Geauga Lake loses Mr. Hyde (a.k.a. THE EDGE)

Talk about anything that has to do with the amusement park industry here.
Postby [jonrev] on March 14th, 2006, 4:24 pm
According to the Wikipedia article on SFGAm, Geauga Lake has removed Mr Hyde's Nasty Fall and has scrapped it.

For those (few) who dont know this used to be the Edge that operated at SFGAm.

They were trying to sell it, and I guess no one wanted it? Is CP's also going? I really think it's dumb that your biggest park out of the chain is right near one of your parks in the chain. On top of it, SF failed, so why wouldn't Cedar Fair not fail?

CP is supposedly selling it, but if nobody bids or buys it, they'll keep it.

A furious storm once roared `cross the sea, catching ships in its path, helpless to flee. Instead of a certain and watery doom, the winds swept them here to Typhoon Lagoon!

It is still up for sale, but is being removed from GL. It will most likely be stored til either a buyer is found or it has detiorated beyond use, whichever comes first

I never understood why they would just scrap an attraction for the heck of it. It makes no sense to me. I'm sure there's maintanance costs, but those can't be too much.

^You can keep for a while, but no one is going to buy it if it doesn't go right away. That shows that no one has interest in it. No one wants the ride. The people in the park don't want to ride it anymore. It is very old, and costs a fortune to repair. Why keep a ride if no one wants to ride it for the most part (maybe 400 over 2,000,000 want to ride it)? How about adding a new attraction for next year? Superman gets a whole lot people compared to Shockwave (at the end of its term) whether you want to believe it or not. The last years of Shockwave, it had tons of walk-on times. If it was crowded, do you think I would ride it.

Back to Mr. Hyde, wouldn't you rather see a new attraction compared to an old beat up ride? If the ride looks beat up, people don't want to come to your park for the fact that they think it is turning into a garbage dump.

Yeah I would rather have a new attraction, but we're talking about getting rid of it and having an open area where it once stood. If you are going to get a new ride the next year, don't get rid of the old ride until the next year and, in the mean time, keep the ride open and it won't just stand there and age itself.

I totally agree with this philosophy. I think they should have done the same with Power Dive. When you done with the ride, take it out, and put a new ride in. They chose to let it sit there (supports), and put nothing else in.

I thought I heard (at NoCoasterConvention) that Mr. Hyde's good parts were being sent to Cedar Point to keep Demon Drop going till a buyer comes along or a new ride is bought for the spot!

Yes, I think they're only planning on selling Demon Drop (there is a large For Sale sign literally right in front of it on the midway). It sounds like Mr. Hyde's Nasty Fall is so depreciated that it can't be sold at all, and the good parts won't do much good selling by themselves because there aren't many Gen 1 Freefalls still around. I'm guessing that they'll continue operating Demon Drop through 2006, and if there's still no buyers, take it out. Considering there's a For Sale sign up, they must be anxious to get rid of it.

^That stinks. I have always wanted to ride one and somehow always miss my chance. I guess I'll have a reason to go to Cedar Point this year. :)
