Top 10 Greatest Rides You Been On

Talk about anything that has to do with the amusement park industry here.
Postby Danhockey04 on January 15th, 2007, 8:54 pm
Its something to do during the offseason.....

10 greatest rides I have ever been on by ride experience and theming

This is my opinion and you can comment or add your own list and why you chose them.
(No Spoilers in descriptions)

10. Space Mountain (MK) - This is an obvious classic and really gets some nice tight and quick turns in the ride. The darkness makes the ride as well as the stars on the ceiling adds to the unique feeling of the ride. It’s always a great ride every time you ride it.

9. Test Track (EPCOT) - This is one of my favorite rides at Disney and it has really good theming. The ride itself has many different elements that are themed each in their own particular way. The ride is very unique and thrilling every time I ride it.

8. Batman: The Ride (SFGAm) - This is one of the most popular rides at SFGAm still and has probably the best theming to any coaster there. It is one of those rides that I will ride if everything at SFGAm has a long line, I will be willing to wait through a long line for it. It is one a few rides that still makes me see “stars” every time I ride it.

7. Revenge of the Mummy (USF) - This is probably one of the best themed roller coasters in the world. The ride itself has a good layout and can get some good forces, but the theming is defiantly what makes the ride so good.

6. Men In Black: The Ride (USF) - That ride is the greatest interactive dark ride I have been on. The guns are accurate and can be identified which laser dot is yours easily. Also, the targets and not hard to identify and there are a lot of hidden targets, more than the other dark rides I have been on. It is also themed very well and has the best story plot to an interactive dark ride yet.

5. Splash Mountain (MK) - This log flume has great scenery and a theme that I never understood until not long ago. The only reason it isn’t lower is because I never knew who Br’er Rabbit is and how he came about, and knowing the theme helps you understand the way the ride is designed.

4. The Voyage (HW) - This coaster is head and shoulders better than anything I have ever ridden before. It mixes in elements and speed very well and packs in a nice punch of air-time. This is a must ride for anyone that enjoys coasters. The ride

3. Twilight Zone: Tower of Terror 4 (MGM Studios) - I am sure this is almost everyone’s favorite drop ride if you have been on it. The theming and story behind it is amazing, and the cycle they used gave so much air-time it was amazing.

2. “Dudley Dooright” log flume (IoA) - This ride has just amazing theming and a great layout. Also you actually get some good air-time on this ride, which was surprising to me.

1. Soarin’ Over California (EPCOT) - This ride is just magnificent. It just feels like you are really in the certain situations they put you in and it is a great ride that can be enjoyed by both young and old. Every time I rode it, people were in awe during and after the ride, it is just an amazing ride.

well, I cant really rank exactly, but I could probably come up with the 10 best rides I've done based on themed expierience

EuroMir@Europa Park, unique ride/coaster system, awesome themeing and I absolutely love the Soundtrack

Valhalla@Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Well it was said no spoilers but it's a flume with themeing and effects that will blow your mind.

Droomvlucht (Dream Flight) @ Efteling in the Netherlands, hands down the greatest dark ride I have ever ridden, minor spoiler but it's themed around dutch fairy tales, and it kicks butt

Spiderman @ IOA, incredible themeing cool effects and very immersive, moreso than most sims.

The Hex @ Alton Towers it's a Vekoma Haunted Swing but the storyline, theme and effects are incredible.

Revenge of the Mummy @USO I really like the theming and the ride isnt half bad either.

I dont know the name of this one, but it's a train ride at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and you go though a cave, it's pretty lame, awful in fact but I'm pretty sure it's themed to an acid trip, and while bad it's memorable and with friends it's hilarious, what more can you ask for.

Raven @ Holiday World The outside of the station is kinda sorta themed, but the ride kicks ass.

Expedetion GeForce @ Holiday Park, same deal as Raven, but ExGe has a whole section of the park themed for it.

Mr Toads Wild Ride @ Disneyland, it's the best way for disney to make you go to hell.

