Coasters after dark

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.

I've never been to this event before because I herd it was crowded. But I'm thinking about going this year with some friends and I have a few questions.

Now if you have gone last year or the year before, can you please tell me how the crowds were. And simply is it fun or just a waste of time?

And also, how do you think the crowds will be this year?

The crowds feel like they would during a regular day, but it's night time. You know how usually when night time comes, and the crowds start diminishing. Well, it doesn't feel like that for a Coasters After Dark. It feels like 1pm crowds during the day, but it's night time. Yes, you can still have fun for a Coasters After Dark event, but if you think all the people at night are going to rush home, than you would be wrong on that for this type of night. All the flats are closed except maybe 1 or 2 (Giant Drop, King Chaos maybe are open), no shows going on, and of course the waterpark is closed. People purposely pile in the park for night time on a Coasters After Dark event. It's sort of like a privilege. I have a season pass, and this is a perk for me, so I should go. The thing is that 1/3 of attendance are season pass holders.

So, yes if you aren't thinking hey the park is going to get empty because it's night, than you should have a good time. To me, it's nothing special. One of my favorite times in the regular park is night time, and part of that reason is because people leave, and rides are emptier. I think a way that the park could make the park feel less empty during this event is to actually have all the flats running / not the water rides though. Than, the lines wouldn't be so long. And the reason they do that is to save money, and I get that. Have 15-16 rides open compared to somewhere around 30.

I tried coasters "at night" at Mt. Olympus last year and that was my first and last time doing that.

I'm glad I have my ACE membership. I can go to events and have comfortable ERT (Exclusive Ride Time) with a bunch of other coaster geeks like myself.

Do you get ERT regularly from ACE membership?

I ask because now that my son is as addicted to rollercoasters as I am, it might be worth it.

ACE has events all year long. If you pay to go to an event, it comes with ERT.

One of my favorite events every years (cept this one!) is HoliwoodNights at Holiday World. You don't have to be an ACE member to go, but you have to be a member of *a* coaster group (they have a list of them). That is one of the best events every years. HOURS of ERT. Even I have had to take brakes after riding those coasters...

The events usually also come with admission to the park, some meals, any convention-style reception thingys... it's good times :)

My advice is to avoid coasters after dark events. Crowds during the day before the event are worse than normal and never really thin out.
