Q. But at $40 a guest, has family fun become unaffordable for the average household?
A. Absolutely not. Baseball’s opening day was earlier this week, and I was watching the news and heard that the average ticket price for a baseball game is in the mid-$20’s. And that’s just to get into the game. Forget about parking, food, souvenirs. And the game only lasts two hours. At Six Flags, the average ticket price is $21, and there are discounts all over the community, from Coke to McDonald’s, that cut into that even further. And the parks are open about 12 hours a day.
And the season pass is even a better value. You can get into a park every day all season long for $50 to $60. Try buying a season ticket to the Yankees or Red Sox or Cubs. You’d likely be paying several hundred dollars.

Mid $20's for a SF ticket, wonder what he smoked, must have been good, unless he was talking just about parking, case it's damn near there

Well the lower the price, the more people who will come into the park

Most if not all SF parks are between $45 and $60 to enter, $21 on average would be more than a 50% discount, and if that's average, that means some pay less than that.

Not the way I read it.
To quote what Mike wrote

The way I read that, Mark Shapiro is saying that the Average price of a SF Ticket is $21. Then, when you add in the discounts, that price goes down. So, with the discount, your average ticket price would be less then $21.
To really see if that is true, one must look at every SF park in the chain, and write down each one's one-day admission price. Then, add them all up and divide by the total number of parks. If someone wants to take the time to do the math and the work, we can see if Mark S is telling the truth or not. I'm willing to bet the average is not $21, but more towards $30 or $35. Of course, I don't have all the numbers in front of me, so I could be wrong, and he could be right.
EDIT
I took the time and went out to the SF main webpage, and found the Ticket price for a one-day admission ticket puchased at all the parks. The park list I used came from the pull-down "Pick a park" from the main page. I excluded parks from this list that are no longer SF parks.
One Day Adult Ticket, purchased at the gate
Total Parks listed: 20
Parks with Ticket Prices: 14
Average Price of admission for parks with Tickets: $44.28
I assume that his average was the average PAID for a ticket- including discounts. Very few people pay the listed price and if they do, they are not doing their discount research because there is always a discount to be found.
if you can tell me where people are finding all these 50+% discounts, I'll fall for this steaming pile of BS
Most discounts I see are $10-$20 off admission price, even at $20 off which is for a very limited time and usually only like early and late season weekdays, that's still not a $21 ticket, unless you are at the Great Escape which is not a Six Flags Branded Park and should not be counted.

Prices are insane. $55 to get in? What a rip off. Prices should be $45... how are families supposed to afford getting into the park? Lower prices means more people, which offsets the cost of having lower prices.
Wasn't attendance lower last year due to the higher admission prices?
^If you are paying full price for a ticket it is your own fault. They are always running a discount of some sort. They are making their real money on people like you who don't search them out.

If there are always discounts anyway why not lower the prices to $45-50? $55 simply looks high so it turns people away even if there are discounts.
My guess would be that with discounts people perceive they are getting an awesome discount/value, when in fact with the discount they are paying about actual market value, make people feel better. Alot of it is psychology.
Also figure probably only 50-75% of people use the discounts so the rest of the people put more $$ in SF pockets, SF might as well go for the most $$ they can if people are willing to pay it.