Alice in Wonderland at Blackpool Pleasue Beach, very psycadellic. :)

there are lots more, but I've been on so much stuff, not everything comes to mind right away, there's probably stuff I like more than some of these, but I think it's pretty solid.(if there are more than 10 listed I've probably edited it) :)
Favorite Wood Coasters: The Voyage, Ravine Flyer II, Thunderhead, Balder
Favorite Steel: Voltron Nevera, Steel Vengeance, Expedition GeForce, Olympia Looping

10. Jurassic Park: The Ride (USH)- The movies are awesome and the animatronic figures in this ride are amazing. Scariest water ride ever.

9. Space Mountain (Disneyland Park)- Although smaller than it's Florida counterpart, still much better. Mostly great for the reasons mentioned above. This one is better, though, because you don't sit "Whizzer style" and the track is just more exciting.

8. Haunted Mansion Holiday (Disneyland Park)- This rocks. Nightmare Before Christmas and the Haunted Mansion. Very little could top this (about seven things to be exact). They really go all out for the holiday layover. Some even argue it's better than the original.

7. Pirates of the Carribean (Disneyland Park)- Get's the thrills and the show. Two fun drops in the begining and an amazing animatronic show throughout the rest. And the new movies stuff added in just make it even cooler.

6. Soarin' Over California (Disney's California Adventure)- Thanks to the fastpass, I never miss this ride when I go to DCA. It's truely an incredible ride that stimulates many senses, including smell. Plus, it flies over my home state. What could be better?

5. Splash Mountain (MK)- Better than it's California counterpart. It's a very fun ride. Several drops and great animatronics add to the excitment along with a great musical score. It's a "must ride" everytime at Disney, regardless of weather.

4. X (SFMM)- Who needs theming? The innovative design is what does it. The whole ride is brilliant. I really feel like I'm about to die on this ride. I love it. And I don't know what people are talking about when they say it hurts. They're crazy.

3. Twilight Zone: Tower of Terror (MGM-Disney)- This ride scares the crap out of me every single time. The emersive story and foreboding music really do the trick. It really hypes you up for the inevitable drop. And yes, I admit, it is better than the California version.

2. Indianna Jones Adventure (Disneyland Park)- Freakin' awesome. What more can be said? The effects are amazing, the ride is fun, and it's pretty much non-stop action til the very end.

1. The Haunted Mansion (Disneyland Park)- A classic, great music and atmosphere, and amazing special effects that'll keep people dazzled for ages. Even though some of the ride appears dated by todays standards, it remains my very favorite to this day.
Every jumbled pile of person has a thinking part that wonders what the part that isn't thinking, isn't thinking of.

10. Shrek 4-D USF- As far as the actual 4-D effects, they were average I thought, but I did love the finale. This is on here for the pre-show "More flogging!" I thought the room was incredibly themed, (by about my third time on it I ignored the show and was examing the details of the torture chamber) The basic plot of the attraction was also very well conceived, and managed to tell a short story taking place between the first and second movies.

9. Medusa SFMW- I fully admit to being Biased to floorless rollercoasters, explaining why two of the less popular floorless coasters in the country made my list. The station to this ride was about as good as a six flags roller coaster station gets, allowing guests to enter a temple of the gorgon medusa. When the station of a roller coaster makes you think "Why can't SFGAM's rides be themed this well?" Your know it's well done.

8. Viper SFGAm- Yeah...I'm biased towards this particular attraction as well based on the fact that by sheer coaster experiance it's my second favorite attraction.

7. Batman: the Ride SFGAM- This ride begins with what I beleive to be the standerd of Roller coasters queue lines. Entering a park with references to Bruce Wayne, as well of course as Bolliger and Mabillard and Jim Wintrode. Followed by entering the remnants of a collapsed highway bridge in some kind of underground area, and finally entering the broad avenue storm drain. And then the batcave. The ride itself is not only the first of it's kind, both by type of coaster as well as the many other batman clones out there, but it is such because it is an exceptional coaster. Packing Five spectacular inverstions into 52 seconds is no easy task. But Batman does it famously.

6. Scooby Doo's Ghostblasters- SFFT: Noted not the sfstl version Which I haven't ridden. This one differs from stl's in that is is a tracked version. I really love the idea of this type of interactive dark ride. The inside of the queue house is themed to a haunted house of types with profiles of each of the five main characters of scooby doo. Many effects during the ride really create an immersive experiance as well.

