Area 51 was added in 2005 taking over basicaly nothing. It was refered to as a "Not so scary safe zone" with only occasional LAFF characters.
Seven Sins Cemetery was also added in 2005 again taking over basicaly nothingness. It was refered to as an "Extremly Scary Zone". It still had the zombie theme however.
Evil Mardi Gras was never there until mardi gras. So before that, it was still part of orleans place witch means it was in the same section as the "Extremly Scary Zone".
Pirate Harbor I believe has always been that way. Of course, they add things all the time.
Yukon Territory is always a nothingness zone. Its really the place for youngins.
Necropolis was added (correct me if i'm wrong) is 2000. The layout in Necro changes every year but before that, I forget the name but it was themed to a huanted camp ground with only about a third of the scenery it has now. It also never had the Maus until Necro opened.
Ok, County Fair never has anything except the music and haybals and hay stalks.
South West Territory has been for as long as i know South West SCAREitory. Its usualy themed to ghost people just walking around. However, the characters usualy change every year. Sometimes i've seen the clown cowboys though. And they added the haunted house only five years ago i think.
Thats it! Oh wait, the entrance. They didnt have it this year but they usualy have 7 foot charicature characters walking around. What i mean is tall people with cloaks and a HUGH plastic head.
Way to not reasearch....Now I've only been around for so long so here is an updated version of the above.
Carousel Plaza: 2006- The Cast of Dr. Fright's Dead man's Party would make meet and greets here between shows, and also the Casts of Hold Up Express and Welcome to my Nightmare would come out for meet-n-greets here before the nightly parade when they had some downtime.
2003-5: Home to the "Puppet characters" which pretty much have vanished into thin air. These characters also preformed "the Demon Revue" a mini- six flags party in the mornings.
2001-2 and possibly further back: Home to Crimson Death, Crimson Death's Wife, and others, various essentially well-dressed zombies. There are some pictures in the scrapbook on JPM's Website.
Hometown Square- Older Fright Fests: Was originally Area 51 when the "Mars Attacks" movie came out (Hence those original alien characters you still see in the entrance arch) and stayed area 51 for at least two years i believe. Later it became host to no scareacters ususally but featured street entertainment in the form of Dead Elvis, and of Course the Nightly Zombie Jamboree Parade, it should be noted that The nightly parade has been the zombie jamboree every single year except 1991, i can't think of the name off the top of my head, but i know it's been mentioned on this site before so do a search if you're really that curious. The Illinois Trollway is also located in this area near the transition to county fair, and has been there every year but 2003, where it rested on the bridge between what is now Mardi Gras and Yankee Harbor.
2005- Became Area 51 again to a very high profile debut, featuring the ever present Mad Scientist, 3 Aliens, and five commandoes. It also played Host to the Manny B. Monster Show on the parade stage, the Zombie Jamboree Parade, and of course LAFF in the grand Music Hall. Also of Course played host to the Illinois Trollway during the transition to County Fair.
2006- Once again was Area 51 with a reduced creature crew, but played host to the new Afternoon Parade "FREAK!" as well as the popular atmosphere show "Welcome to my Nightmare" taking place in the midway with one of the old trolleys as the background. Once again Love at First Fright Played in the grand music hall, and the cast of Welcome to My Nightmare joined the LAFF cast in the Zombie Jamboree.
LAFF- Debuted in 1991 and is STILL a capacity crowed every show, reaching record numbers in the 2006 season. The Original Cast Did not inclue Ghostina, or Witchie's sister. And also did not include the Numbers "Mean Green Mother" or "The Beast in me" In the early 90s the character "Zombina" was sacked in favor of "Ghostina" but in 2005 both characters appeared on stage at the same time. In 2006 another character was added to the show, Witchie's sister, who presumably was added simply because they were twins and it seemed like a nice way to get some word of mouth. (well we talked about it on here didn't we?) Correct me if i'm wrong, but i beleive that Mean green mother was added in the late 90s and Beast in me was added in 2001.
Southwest Territory- As long as i can remember Southwest SCAREitory has played host to the town of "Dead Man's Gulch" the creative team wrote a whole history from the town displayed to the public on several "Horror Markers" throughout the town. Some notable pieces of town history would be the "enfermeded del sepulcro" (Sickness of the Grave) an epidemic that wiped out many people, including the local natives the "Muerto Indians" and when Cheif Flying fox was the only one left he cursed the town of Dead Man's Gulch. Notable street characters include the ruthless Marshall Killin', His enemy Black Bart, Miss Sadie the owner of a local inn, and Padre Companero, a monk who went insane when his whole order was killed by the sickness of the grave and still rings the bells in the mission belltower today. For several years SWT was home to "Sadie's No-Chance Hotel" before become the "Dead and Breakfast" then later "Sleepy Hollow 3-D" the town square was home to a set of gallows on which a show was preformed several times daily.
In 2005- this whole idea was abandoned and three "rodeo Clowns" were placed in front of the Sleepy Hollow Haunted House.
2006- The Deadman's gulch theme returned, and played host to a new haunted house "The Curse 3-D" The remnants of Sadie's Inn after Flying Fox's Curse had taken over the town completly. The Returning characters were mostly "atmosphere characters" and performed a Gunfight show on the porch of the crazy buffalo saloon several times daily.
County Fair- Honestly County fair has never been that scary, there isn't much opportunity for it, it's not a great zone. It has however in the past played host to some generic zombie characters. In 2005 Ol' Man Graves from the Scooby Doo Mystery Train entertained guests outside the Fairgrounds Junction. in 2003 the ameri-go-round area was home to the clowns before they moved over to mardi gras in 2004.
