Six Flags Locker Policy backlash hits Consumerist.com

Talk about anything that has to do with the amusement park industry here.
Postby [jonrev] on June 12th, 2008, 12:27 pm
Thought it might be an interesting read for some of us.

http://consumerist.com/tag/six-flags/?i ... 1-per-ride

160 comments from the (mostly) GP and counting.

General consensus-

-SF likes to nickel and dime, even worse when food prices are so high.

-Hershey, Dorney, Knoebels are better alternatives.

-Universal gets it right with free lockers.

-Dark Knight is crummy.

More complaining at:
http://forums.fark.com/cgi/fark/comment ... nk=3661245

I like this comment from the Fark link:
1. sit on bench with sign watch bags for .25
2. ???
3. Profit!

1 bag
6 BAGS!!!!---MORE BAGS, MORE MONEY!!! Sounds more like drugs

I think this is funny though. I knew it would back fire, the GP is pissed, SF will eventually be loosing money. And now they do the "buy one get one free". Why cant they just lower the admission to a standard gate fee of $45, dont require the lockers and lower parking to $15 like last year...and they will get SO MANY more people to come.

Just saying Universal has free lockers for the first hour.
Just sayin.

I can see the people on there who want to bring a simple cup with them to the station or something.
But the people who are complaining about not being able to bring their backpakcs on a 200ft roller coaster, come on. That's just an accident waiting to happen. People get hurt when coins fall from GD, let alone a backpack.

God damn.

I don't see a problem with just leaving stuff in your car or just giving up the $9 for an all day locker. When me and the wife go the only locker we get is in HH. People never had a problem leaving stuff in their car before, but now with the ride lockers it isn't fair? Can some one explain this to me, when did looking for the cheapest thing become so hard for people to do?

I would do an all day locker before I spend a $1.00 a ride, because thats the price of 9 rides when you would go on the rides with lockers maybe more then 9, like say bull 2, TDK 1, BTR 3 SUF 1, Eagle 3, your spending more then $9, so if your in that just buy an all day locker...Or hide your stuff like behind a wall or in a bush.

^ ^ and ^I agree with the last three posters. Taking items on a ride can really affect the safety of the other people on the ride if the person holding it fails to hold onto it for some reason.

I think its better to get the $9 locker (or leave in car, if possible)as you get unlimited entry to it all day vs. putting them in the temp locker at the ride and then if the ride goes down for some reason and your stuck in line, theres a long line or for some reason you cant get to the locker in time you don't have to worry about the items being removed. I can see if you have to carry something on for emergency reason which could be put in a pouch or something that is attached to the person securely. Getting the 9 dollar locker also wont limit you to how many rides you get on because you ran out of money to put in the 1 dollar lockers....

I liked one posters idea:

"Lets just designate one large pile in the center of the park thats called "A place to put your Stuff, no gaurentees it'll still be here when you get back." Station one employee in the big piles of stuff and then people have to option to pay to keep their stuff somewhere in lockers or not pay and put it in the pile.

I remember when Superman opened and they wouldn't let loose articles into the line. There was always a big pile of loose articles to the right of the line.

One thing that I have noticed is that some items do get by the employee's watching over the line. Of course, when the guest arrives at the loading platform with a large item that should have been placed into a locker, the employee gives the guest a few options
1) Give the item to a non-rider at that point
2) Leave the ride and put item in locker, and re-wait
3) Throw the item away

I've seen all three happen at Eagle. There was one kid who won a basketball, and threw it in a garbage can, and then got on the ride. I've also seen people leave with their item without getting a ride. I'm not sure if they went down and got a locker, and waited again.

The last one that I have seen is give the item to a non-rider. I've seen many cases were other guests in line have offered to hold said item until the person gets back, and these people are total strangers! In fact, last Saturday, I was waiting for the front seat on Eagle, and this guy got on with a large backpack. The people in front of me offered to hold it, and then realized that eagle had 2 trains per side. I then said something, and held the item for the guy. When the train came back in, I gave the guy his backpack back. He wanted to pay me a few bucks, but I said that was not needed. If you wanted to pay, use the lockers..I'm saving you money! :) The guy was serious too, as he pulled out his wallet and and had a few bucks in his hand ready to give them to me.

A lot of guests that I have talked to in line don't like the policy. They all felt that the bins in the station were safe, and did the job that they were designed for.

^ Slight correction on the 2nd option. If they don't have a non-rider to give it to, they are suposed to be given a card that allows them to leave to store the item, and then re-enter through the exit.

That's a good one...but I think no matter what the park decides to do on the loose article policy, someone will always be pissed about it. And that's business 101: you can't always please everyone.

I don't see why many peope feel the need to bring an entire bag or even a damn purse to the parks. You don't need all of that crap. Just wear some pants/shorts with good pockets, or get your partner to hold your few things in their pockets. That's what I usually do. Just the cell phone, season pass, cash, and MAYBE my camera sometimes if I feel like it.

Unless of course you want to go to the water park, you need your towels and other important essentials... All you have to do is leave it in the car when you don't need it.

Meh, random rant.

I think problems like this can easily be handled, and once again I look to Disney for the solution.

Image

This is located inside the train on California Screamin' at Disney's California Adventure. Perhaps if more rides were fitted with this, there would be much less safety issues. I'm not sure, however, if Disney has some sort of patent on this, but I don't doubt clever minds can get around it.

EDIT: Might I add, it is as big as one of those lockers found at Six Flags... oh... and free.
Every jumbled pile of person has a thinking part that wonders what the part that isn't thinking, isn't thinking of.

Maybe I feel this way because I don't have a family who needs a bunch of stuff with them, but why do people need to bring big bags to the park anyways? The car works perfectly fine for me. I just take what i need, wear pockets that fit my stuff, and if not, then I don't bring it. I laugh at the people with the huge backpacks most of the time beecause I don't get why they need them. If you need to bring your swim stuff for the waterpark, then get a locker in there, and when you're done, go back to the car. There's no law about how many times you can go out to the car. Same with the huge stuffed animals. Put them in the car rather than carry them around. Then you don't have to drag that huge thing around all day. Like i said, maybe this is how i feel because I don't have a family that needs a big bag of snacks and things for their kids, but I just don't get why people need to bring enough stuff for an overnight stay with them to a theme park.

Its not surprising at all that disney has a better family friendly solution to the problem than SF, which helps explain why one company is profitable and another is deelply in debt and is trying to make it up by screwing there guests.

The policy that they had before was just fine, provide bins AT NO charge to be used at your own risk.
If this was being done for safety, which its not, then they would make you use a locker at EVERY ride. But instead they just nickel and dime guests at the more popular attractions.

Thanks for the links and nice to see that alot of non fanboys of SF can see the stupdity of the locker policy!!

They made the lockers since they lost so much money with deja vu and the dark knight. Dejavu was to costly to repair and pay those construction workers, and while building the dark knight! GA lost a ton of money this year, the next roller coaster will probably be in like 3 years!
