Whizzer Question

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.

I was looking at some old photos of Whizzer from the Marriott era and I noticed the track looked lighter and the supports were a grey/white color. What were the original colors of the ride and when was it repainted to what it is now?

Looks like it was always the same color. Perhaps the photo you saw was bad lighting?

^I thought about that. Quality in the late 70's wasn't exactly top notch. Maybe a reflection from the sun made it look white.

^ Supports, ours are primarily columns while the California ride was all beams.

As for the paint job, both Whizzers were originally white (ish). I don't know exactly when they were repainted, but I would guess 1980. I know ours was painted by 1981. I suspect Santa Clara may have been painted earlier.

It was a light grey (with a hint of blue) color. The year Eagle opened (1981) Whizzer was painted the dark green that we know today. That year was my first ride on Whizzer, and I remember that it was the light color the year before (the year Demon opened). I was following the coasters closely, even though I hadn't ridden them all yet (coaster nerd in the making).

They also regularly ran 4 or 5 trains back then; no air gates, no seat belts. Just "get in and it goes." Good times.

Here is a good picture with the original color: http://www.greatamericaparks.com/images ... play_media
