Top Thrill Dragster wheel accident

Talk about anything that has to do with the amusement park industry here.
Postby Drkstarboard on February 4th, 2006, 12:57 pm
I downloaded a Top Thrill Dragster video from a site (It's a good video too). There was a discription of the video before you chose to download it. The description went something like this:

This video has all the themeing on still (the back wheels, and the engine, etc). This was the same day of the wheel accident, however we left before it happens.

Does anyone know what the wheel accident was? How it happened? Anything?
It's green. It's blue. It's all over you! Enjoy your ride on Déjà Vu

Can't be too old since it was built in 2003. It was before they added the lights on the tower. There was only one set of lights on the tower.

I believe yellow train lost a wheel going up/down after the launch. It was one of the wheels on the back with the scenery. No one got hurt since it landed in that patch of grass but i think they removed all the scenery from the trains after that happened.

A furious storm once roared `cross the sea, catching ships in its path, helpless to flee. Instead of a certain and watery doom, the winds swept them here to Typhoon Lagoon!

Just go to: http://www.Coasterimage.com, then go to videos on the top and then find Top Thrill Dragster on the bottom. It doesn't show the wheel coming off though. Tell me what you think of it if you download it.

It seems to go faster with the scenery on the ride, compared to without it, at least during the Top Hat, or is it just that the video is sped up? It seems that adding more passengers to the train slowed it down on the top, and has a better chance to rollback. I don't know. Is the video just sped up, or in real time?? With the scenery on it, did it have a lot of rollbacks?

Well, if 2 180 pound riders were added to the trains it would slow it down. Im sure the scenery didnt wiegh that much so there was more weight causing it go go slower up the tophat.

Actually the "scenery" or theming, weighed a lot more than you could imagine.

That picture should help you understand the weight of the back row theming

Why would a local paper from Illinois (where you live, by the way) publish an article about "the twister ride"?

I can tell you that is completely false.

This is the deal with Wicked Twister...

Shortly after its construction it was found that the supports for the twists at the front and back of the ride were inadequate. This lead to stress fractures beginning to occur at the joins of the pieces of track. To help try to solve this problem, almost nightly a welding crew would climb up and repair the broken welds and add in more stiffening bars. This also led to signifigant downtime for the ride. To solve the problem new support beams that extend higher up the spiral were later added. At no point did the ride ever break off.
