Hey everyone, this is my first post in the forum, so hopefully this subject hasn't been touched yet.
"What if" back in 2002 the Whizzer was actually removed for S:UF, and Shockwave stood, still standing tall at the front of the park. Does anyone think Shockwave would still be standing today? If not, what do you hypothetically think would be there now?
Interesting question. I believe Shockwave was ultimately removed instead of Whizzer because of maintenance issues including a busted wheel incident in its final year if I remember correctly. Maybe the public outcry to save Whizzer helped too. Are you saying if Shockwave never had those issues, would it still be standing today?
If so, I still don't believe it would be. GASM was taken down a few years back so I think Shockwave would've been removed as well in favor of a newer coaster sometime between the years of 2004 to 2011.
Quick question while we are on this subject: From what I've heard, GASM lost a lot of popularity in its final seasons at SFGAdv. Did Shockwave begin to lose popularity in its final few seasons or was it still one of the more popular rides in the park? I'm a bit too young to remember how busy it was. I realize that Shockwave was only about 14 years old when it left and GASM was about 22 years old so the latter probably dropped more in popularity because of age.
P.S. Welcome to the boards!

This has been discussed but Im kewl with this one coming up again. Basically Shockwave probably wasnt gona last much longer anyways. It was having major maintenance issues falling apart cracking and we are lucky the incident happened without riders on it. Im a fan of Whizzer and Im glad it is still around especially sense we probably would have lost Shockwave anyways. Whizzer will probably be removed at some point but I think it still has quite a few good years left in it. Demon on the other had I expect out sometime within the 20 teens.
I would say SUF would have gone where Whizzer is and Shockwaves spot would most likely have been occupied by either Chang (yeah I went there), a floorless multi looper (medsusa) or a multi dimension coaster (X and X2). Its possible we could have gotten a fuly launched circuit coaster alla Maverick but it would have been doubtful. I also couldn't se a LIM because of V2.
I suspect that if Whizzer had been removed, we would have gotten a new family-friendly coaster of some kind. It currently is one of the few coasters in the park that almost anybody can go on, and while that's not as exciting as predictions of launched rides or big B&Ms, it's still a niche that I can't imagine the park would have ignored for long.
