When you go to Great America, do you eat the food in the park or tailgate? If you tailgate what foods do you bring and how do you pack it?
Candy: What you lookin' at? Otis B. Driftwood: I'm lookin' at you, mama. Candy: Yeah, you see something you like? Otis B. Driftwood: Maybe. I set my standards pretty low, so I'm never disappointed.
When I go to SFGAm I always leave the park for lunch, either fast food on Grand or one of the nicer places in the area depending on the mood, but for tailgating your options are pretty limited as any type of open flame is prohibited. Basically cold sandwiches or microwave food if you have an inverter.

I usually only eat in the park about twice a year. However, with seeing how useful the new Dining Pass could be to someone who visits 5+ times a year, that could change. When I tailgate I just get a subway or jersey mikes sub in the morning and throw it in a cooler.

I tried the Subway in the cooler thing. For some reason it was awful, mushy. We had a ice thing on the bottom and top inside the cooler. Willing to try it again though.

The bread on the side near the ice usually gets soggy from condensation.
I usually leave the park to eat as well. I don't have the dining pass, and I'm not sure if I'd actually use it as much as needed to get the value out of it.

Just ask them to double or triple wrap it then. Should fix your problem.
I get a funnel cake and/or Fiesta Fries once a year; otherwise I walk to BK or Fat Ron's for lunch. On the rare occurrence that I spend an entire day there, it's nice to leave the park for a bit and regroup.
Have you seen the price of a funnel cake sundae? Holy cow!!! 14.99.

In my years of going to SFGAm our group only packed and brought food once. As many other people have mentioned, we too do not like how the food does not remain fresh. Honestly, I've done research about budgeting and such in the past and making and packing your own food is almost the same cost as purchasing a fast food meal from outside the park. Ive eaten a few times in the park, and its not worth the price in terms of both quantity and quality. Maybe youll save a buck or two to tailgate and eat at your car, but really in my opinion Id rather eat a perfectly fresher meal and spend that extra buck or two. Not to mention the nice ambiance and feel of air conditioning in a restaurant.
Got rid of any good coupons this season. Thank you Six Flags. I already ranted about the damn coupon book to corporate. I was really steamed when I thumbed thru it.

on the last trip I looked into see how much we spend when we tailgate and for a lunch, dinner, and ride home. Food comes to $27 and this is for 5 people. Here is what we take 2 loafs of bread 2 bags of chips 12 apples 15 bottle of waters and 2 -3 pounds of lunch meat plus condiments and some cheese.
back before the dining pass usually i would just eat lunch at like 12 and head to the park and enjoy the rest of the day and just buy nachos or something to snack on. It worked out great but when you start having 4 or more people in your party than thats getting costly! Also a funnel cake sundae was only 10 bucks when i bought one this year? i never payed 14.99?

The way I am, I sort of feel like Great America is more a special day everytime I go. I can eat tv dinners, cereal, soup, hot dogs every other day. It's sort of like splurging when at Great America as compared to not. I still enjoy eating outside the park though whether it be Boston Market, KFC, Long John Silvers, Olive Garden, Avalon, Pizza Hut, Lone Star, Steak N Shake, Uno's, Taco Bell, Denny's, Mcdonald's, or Red Lobster. I miss the Arby's that used to be in Waukegan though. I really wish Sonic would come to Gurnee. I ate at the Subway one time, but I don't care for the place much because it's such a small location with a lot of people going there. The places "the walkers" from the park probably go the most are Burger King, Subway and maybe Mcdonald's. That's probably the reason I don't go Burger King much either - too packed.
A really big thing for me though is just getting away from all the people, heat, etc in the park. The thing is that my brother bought into this dining plan pass thing, and to me it doesn't really help in regards to time because he is waiting a long time to usually get his food, and the quality of the food is nothing out of the ordinary. So, a negative people might say for leaving the park is that it takes too much time, but I think eating in the park takes a lot of time too.
"I've been staring at the world, waiting. All the trouble and all the pain we're facing. Too much light to be livin' in the dark. Why waste time? We only got one life. Together we can be the CHANGE. So go and let your heart burn bright"
We usually buy the fixings for subs at Sams Club and make them the night before we are going to go. Bring other fixings like tomatoes pickles olives and cucumbers separately in tuperware this way the sandwhiches stay dry. And maybe bring salads or cole slaw from Aldi. Maybe cookies for dessert, and some sodas, we really try to do it on the cheap. And everthing is packed ino a cooler in our trunk along with our chairs. And we just go out and eat at our leisure. I just wish that we could eat in the park more often than we do, but honestly our food is beter. I will say that I absolutely refuse to eat outside of the pak come Fright Fest there are just to many friggin people to try and fight through.