5. Superman: Krypton Coaster- SFFT: Once again, I'm biased toward Floorless coaters. This one gets the number five spot for one reason only. The Zero-G roll is absolutly the best element I've ever experianced on a roller coaster. This unique floorless coaster also gets the advantage of playing off the quarry wall which makes SFFT unique.

4. Dueling Dragons ICE- IOA: Okay, I know a lot of people prefer Fire...But I liked Ice better. As far as the queue goes it is the most immersive waiting experiance I've ever had. Make it a bit darker and they could use it for their annual HHN event. Haha. But seriously I absolutly loved every aspect of this attraction.

3. Men In Black: Alien Attack- USF: Once again the immersive interactive dark ride qualities I described on scooby doo apply here. The queue was once again very immersive, allowing guests to explore MiB headquarters, before being drafted and put on the streets facing the dangers of their daily work. The end has several different outcomes, and features of course the big points boost if you can hear the dialogue. (Which I didn't the first two times around so listen closely when you know the end is nearing)

2. Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls- IOA: Not only second on my list, but also the Best water ride I've ever experanced. The layout was amazing, the plot easy to follow, and the moment in the dark room is probably the most suspense I've ever felt on a ride.

1. The Adventures of Spider-Man- IOA: Absolutly the best ride I've ever experianced hands down. The attraction begins when we enter the lobby of the Daily Bugle, and make our way through the offices of it's employees, baring unmistakable signs of struggle. The Level of detail makes you feel like you've been plunged into a comic book, the use of color in the queue I found to be a big factor in that. The actual attraction features amazing 3 and 4 D effects, with huge set pieces live fire, and so much more. The ride vehicles themselves, and there are several moments that truly make you feel as though you are there. The upwards moment for example. Also I loved the finale of this ride "Not an Exit!" In my three days at IOA I beleive I rode this ride 28 times. More then I rode many of the attractions at my home park in the last two years. Spider-Man is not to be passed up, In-fact make a base camp there, because this is a ride you'll want to ride over and over again...Don't forget to clear some time for Dudley Do-Right, Jurassic Park River Adventure and Dueling Dragons!

Here's a long one...

10: Medusa @ SFGAdv
Probably the smoothest ride I have ever ridden and first mega-looper i have ridden since the removal of Shockwave. Riding its cousin...

9: Great American Scream Machine @ SFGAdv
...brought back several memories of Shockwave, right down to the roughness. The only downside to it besides it being rough as hell, every time the train hits the brakes there's a nasty screech that sounds like a f*cking elephant just screamed in your ear.

8: Chang @ SFKK
Think of Iron Wolf on crack and you get Chang. The new paint job looked real nice and almost as smooth as Medusa. Flying over the shop was a nice effect.

7: Iron Wolf @ SFGAm
The only reason I like Wolf better than Chang is because it's more compact and I like rides that are kinda squeezed into their area. The trees add to the effect.

6: Shockwave @ SFGAm
Who f*cking cares if its gone forever. I still loved this ride. I loved seeing it towering over me when I entered the parking lot. I loved standing in line and watching the train fly over me in the loop. And I loved that first drop more than anything. I believe that one curved drop is what got me hooked on roller coasters.

5: Whizzer @ SFGAm
Flying through the trees and getting the feeling you're gonna fall out of your seat and into the water is one of the best experiences I go through every time I ride it. This ride has a special place inside of me because it was my first roller coaster.

4: Twilight Zone Tower of Terror @ WDW - MGM Studios
By far the best flat ride I have ever ridden. The theming is incredible, the storyline is awesome, and the airtime in the elevator shaft is the best feeling i have ever felt.

3: El Toro @ SFGAdv
For years I loved American Eagle over all other wooden coasters but the minute I saw this thing I knew this would become my favorite wooden roller coaster, and it did. The airtime on this monster in the back seat combines Demon's first drop in the back seat with Raging Bull's first drop in the back seat, and the hills on AE in the back seat. RIDE IT!

