Sports bottle question

I never usually buy the sports bottles, but somebody just gave me one, which is making me look at the ones other people have a little closer. What I notice is that a LOT of people walk around with sports bottles from previous years and I was just wondering if anybody had any idea why. They won't refill an older bottle, will they?

Or am I just over thinking this and they're just using them like water bottles?

I think they do that so people don't accidentally take their bottles from a ride cubby.

I thought I heard that they can only fill the older sport bottles with water.

I do believe they can only be filled with water. I haven't seen any older ones being filled with anything else. I had mine swiped for the first time ever. This is probably because of the unlimited season / green bottles. Unlike before it wouldn't do people as good because they would still have to pay after stealing the actual bottle. Anyways, I wrap mine in cloth and cover it with stickers, haven't had a problem since.
