A Plan for SFNO

Talk about anything that has to do with the amusement park industry here.
Postby bigb7965 on April 23rd, 2008, 5:16 pm
"According to this article from NOLA.com, there has been a new proposal submitted for the redevelopment of Six Flags New Orleans as another mega amusement park. Southern Star Amusement Group has submitted a plan to the city of New Orleans the proposes spending $70 million to reopen the park by next summer.

The group also submitted a letter from Six Flags saying they are in talks with them to purchase the land and the lease they had with the city to operate the park.

Southern Star wants to have a water park opened on the site by 2009, which will be expanded upon for several years after that. Plans also included doubling the number of rides at the facility, adding an RV park, creating 5 new themed areas in the amusement park, and eventually trying to expand the property into a full resort.

These are some seriously ambitious plans, but if they can go through that'd be great! Another attempt at a theme park on the site would be better than it sitting and rotting like it is now."

If that does come true, it will be a pretty big park! 5 themed sections seems like a lot to expand on! Hopefully they will get some new coasters and re-open some existing ones that aren't damaged or can be fixed/repaired easily. I'm sure at least 1 or two coaster are gonna come down that isn't needed no longer for expanding space. Sound like it's going to be great if it happens! After the hurricane and all the flooding which made the park close down, they're adding a waterpark? I guess it's good for hot summer days though will attract a lot of guests. Hopefully they will also change some of the existing coaster's names because some of them had strange names.
Top 3 Steel Coasters: 1. The Incredible Hulk 2. Maverick 3. Dragon Challenge (Fireball)

Top 3 Wood Coasters: 1. The Beast 2. American Eagle (Red) 3. Hades

I really hope it works out well for them. It'd be neat to see the park operational. However, they have a lot of work to do...

I like the idea of it, but I still think the market of people that will go to it will be pretty light in their opening years due to the process of things going on down there. I sure hope they anticipate a slow start...

According to their website, Southern Star Amusement is having a SFNO park re-naming contest. Whoever wins gets a season pass.

Friends and Families of the Gulf Coast,

It has been a busy ten months as we have worked to revive the former Six Flags New Orleans property. After working very diligently, we have reached a point in this project where we are no longer able to pursue reopening this park. We cannot comment as to any situations that have or may have impacted our decision. We remain committed to pursuing opportunities along the Gulf Coast and have not given up on our plans on establishing a park here. We look forward to releasing information in the near future on our future growth.

Warmest Regards,

Christopher Sweeney

errr, this is cool for them, but more and more I wish they will just sell our park to a successful theme park company. No doubt six flags is successful, they just aren't doing so 'well'.

Six Flags hasnt been anything even remotely close to successful in the past decade+, and since the mid 90's or so SF has been hemorrhaging cash.

And I have no clue what you're talking about, Six Flags is paying 1.4 million dollars a year in rent for what used to be SFNO, Southern Star not being able to reach a deal means SF has to keep paying the rent for approximately the next 70 years, or until they agree to sell the park to someone, and right now nobody is interested. Basically with Six Flags not accpeting Southern Stars Offer, they effectively let potientially up to $90,000,000 walk out the door. They literally should have given the park and it's rent payment away for free to S.S. and walk away with their insurance payment. It's another nail in the coffin.