2: Demon @ SFGAm
Ok, everyone asks me why Demon is my favorite ride at SFGAm. For me, a GREAT ride has to have some of the following:
-Good theming
-Good storyline
-Tunnels
-Airtime
-at least 2 inversions
-a long history (in this case, TotC converts Demon and then it losing and regaining its theming over the years)
-water
-fly over walkways.
For Demon, it does all of the above.

1: Greezed Lightnin' @ SFKK
My all-time favorite coaster. Mainly because it used to be at Great America, but also because that loop had some odd feeling that it combined being lifted out of my seat while at the same time being pushed back down. Can't really describe it in words so you'll have to ride it to see what I mean.

Honorable Mention:
American Eagle - Really fun ride but has gotten extremely rough in recent years.
DejaVu - Great ride, but killed Sky Whirl and has alot of problems running.
Thunder Run - Was a fun ride in the front row but after riding it in the back row my back was killing me.
Batman the Ride - Compact with good theming but that yellow paint makes it look like a steel banana with blue supports.
Twisted Twins - I loved the dueling concept but was really rough.

Least Favorites:
-T2 because it wasn't the worst ride at SFKK, but the worst thing... ever. I hated this more than smashing my finger when I was 4. Terrible paint job, rougher than Shockwave, Wolf, and Demon combined, and the entrance was a pain in the ass to find. Can't forget the sign falling apart, complete lack of scenery (gravel, what great scenery.) broken queue rails and most of the garbage cans surrounding the ride were knocked over when I was there. Can't wait for this to meet the melter.

-Superman because the only fun part of it is the pretzel. The ride looks terrible with fading paint and a piss-poor attempt at scenery. And what little scenery the ride has is either infested with yellow jackets, falling apart, or has had gum thrown at it (the SuperGirl thing especially).

10. Whizzer at SFGAm
This ride is about one thing...fun. Going through the trees, hugging the ground, and everything in between. It's not without it's charm, if it were anywhere else, it would be painfully average

9. Batman the Ride at SFGAm
To date I've been on 5 Batmans (STL, GADv, OT, and SFNO being the others), and while each are good, this one is the most themed, and going through the trees is about as awesome as it gets.

8. Magnum XL 200 at Cedar Point
From viewing Lake Erie to scremaing down the 200 foot drop in a matter of seconds, this ride definately gives a thrill few others can match even today.

7. Giant Drop and King Chaos at SFGAm
Okay, there's two here, but each is very intense and gives a wonderful view of a wonderful park.

6. Iron Wolf at SFGAm
This is the most intense stand-up out there, it's compact and rough and provides hella G's unlike the bigger stand-ups. The trees give it the edge over Georgia Scorcher.

5. Hades at Mt. Olympus
This would be an awesome Wooden coaster on a parking lot, but because MtO put the effort into making it very well themed, it is definately among the best in the industry.

4. Demon at SFGAm
The walk-through scenery, the tunnels, the fly-overs, the air and inversions. This is definately a coaster with passion, and row 6A is the best place to get it. It goes from 7 to 4 because I don't have to wait for it usually.

3. Mr. Freeze (SFOT, not SFStl)
The texas version has more interaction with the rides around it than does SFStl, and therefore increases the the intensity of it. THe ride gives you an adrenaline rush only topped by Strata Coasters...and speaking of which...

2. Kingda Ka at SFGADv
When it's open, it starts out flying by the trees going so fast you can barely breathe, then followed by a vertical ascent and decent of 400+feet. Simply amazing.

1. Splashwater Falls
This ride is all about the people around you. It gives a tad bit of air, and soaks you to the extreme. THe fun part is witnessing everyone else get soaked, then going on the bridge and get soaked again. It's the best water ride I know, and even though I don't like water rides, it is still the best ride experience I know. Especially at night.

#10. Spinball Whizzer(Alton Towers)- This is only coaster of it's kind that I have been on, and I really really enjoyed it. Looking down on that 90 was one of the weirdest sensations ever.

#9. Avalanche(Timber Falls)- This may be #9 on this list, but it holds a top spot for myAc Woodies. This thing looks so tame, but it packs such a punch in ANY seat. Plus $12 for unlimited rides? Won me over.

#8. Boss(Six Flags St. Louis)- Now despite all of the "rough" reviews this coaster is known for, (no pun intended) it has a VERY creative and impressive layout. It keeps its speed the whole ride, and it's just extremely impressive to the eye.

