It's funny that the hype for this announcement took a week and it only runs backwards for a month... you'd think they'd at least run it backwards a little longer?
While it's a disappointment that it will only run for like a month and a half, how is it a waste of dollars? They posted it on FB which is absolutely FREE!!!!!! They didn't lose any money!!!!!!!

I think he meant the commercial on WGN. The commercial though is not just for American Eagle running backwards but also a contest for the 10th anniversary of WGN Kid's Fair.
Top 3 Steel Coasters: 1. The Incredible Hulk 2. Maverick 3. Dragon Challenge (Fireball)
Top 3 Wood Coasters: 1. The Beast 2. American Eagle (Red) 3. Hades
They are probably doing this for so little time because the track being ripped up, and I think more importantly, they don't want to staff both sides through Fright Fest. For a Friday on Fright Fest, they might only want to run one side in order to save money on staffing.

You need to get permission from Facebook to do promotions such as this, which may or may not cost money. Either way, a team of marketers came up with this idea, which is also a waste of time and money.

If they announce it as August-September that gives them an attendance boost now of people that want to ride it backwards and don't think they will get a chance during FF. It wouldn't surprise me if it gets extended after that since it's popular and FF is certainly busy enough.
What a horrendous waste of marketing dollars. A press release saves money, time, and doesn't piss people off.
Who does this piss off? I am confused. Anyone remember Last Blast in 2002 when the park was open in November and they put out a press release and didn't market it at all, and NO ONE was there (DejaVu had empty rows, thats how dead it was).
SPECULATION ALERT: Is it at all possible the only reason they are running American Eagle Blue backwards for a short period of time because of the possibility of there being construction taking place in the SWF/GAR area after September 17th?

It's really not that hard to see backlash if you actually leave this site, which is filled with only diehard fans. We know there's something more coming for next year. Fans on Facebook don't. This was hyped as a huge announcement by the park and it really isn't. People aren't happy with it. You could have easily had a press release and announce it on Facebook in one day, not have a viral marketing campaign behind it and still get the word out. Back in 2002, social media wasn't around, which is massive in getting the word out to the public. Now? It's not that hard to say: "Starting August 8th, American Eagle Blue will be racing backwards! Come check it out, it's only for a limited time!" That took me ten seconds, gets the word out, and doesn't get fans' hopes up that something new is coming. Doesn't mean you can't market it further, just don't do it this way when it bombed so miserably with Riptide Bay.
And it's only for this month-and-a-half because attendance will drop when school goes back into session, they want a draw.

Iron Wolf is right next to AE...I have a feeling they're putting a whole new area back there.
Xlight total rides: 50 times and in every row except front row left wing.

And once again, it costs the park zero dollars. WGN ran that story on their own accord.

No you don't. They could care less.

It would be sort of dumb to close down Iron Wolf Sept 5th, and than close down American Eagle also. That would be for Fright Fest to have 2 coasters shutdown. I don't think they would do that. If they want to do work by Great American Raceway, and SWF that doesn't really affect Eagle at all. That's a big area they could start doing work. If they wanted to get rid of Dare Devil Dive, I would imagine they would wait a little bit later after the season, but they could easily start the work with Dare Devil Dive and Eagle running.
^^^And Iron Wolf, and American Eagle aren't as close as you might think they are. Iron Wolf is next to the train station, than you have the funnel cake, than you have the bathrooms, and than do they have Johnny Rockets over there too? And in the back area next to American Eagle, they have a little storage thing going on. Take the train, and look left before American Eagle.

This was at the end of the announcement
If you liked guessing this announcement, just wait until later this fall...
I just looked at SFGAm's wall and 99% of the people who are complaining are kids, and the usual token "Cedar Point is better" person. A whopping 91 people, mostly kids under the age of 16, have posted on their wall regarding the announcement. You know how many people go to SFGAm in a day, on a normal summer day somewhere around 20-25 thousand and over 30 on a weekend. They even acknowledged that there will be another announcement this fall, so maybe the rugrats should learn to read.

I worked at the park that day ironically for a High School fundraiser. We cooked chicken at Aunt Martha's for almost literally NO ONE. This is fine and dandy in my opinion...lets the kiddies know about it without relying solely on word of mouth. For SURE you'll see an increase in ridership for the remainder of the season.

When I first read this I really liked the logic of it. It makes sense because Blue side is adjacent to it. However, I would expect Demon to be affected much more than Eagle as the Demon corkscrews are right next to the splash/raceway area while Eagle is across the service road. Also, I would expect Dare Devil Dive to be affected too if this were the case. I like your thinking though.

That is completely untrue. There are restrictions to what businesses can do on Facebook without consent from Zuckerburg Inc.

Regardless of the age and maturity level of the Facebook crew (which I agree is very low on both accounts), it's the park's main access to immediate feedback that isn't people in the park itself. It's foolhardy to say the park doesn't look at it.
Listen, I'm completely fine with announcing it on Facebook, it's actually the best outlet to announce it. But to do it like this, the same way they did the Riptide Bay announcement, was foolish. It backfired in a big way last year, to a lesser extent with this. Just post that the blue side is running backwards and you'll get more positive feedback. It's not that hard
I can understand what you are saying, but once again I think there is no backlash other than a small amount of younger people who thought they were announcing a new coaster which is a very small sampling of the overall picture. And considering the average age, a very small amount of the #1 most important thing (the spending pool). And Riptide Bay was not a failed announcement, just because a few people on facebook complain about something doesn't mean it failed. Ask anybody who works in finance for Six Flags, the big money maker for SFGAm during the summer is the water park and it was a much needed expansion that made the water park more accessable during the summer weekends. Plus if they cleared the land (SWF/GAR) and are announcing a coaster this fall they obviously already had a new coaster planned, so they were doing something they badly needed and adding a new coaster the next year.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner! Thanks for restoring my faith in enthusiasts. After saying I haven't ridden it backwards for 20 years, when I was a teen, on the other board, I got corrected that it ran from 2002-2006, as if I dreamed riding it backward for an entire season when I was 15.
The cool thing is, this time around I get to ride it with my three daughters!