2006- This year, county fair was set to be a bit of a mish-moshed zone featuring several Werewolf Characters, moved from orleans place, as well as new Scarecrow and Gypsy Characters. However last minute budget cuts returned the werewolves to county fair and sacked the scarecrows and gypsies.
The Train- For many years the train was the famous "Boo Line" in 2001 it was replaced with the "Pigman" show...reveiws were never that great so the idea moved down to St. Louis' frgiht fest where it still stands today, and in 2002 the railroad did not operate under frightful conditions. in 2003 the wildly popular Scooby Doo Mystery Train debuted. For the first time a plot stretching throughout fright fest was created when the angry son of a ruby miner stole Mayor Slayer's ruby encrusted caine and framed his father. Mayor Slayer Never actually appeared in the show for all three years it was in production, but was mentioned in the pre-show by Ol' Man Graves. In 2006 Scooby Doo was replaced with Hold up Express a show where several zombie robbers hijack the train and are eventually were defeated. Scooby doo was set to return to the train until the budget cuts in august. Hold Up express was cast in august and the plot costumes etc.. were essentially left up to the cast. and From what they had to work with (essentially nothing) they did a great job, and i think we can expect great things from the train shows in the future.
NECROPOLIS- Has been around all but two years of fright fest's 16 year run. The first year it was "Camp Hideaway" and then transformed into necropolis home to the famous "Mayor Slayer" character and his whole crazy gang of zombies in the haunted city of the dead. As well as the Mausoleum of terror haunted house.
In 2001 necropolis was replaced with "Alice Cooper's Brutal Planet" Honestly i know absolutly nothing about this so if anyone journeyed into Brutal Planet here, info would be appreciated.
in 2002 it returned by popular demand. In 2005 a new character was added "Satan Claws" and his "Hoe Hoe Hoe Elves" The park received so many complaints about this character, that though he was set to return next year he was cut last minute in order to be more family freindly. Of course now it is also home to P.T. Scarum's Freaks and Geeks Side show, another wildly popular outdoor show, which incidenly borrowed it's stage from 2005's character show "we got the beat" Necropolis also suffered budget cuts in the 2006 season, carrying only 16 charaters versus 25 the year before.
Yukon has always been home to not-so-scary characters, however in 2006 all the characters in this section were scrapped thanks to budget cuts, but it was still home to Looney Tunes, Cartoon netwok, and justice league characters until 3.
Yankee Harbor was pirate harbor as long as i could remember, and then later Haunted Harbor and had pirate characters there in the 90s, then it had no charaters for several years until they Had "Freddy Versus Jason" on the bridge and then the pirates returned in 2005.
Mardi Gras- in 2003- the freddy versus jason characters hung out in mardi gras as well as yankee harbor and have since been home to the evil clowns.
Orleans Place- Previous to 2003 it was home to "King Louis" "Marie Antoiette" Vencian and Mardi Gras Revelers" and of course the werewolves. in 2003 it was unoffcially "Nightmare on Bourbon Street" home to several Buffy Vampires, some werewolves and some Sliding characters. In 2005 it was home to the high profile debut of new scare zone "Seven Sins Cemetary". in 2006 SSC was set to be just vampires and having the werewolves and sliders move to county fair. but it was scrapped when budget cuts cut down the creature crew. Susan Rosan also deserves a mention in here 2006 was her 11th season at the park. in the late 90s/early 00s she was replaced with a magic show of some kind but the outcry was huge and returned the next year.
BTW- Happy Thanksgiving!
PS- That's all i feel like typing right now. Fright Fest has had many smaller changes over the years. If you have any more specific questions, i just realized i completly left out transformed rides besides the train, just ask.
Necropolis was Brutal Planet about 6 years ago if I remember correctly. It featured an entrance that had two huge like smoke stacks on either side as you entered. It was an industrial theme. There was actually kind of a path you followed and during the course of you encountered "The Controller" who, if anyone has seen Alice Cooper's Brutal Planet Tour is the first scene and warns you of impending doom and dispair that the city has been taken over. The controller was an extremely cool illusion. Next up was the hotel with the vampire and mirror and so on. Next you encountered a seance scene where you stood in a circle and touched upside down steam table pans that as the medium spoke, if you were touching a pad you got shocked by the the spirits..lol. Next up was the gypsy in a crystal ball that talked to you and could see you but you could not see her.
Next you went into the Brutal Planet Haunt (Mausoleum of Terror) and they had hard hitting industrial music and sound effects. Alot of the props are still used for the haunt like the rotating wheel and electric chairs. That's all I can remember but it was the Best theme for that area Ive seen.

Candy: What you lookin' at? Otis B. Driftwood: I'm lookin' at you, mama. Candy: Yeah, you see something you like? Otis B. Driftwood: Maybe. I set my standards pretty low, so I'm never disappointed.

there was no mardi gras in 2003. Great info though...it's nice to hear about how some of the things at fright fest were before the way they are now. personally, i've only been going to FF since 2002, so i didn't know about some of that other stuff.
I remember the Magic Show that took over Theater Royale that year, it was kind of weird. That magician had been there for that summer....that's how i met a few of the LAFF cast members that year.
Personally, though it was a bit corny, I liked the train. with hearing that the budget was really small, it did look kind of nice.
Freddy and Jason were technically on the bridge between What is now Mardi Gras and Yankee Harbor, so they hung out on both sides. And when i say mardi gras i mean the area it currently resides.