#7. Exaclibur(Six Flags St. Louis)- This is one of the most fun flats I've ever been on in my life. The G's are great, and the sensation from watching the ride itself is amazing. Though the half capacity thing isn't so attractive.

#6. Scooby Doo's GhostBlasters(Six Flags St. Louis)- I think the main reason I like this so much over other dark rides, is the boat aspect. It just seems so cool to me, and in the summer, it's a nice cold ride while pwning nubz.

#5. Raging Bull(Six Flags Great America)- My first coaster over 200ft. I remember the first time I rode this, I was so terrified. But the minute after we started going down the drop, I had a blast.

#4. Top Thrill Dragster(Cedar Point)- I rode this after two years of waiting, and it was nothing short of my expectations. It was just amazing. It's just so intimidating. The size alone made you want to ride it.

#3. Millenium Force(Cedar Point)- When I went to Cedar Point last year, I had a small obsession with this ride. Me and my mom have always had an obesession with it. We'd watch it on Discovery Channel, and wanna ride it SO BAD.

#2. Deja Vu(Six Flags Great America)- *runs* I love this Vekoma piece of sh*t so much. Why? I have no clue. Maybe it's the fact that I love having a higher chance of getting an Exit Pass when its cold?

#1. Voyage(Holiday World)- From the day it was announced, until the day I rode it, I was so impressed with what was being constructed. Reviews do not do justice to how amazing the ride is. Not even a POV will provide a rational overview of the ride. It's just such a perfectly balanced ride of all elements. The triple down, is the most amazing element, I have ever experienced next to an Inside Top Hat backwards.

Sorry I had to make it 11 rides

11. Greezed Lightnin' at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom
How many rides out there have a completely different experience in each seat? The launch is not as smooth as modern coasters out there, it is a fun fast coaster.

10. Manhattan Express/Roller Coaster at New York New York Resort
I do not understand all the hatred, this ride has an amazing ride course and was cleverly engineered to load and unload inside the building. I came off smiling ever time I rode it.

9. Philarmagic at Magic Kingdom
Alright, so it is not a ride, but a 4-D show...So What?! Nothing beats Donald Duck, classic Dinsey songs, and a killer story line. As far as 4-D shows go, this one gets an A+.

8. American Eagle at Six Flags Great America
An out and back classic racing coasters always catches the memories of any person. A perfect race on this ride is indescribable, and defiantly deserves its place on my top 10.

7. SkyHawk at Cedar Point
What a fun ride, with a lot of body freedom and air time. The ride is flawed by corporate ride cycles(short ride cycles), and I am excited to see what Silver Dollar City does with their Giant Swing.

6. Delerium at Paramount's Kings Island
Cedar Point should take some serious lessons from their sister park. Delerium had a long cycle with serious g's.

5. Voyage at Holiday World
Good Job Gravity Group and Holiday World! A modern wooden coaster with the classic feel. Voyage is one of the few coasters I know of that you spend more time out of your seat rather than in.

4. Starflyer at Orlando, Florida
Whirligig on craq! This ride does not want to let you have a single second of relaxation. I laughed the entire ride cycle.

3. 300 Ft Sky Coaster at Kissimee, Florida
Sky Coasters have always appealed to me, especially this one. The first second of free fall, that you notice the cables are not at full length yet. What a rush! I would love to ride from the extreme thrill ride category that tops that!

2. Vortex at Paramount's Kings Island
An arrow super looper that does not hurt nor make you cry. This ride was smooth from start to finish, minus one bad transition. Vortex has the classic look and feel. This is another ride I laughed the entire ride cycle.

-and the winner!-

1. Soarin' at Epcot
Perfection! This ride is the only ride I have ever been on where rides clapped at the end, and the were not acers!

