April 19, 2007 - The plan to construct the 150-story Chicago Spire along the lakefront was passed unanimously Thursday by the Chicago Planning Commission. The Spire would be the tallest residential building in the world.
The Chicago Planning Commission considered the proposal for the Chicago Spire, a 2,000-foot tower at the mouth of the Chicago River that would be the tallest building in the country with the intent of holding 1,200 expensive condominiums.

Looks like a great addition to the already great Chicago Skyline.

They should put all the homeless in there.....

I heard about this, and saw some pictures of the proposed 2000 foot tower. This new tower design doesn't like as cool, but still looks awesome. Hopefully it wont take them 10 years to build like it does for the highways to be redone.

^LOL That's the joke going around my studio about this building. Calatrava is one hell of an architect and I'm happy to hear that after going through several revisions (i forget, but something like 4-6 different versions), he finally got his design approved. I also like seeing that he is proposing a bridge project next to the spire which looks a lot like his Milwaukee Art Museum wing. That art wing looks incredible along the lake front. You'll see when it's finished, the curviture of the steel creates this sort of "bird flying towards the water" effect which, to me, looks pretty sweet!!

The building itself is quite controversial so it'll be interesting to see this thing get built! I bet Trump is pissed cause from some angles, this building will completely cover his tower from the lakeshore skyline.

As a final thought from the architecture major, I think we are looking at the revitalizing of Chicago as the greatest architectural city in the world! I thought for sure we were losing this title with all the developing overseas and the lack of anything creative being currently constructed, but if the olympics go through and this Calatrava tower gets built, we just might gain that title back!

I call it the world's largest drill-bit.

Actually I liked the first design better, This one looks like someone took a huge Zeppelin, twisted it, then stuck it in the ground. But definitely a cool looking building.

I just went to the site today and took pictures. At the moment it's just a dirt patch/parking lot, but it'll be a great addition to that area and they are saying it should break ground as early as June 2007! And that bridge desperately needs a walk way, so that will be a great addition as well.

I really did like their first choice better.
Then they came out with the flat one.

They should put a light at the top, and have it lit on the City's birthday.

from what i heard, some of the condominums will be reserved for the people who will be in the olympics. And it was suppose to be a hotel but they changed the design and just made it to a condominum building. They say the the price range is going to be from $2,000.00-$20,000,000.00. They will be hotel suites condominum and the Skyline condominum will go up for 20,000,000.00.

EDIT: some of the condominums will be reserved for the people who will be in the olympics IF chicago gets picked.
