psychology. foot choppers and head choppers change a ride. if you've got a parking lot coaster and an identical themed coaster with objects in close reach during the ride, I guarantee the themed coaster will be viewed as a better ride by a majority.
Argh! You people! Theming may not change a ride, but it does change how much fun standing in line for an hour or more can be. in my opinion, if they removed the theming, it would be extremely detrimental to the ride... not neccisarily the physical ride itself, but the "experience" one gets from going on it.
Can you honestly say that you would enjoy Viper as much if the que was just a standard matal handrail job with no vegitation leading to a large nondescript cinderblock warehouse of a station, instead of an awesome que surrounded by desert plants, and going into the old factory? And look at what is consistantly the favorite section of the park (SWT)! Of course there are great rides, but themeing is what sets it apart from the rest more than anything else. And would the new additions to the park in the Marti Gras section be as impresive if there was no themeing, the rides were not getting painted, and there was simply pavement with no plant life or water? That wouldn't affect enjoyment of the rides, right? In fact, why paint any coaster? The paint doesn't make a better ride, by your logic! Can you say that Universal Studios or Disney would be as well loved as they are without their themeing?
Don't compare Disney or Universal to a Six Flags park when it comes to theming.
The first 2 parks specialize in this aspect to generate attendance as a destination park. Six Flags doesn't need to do this as they are regional parks.
Consider theming at an SF park as a plus, not a must.
While theming is nice, it's not really what most people expect when visiting Six Flags. They go for the thrills of the coasters, the shows, and other rides.
I finally retired the Sarah Palin signature because she is now 100% irrelevant.
