Is SFGAM going down hill??

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.
Postby Bob O on August 26th, 2006, 1:27 pm
I havent been to SFGAM much in the past few weeks(but will be visiting tomorrow) but have people seen any changes that are bad at the park lately. Ive seen several trip reports that have been negative toward the park in regards to rides being down/a lack of atmosphere/unhappy-unfriendly workers etc, with some people blaming this on recent cutbacks etc.
So what do the people here think, are these unfounded comments or is there some truth to them?? My only thought is the last time i went about 10 days ago I didnt see as many characters in the park as i did earlier in the year but i might have just been in the wrong place when they were out.

The only thing I can say is to look at the ride status topic. Other than that, I don't really see anything else that's a problem. Some rides are just busted, and they can't do anything about it, but just leave them there (until they get money next year). Of course, they are going to lose people that way because so many just don't work at all for next year.

The people that are there for mostly not a lot of staffing days are actually the people that don't really like all the flats (roller coaster fans), and they don't really care if they are down or not. Some will open at one time, and then others will open.

They still open though. Seeing motionless rides is only going to make the public think this park is another Magic Mountain (This is in the views of a lot of people thinking that SFMM is a bad place even though I don't agree.)

A big problem for this park, and probably other parks is the fact that the roller coaster or new rides are not open when the park opens. This usually leaves a park that isn't really packed when it opens. People also don't realize that the park is open. They know that it's open in July, August, and October, but they might not realize the other days that it is open until many commercials actually say it.

How many people think that they want to ride the new ride, but yet it's not open in early season, so why should they go to the park then??? It's really good for me, but it's bad for Great America in general!!!

I see where Bob O is coming from. This sort of thing happens every year, though. Rides are down, unfortunatly this year more than usual because of staffing issues and the fact that a few rides are down for mechanical reasons and will be like that most likely until the end of the season. Last time I was there I only saw one character in the front of the park, most crews were running the normal speed, but you could just tell that the park was really half assing what they were doing. It may be because of budget cuts, I don't know but things seemed different.

All you have to do is be friendly to someone that's working and looks like they enjoy their job. We got 10 for free

We went Thursday for a few hours, and everything was fine. Deja Vu was closed, but I beleive evrything else was up and running. We saw Green Latern, Batman, and Robin, and I always seemed to get a "Hi, or Hello" when passing workers. One of the ride-ops in Cartoon Network was running around giving the adults high fives. Didn't see many of the Looney Tunes caracters though.

The park was pretty much dead, but that was probably because alot of schools had already started, and which is why I will be taking a day off of work to go there sometimes this week.

So in short, I have not seen the changes of attitude in the park employees.

this time of year things do kind of slow down, or aren't as good as they usually are. People go back to school, and some rides don't work as well. I went on august 13th, and i thought for the most part (except the ignorant guests in HH that day) the park was normal for the most part.

I went on Sun. and it was a very busy day with a large corporate group at the park. I found the employee's to be very friendly and the ride-ops were doing a very good job. It did seem that more rides were down than normal and i saw few characters at the park. Other than the opening dance the only one's I saw were Daffy Duck and Sylvester once, but no justice league people at all
PS-One peeve i do have is the lack of paper towels in the bathrooms!!!!!!!!!! The bathrooms were very clean!!
The hand dryers suck!!!! So one likes paper towles to wipe off your hands use the bathroom by Firehouse pizza as they still have paper towels.

I saw Batman there that day. He was in Hometown Square with a huge line.

Those are awful hand dryers. If they don't want to deal with much paper towels then they need the hand dryers we have in some of the bathrooms at our school. Not only does it dry your hands incredibly fast, but it's pretty entertaining too. :)

Call me crazy but I've only used my season pass once this year. For some reason, or many reasons, I have no desire to go to SfGam because I know I won't have fun. And the only thing that will be scary about FF this year will be the crowds and downtime!

I've used my CP pass nine times this year and that park is 6 hours away. But being a thrill seeker only with no family to bring along, I feel ALOT more welcome at CP and will just go there more. They know the whole "family" approach won't work. Case in point, everytime I go out to sandusky I end up going with 2 or more adults who've never been there and will end up spending more than a family would anyways. And as we speak another bad arse coaster is going up...

I also will get season passes for Noahs Ark and Mt Olympus next year instead of SfGam.

Just had to say it because its true. My SfGam boycott begins! My next visit will be when there is a new coaster at LEAST 200ft.

Enjoy posting your "one less person in line" remarks now...

If Cedar Point was doing as good as some would leave us to believe they would not have been forced to reduce admission prices and some junk food in a attempt to prop up attendance, which hasnt worked.

Why, heres a couple off the top of my head:
-Huge price up on everything
-Smoking sections
-Making a tornado the big 06 attraction (No plans on a big attraction anytime soon)
-I don't like new owner
-Crowds. I know they're in it to make money but giving away season passes in August is a little much.

However the gas prices also played a huge role in me not attending Gam this year also...parks can't control that.

And lowering admission prices did help. I know several people who would go the distance to save 15 plus dollars at the gate. The numbers will show that. And lower the price on food! Junk or not...just lower them!

^ Gas prices were one of the reasons you didn't go to GA alot this year, but yet you travel over 6 hrs away, nine times to go to Cedar Point. :?

I know several people who would go the distance to save 15 plus dollars at the gate

You mean by going to Cedar Point? If you are, great you save $15 on admission, but you spent $50+ on gas.

They know the whole "family" approach won't work

Yeah, Disney has really suffered over the years.

-Huge price up on everything

With an SP you should be spending less, food is the same (except Papa Johns) and merch is definitley cheaper than last year.

-Smoking sections

I find it kinda nice walking down the midways without discusting smoke being blown all over the place.

-Making a tornado the big 06 attraction (No plans on a big attraction anytime soon)

Research shows SF that a new ride isnt what people are looking for, they want improved entertainment and better ride uptime. Obviosley the park has enough problems with resources maintaining the rides they have now, a large new attraction would really just make the park worse.

-I don't like new owner

Six Flags is a public company, ticker symbol SIX in the NYSE.

I dont care if you boycott the park or whatever, but you're being a hater for all the wrong reasons :).

In terms of "going downhill" well SF goes "downhill" every year around this time because they spend so much money trying to improve the parks at the beginning of the year they run out, which would explain the big entertainment cuts. The best thing Shapiro can do now is continue with his strategy and SELL PARKS! The more parks he sells, the less money drained out of GAm's budget giving the park more $$ to work with throughout the season. Eventually when SF only has the major parks, they wont be loosing money and will be able to better budget the season.
