Simple or complex explanation? You choose. I'll tell you that we are not in the jetstream right now-it's further north. The pattern we're in is more typical of mid to late June than mid May. Low pressure systems have been riding on the southerly fringe of the northerly jet stream over the US Canada border. The systems drift somewhat south and get cut off from the upperlevel driving winds. Other than the cold front we had yesterday, the fronts have not had too much momentum behind them and they stall out easily when experiencing strong southerly winds. As was the case one Friday the storms fired in extremely unstable (low CINH levels, high CAPE and LI, good shear and moisture convergance) and were able to quickly become severe. Saturday we experienced a late night convective line leftover from toranadic supercell thunderstorms over Iowa. The rest of the day was somewhat clear as a cold front went through (clearing out the stationary boundry). Sunday unstable air (very nice hodo's and shear profiles) was in place ahead of a rapidly advancing cold front. The storms blew up along a broken line. Today, thunderstorms will fire over Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Western Illinois along a dryline. Some of the storms may form another derecheo event that might turn north and hit the southern parts of Chicago land. Otherwise the stormy pattern looks to have lifted as a blocking pattern may be setting up.
Any questions?
Oh, and stationary fronts are bad because they can spark severe weather over the same area may days in a row, but a cold front or dryline can spark supercell thunderstorms a lot easier. All fronts have to be reconed with (the April 20th outbreak was sparked by a warm front).
Edit- I would like to see any pictures/movie clips from yesterday too.
I wasn't in the warning. The watch:Yes but not the warning. I live about 45 minutes(or even less) from SFGAm, but my uncle's girlfriend and my little cousins were in Jewel when the sirens went off. They were locked in and no one would let anyone out.
It's green. It's blue. It's all over you! Enjoy your ride on Déjà Vu
Ill tell you guys my experiece at the park yesterday with my sisters and my friend.
My friend and I got off DV and my sister was on the next train. We told my sister we would wait for her to get off so we went into the line down by the exit. The train got back into the station and the floor wouldnt come up. The line got closed off so we decided to talk to one of the ride ops until my sister got off. 10 minutes later when my sister got off it started to rain and a supervisor came up to us and told us that it wasnt going to reopen. By that time it was 20 minutes before closing so we decided to head out. It started to rain harder so we decided to stand under the wood covering that connects the ticket booths. My sister wanted to see if my parents were at the drop off so she went half way and came back. She convinced us to go to the hut thats over at the drop off. It started to rain harder so we hurrying to get under it. Once we got under it it hailed ofr about 10 seconds. A few minutes later my sister wanted to go find my other sister so we followed her. We spotted her right away and told her to come under the hut. By this time there were massive dark clouds in the sky. All of a sudden I heard this message going off in the park but I had a hard time making it out. Once it started up again just a minute later I heard that it was a recording for the tornado warning. It said something like- There is a tornado in the area, do not call 911. Then some numbers and the radio station 780 was stated. My one sister for some reason wanted to go back to the park so we chased after her. A cop car came by us and told us to get under some shelter. The closest thing was the stroller and wheelchair rental building so we went under there. I was watching the sky outside and it looked like a tornado was starting to form but a mintue later that part of the cloud spread out. That made me mad since I wanted a tornado since the first watch announcement was made around 2:00 in the park. My sister got ahold of my parents and they were going to be at the park in a few minutes. Once they I wanted to wait around because my friends mom didnt get to the park to pick him up. We got in our car and went to the drop off and about 10 minutes later his mom got there. We left the park in a bit of a hurry.
I had a good time during the tornado warning. Lots of people were freaking out while I was getting excited for the possible tornado. I feel bad for the people in Gurnee because when we were near the park we saw a good amount of flooding already. I wonder how long the park is going to be closed because of the floods.
I don't think it will be closed at all. I believe Gurnee had a flood about 10 years ago or so. It was worse than this one but still nothing drastic happened.

The NWS predicts record flooding by tomorrow. This one will be an inch or two above 1986's flood.
Luckly I live on top of one of the many hills that surround that part of Gurnee. Now 2 lakes/very big ponds have already flooded most of the forest near my apartments but I live on the 2nd floor so I am not worried about it.
I do feel bad for the residents in that part of Gurnee and the Residents of Des Plaines that have to deal with this flood problem.
This is where I would usually put stuff. Can't think of anything right now... =/
How is the weather out by Gurnee to anyone who lives out there? I was thinking about taking a drive out there but it is horrible in Lockport today. Pourin g down rain and thunder.
Looking at the radr it looks as if more rain is coming their way. Flooding has occured in Cook County around my area. Minor flooding. Most likely an inch has fallen as earlier predicted. Looks as if Gurnee will get the same. Hopefully nothing bad will come of this for folks along the rivers.
I was 1 mile from a Tornado that was right infront of my car on my way back from IB. Very scarry scene to say the least. No damage however. Which is good
Galvan, do we know what it ranked on the fugita scale? Also I did hear about a possible touchdown. Has'nt been confirmed yet. Good to hear no damage though. Also, do you know how long it was on the ground, if it did touchdown?
My friend in Indianapolis told me that a funnel cloud passed over his house then actully touched down.
Scary stuff right there. His house is ok and since he is on Aim and such, looks like he has power as well, so thats some good news for him.
This Tornado season has been very active, least in this month. From the 22-30 there have been 401 reports of Tornados bringing this month's count up to more than 500 tornados. If any of that is wrong please feel free to correct me.