8. Batman at SFGAm, Hated it at first but now I ride front row im loving it
7. Deja Vu at SFGAm, little shaky but I still love it.
6. Earthquake at Universal-Awesome ride, I love this ride. Very neat, cool effects
5. Pirates at Disney-I was 8 so I don't remember, all I remember is the song
4. Jaws at Universal-Scared me to death, didn't let go of my dad's arm for 4 hours after the ride was done
3. V2 at SFGAm, best ride
2. American Eagle at SFGAm, amazing ride. I love it too

and number one is

1. Raging Bull at SFGAm ULTIMATE BABY!!!

In case you guys haven't noticed yet, to me, a great ride is not necessarily the biggest, fastest, or highest ride around, but one that blows me away in all aspects...theme, ride experience, uniqueness, etc....and if the ride isn't smooth as hell, it's not worth it to me! So keeping that in mind, here's my top 10...

10) ET Adventure (USF)- No doubt, the most comfortable seats ever, i don't know why i was so comfortable and why i enjoyed this one so much, but i could stay on this ride forever. Hands down, the best kiddy ride ever!

9) Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon's Blast (USF)- The last and best of the childish attractions on my countdown and yet another most don't give a chance to. This is hands down the best simulator i've ever been on! It's energizing, good hearted, and the chicken dance sequence is the funnest sequence to ever hit a motion simulator!

8) Dinosaur (Animal Kingdom)- This is one hell of a dark ride! It's thrilling, wild (in a non rough way) and it takes my breath away every time. It's a hidden treasure at Disney to say the very least!

7) Lightning Racers (Hersheypark)- I said I love smooth rides and since this coaster is by far the smoothest woodie my butt has ever had the pleasure of experiencing, it's got a special place in my heart. Not to mention it has two versions (Thunder and Lightning) and it's got some really cool near misses.

6) Raptor (Cedar Point)- This is my favorite inverted coaster and my favorite at Cedar Point. It's what a good coaster is all about. It has a very strong finale with that helix, a great drop, many inversions, and it puts it all together in one beautiful and lengthy layout!

5) Raging Bull (SFGAm)- In terms of big coasters, I don't care what others may think, this thing is thrilling! It is just so much fun to ride, so comfortable, so long, and just everything I love in a large coaster!

4) Raven (Holiday World)- Can you say amazing? This wooden coaster is the king of woodies in my book, and shamefully took The Voyage's title of being the best in the park...at least for me. I know others will fight that :) Anyways, surprises around corner and worth the experience, especially at night!

3) Rock'n Roller Coaster (MGM)- Freakin awesome coaster!!! I LOVE Aerosmith and this coaster just really impressed me. Every detail, the music, the launch, the track layout, everything. It just blew me away!

2) Dudley Do-Righs Ripsaw Falls (IOA)- BEST WATER RIDE EVER!! It started off nothing spectacular with rather average theming, but once this thing picks up, it will become one of the greatest and thrillingist water/thrill rides you've ever encountered. I'm convinced it's half roller coaster!

1) REVENGE OF THE MUMMY (USF)- If i were to list all that is great about this ride, my post would be deleted for length! I actually kind of felt like i was going through withdrawel from it when i left. After only two days at this park, i've ridden this ride over 30 times and it's definitely my number 1 coaster of all time!

Honorable Mentions:

Vertical Velocity: The first five rides made this my favorite roller coaster ever, but after a while, it got a little boring. Still a great ride though!

Tennessee Tornado: The only Arrow looper that didn't cause headbanging, not to mention it has an amazing terrain!

Whizzer: Since this ride has done so much for me and since i can't go a day at Six Flags without riding it, I feel the obligation to mention it now.

Oh, and since i didn't know if these counted as rides, I also want to announce that Poseidon's Fury (IOA), Terminator 2 3D (USF), Fear Factor Live (USF), and It's Tough to be a Bug (Animal Kingdom) are the best shows I have ever seen at any park!
RIP: Trailblazer and Deja Vu...heck, even Alien Encounter :(

Fangs Up Cobra Style!!!

Chitown's finest resident here!!!!!

Did this ride recently get rehabed or something? Because I went on it 4 or 5 years ago and and didn't think it was that it was as great as everyone's making it out to be now.

^It was retracked lately. I think people like it so much because of what it does. For a log ride, it's got multiple drops, it's very long, it's thrilling, fast, and it manages to SOAK you, which doesn't happen often on flume rides. Plus, the drops are higher and steeper than most are used to. In terms of what it is, it's king!
