Sky Trek Closed...

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.
Postby [jonrev] on July 21st, 2006, 10:11 pm
Does anyone know why Sky Trek has been closed for the past week or so? It was closed last Monday and today it was still closed. They even have benches and garbage cans blocking the entrance.

Yeah, I noticed it was closed on Saturday. I didn't think it'd be closed for this long though. I hope it's not still closed on Tuesday, because I might wanna go on it.

It currently has a case of electrical gremlins and since parts haven't been made for 30 years they are no longer made. So a new solution is being devised.

^^^How do you know this? i dont know if this is the same thing your talking about but it had problems with the breaks and the rotation. Everytime it would go up and down it would shake. Maitenance didnt even know what was wrong wtih it. The last time it operated it didnt stop all the way down they had to load the guests off but the cabin was close to the ground that the guests just had to jump off the cabin to get to exit. It was only about an inch off the ground. It has nothing to do with the heat.

most of Sky Trek tower is standard Elevator Parts, I know the park contracted OTIS to recable the ride a few years back and not long before they did that they replaced quite alot of machinery atop the tower.

Rest is fairly standard off the shelf motors, tires, bearings, prox switches, and control equipment(probably AB).

Is that even considered jumping?

Well no its not considered jumping but I had to say it one way or the other. Im not going to consider what you said as a come back because it wasnt even close to one. And I asked you what your source was because maybe you just heard it from a random employee or actually have a resonable source.

He didn't say anything about heat problems. It was the persons post before him that said it was a guess that it might be heat. The person above you said electricity. That makes sense. It probably still could get parts from Intamin.

It may be 30 years old, but they still do make the Gyro towers. http://www.ridetrade.com/r_products_towers.htm
That ride looks like the same exact thing as Sky Trek Tower. It even has those turning things on the bottom of the cabin. Now, the case is whether or not they want to spend money to get more parts for the ride, or try to fix it on their own.

Could rust be a part of the problem too? I know that Astroworld lost their tower because the base rusted so badly it became unsafe. I have noticed some rust on the tower but I dont think its enough to be considered dangerous.

Just because they look the same doesn’t mean they are. Ownership and leadership at Intamin has changed over the years. Who knows they could’ve completely changed the system when new management came in and scraped the old idea... I don’t think they want to change the whole system for one part when they could possibly find someone who makes or could make that part....

I know who said what.

I think that they are just going to order parts from the company because they didnt really know what was wrong with it in order to fix it themselves. Noone really notices that the ride has been closed down for a while since its unpopular. Its been closed since the beginnig of last week, or the week before sorry if im wrong. If it was a huge attraction such as Batman then it would of been fixed at a much faster pace.

I personally think Sky Trek is a popular attraction. Whenever I'm there and its open the cabin gets filled.....and theres a line still waiting for the next rides. So I think its more popular then you say.

Trailblazer wasn't open the other day. Does anyone know what's wrong with that ride since we are talking about broken rides? Yankee Clipper was another one.

This year Sky Trek Tower never has had more than a wait for it to come down and load. It's not that popular. It also takes a lot od people.

Well when I was going on it with my 2 friends, they said something about it not being that great with the wind conditions, or something like that. I am guessing the ride is old, and needs repairs, and it can't even stay up and the top with some conditions I guess.

and no I am not kiding.

Good Ragingbullfan you sure got me good  Yes the ride is having problems because its old but thats not the major case. The major problem is because of the breaks, they suck. If you rode it a week or less before it was closed you would notice that the cabin would shake on its way up and down the tower. When they called maintenance to check the problem they tried seeing what was wrong with it. They had to go up the tower, and check to see what was the problem. Yet, they didnt know what was wrong with it. Im pretty sure it will open again soon, at least before the end of the season.

One time the high water alarm went off during a cycle. This means that there is to much water inside the tower. There are three pumps to suck water outside of the tower, but two were broken and only one was working. The cabin didnt even reach half way up adn the alarm went off so they had to bring it down. This isnt why its broken I just thought I'd mention it because it was rather intersting.

Up til now I was hoping one day SFGAm would tear it out and put in a Huss SkyTower (look spiffy), but with the recent demise of Huss, I dont see it happening. (if i had to guess, Tripple Play wont return due to this fact either)

Since Huss is bankrupt, this means that Six Flags will have to find more thrilling, thrill rides!! Yeah, if this is true. :D Darn it. There's still Zamperla. The Power Surge is great though.

The parent company may have gone bankrupt but the Parts division is still very much alive. We recieve packages from them daily, wrapped in HUSS tape.
