes!

Image
Whee! The only fun part of the only half-way decent ride in the park!

Image
A whole lot of nothing.

Image
We all just want to say hello to the Imagineer that that thought it will be cool to have a whole land worth of "Scream" Themeing!

Image
You just never get tired of "Good Tower."

Image
I got a box of tissues with your name written ALL over them! =)

Image
So that's it for this "short version" of our Halloween in Orlando trip report. If you'd like to see the full version, click here:
http://www.themeparkreview.com/orlando2007/index.htm

And be sure to download the two videos. I think those of you who are really into "Haunt Stuff" will really find the interview with Universal's Creative director very interesting.

A furious storm once roared `cross the sea, catching ships in its path, helpless to flee. Instead of a certain and watery doom, the winds swept them here to Typhoon Lagoon!

Funny this mentions Oingo Boingo. I'm listening to them right now.

Egad I miss going to Orlando! I used to go there almost every year from 1995 to 2001. It was almost like my home away from home. After 2001 we just stopped going.

I'm sure Epcot's changed up a bit since I last went there. And you were right, I was never thrilled with World of Coke. I didn't know they still had it. Spaceship Earth is finally getting a much-needed makeover and I hope the finale is decent. Wonders of Life just isn't much anymore now that Cranium Command is on YouTube. I never went on Mission: Space. Test Track still lacks the old World of Motion. World Showcase hasn't changed a bit besides new films.

I hope I get to ride Space Mountain before it ever gets a makeover. I believe that ride should stay the way it is.

I never seen MK when it was Not-So-Scary Halloween Party.

I'm glad AK got a better reputation when Everest hit the park. The park has always lacked in decent attractions besides Countdown To Extinction, It's Tough To Be A Bug, and Kilamanjaro Safaris.

I never got to check out Cypress Gardens and Busch Gardens Tampa. But I heard Python got bulldozed to the ground. The park must have a better reputation now that that ride is gone. I love wooden coasters and the bunnyhops are the exciting park. We can't expect corkscrews and loops on every coaster, can we? :)

And one more thing: That Mad Mouse disquised as a Reverchon looks like our very own Ragin' Cajun! :D
R.I.P. Splashwater Falls and Space Shuttle America. Deja Vu, enjoy Idaho.

/\ Wonders of Life is to be on the board for demolition within the next year, that is the current rumor out there, much better than using it for convention space. Better there be nothing there.

Space Mountain has gotten really rough lately and it doesn't seem very dark inside the mountain anymore.

Mexico got a new ride, Canada got a new film, America got a new film, Italy is getting a new restaurant, Japan just got a new restaurant and work is being done to the Mexico restaurants.

World of Coke is now the Cool Zone, but overall, yes it has changed a lot since you remember.

I didn't know Japan is getting a new restaurant. And Mexico. And yes, I'm aware they have a new ride.

I just haven't been there since 2001 so I can't tell much. I'd like to see the Nemo attraction. It's probably gotten the attention it needed since The Living Seas was dated.

I'll miss Wonders Of Life.

Tokyo Dinning is the revamped restaurant and the two at Mexico are to be revamped soon with added seating to the outdoor one and a tequila bar to the inside one.

It wasn't too bad. Putting 3-in-a-row is totally "legal" on the ride, but you NEED to plan it out. Make sure you mix bigger people with smaller people, etc, etc.

Glad you guys liked the TR!
