Six Flags Great America: Memorial Day

Let us know how your day at the park was.
Postby sixflagsdude on June 1st, 2004, 12:35 am
I got up at around 10:30-11 but wanted to sleep in more! But I got up anyway because otherwise I woulda slept in till the day was over. Finally left for the park at around 1pm. The traffic in Milwaukee was AWFUL!!!! as usual. Milwaukee traffic is even worse than Chicago traffic because there are a bunch of idiots driving in this city. Anyway, it took almost an hour just to get out of Milw. Luckily the rest of the drive went quick. The weather alternated between sunny and stormy the whole way down.

I got to the park at around 2 and it musta just got hit by a nasty storm because the entire parking lot was flooded. I went through one puddle that splashed over my entire car! I couldn't see for a second, lol. I parked in Lot 25, not bad considering the parking lot was PACKED!

I decided that the first thing I wanted to do was take some video footage since my parents let me borrow their camcorder. I made my way around the parking lot from the outside to tape some of the coasters that you could see better from the lot. I taped Superman, Viper, The American Eagle and was gonna tape Raging Bull but it wasn't running.

I got to the entrance and the employee taking guest surveys with his palm pilot stopped me again to interview me!! This was the third time, by the exact same employee.

I video taped the Carousel and the pond in front, then I pretty much taped all the coasters and flat rides. I finished off the video while riding the train. While taping, I noticed that ALL the lines were soooo long and crowded. Then I got my hand stamped and brought the camera back out to my car and put it in the trunk. I was so nervous doing that, because it's not my camera and it's expensive. I ate some snacks I brought while sitting in my car because I had a headache and my feet hurt. I was wearing a stupid pair of $70 sandals that were killing my feet and uncomfortable, plus they were wet and wrecked from the rainstorms that were on and off the whole time. I also saw Viper get stuck on the lifthill, lol. I almost fell asleep in the car because I was so tired from videotaping! I half wanted to just go home because of the weather but that would be stupid to do without riding anything. I finally decided to get out of my car and go on some rides. It was 4pm by this time.

The first thing I headed to was Ragin Cajun. I waited a good hour and a half for this one. Waiting in line for this when it starts getting hot is gonna suck because there is no shade in the queue. Even though the ride ops were really efficient, the ride capacity is low because they can only run a few cars at once and each one only seats 4 people. It was fun to watch people's reaction on this one though while I waited in line. I got on the Magenta car and sat with a few other people. The front of the cars are so cute and have alligators on them. The entrance for the ride is a big brick hotel or something like that. You have one lap seatbelt and then pull a bar down over you. We went around one short turnaround and then onto the lift hill. Once you are at the top, you go back and forth on the curved track and they play these funny sound effects. There is no banking on the turns and you slam really hard from side to side (I saw a lot of people coming off this rubbing their elbows, so I made sure not to bang mine). You go faster and faster as the turns get tighter and by the end you are all over the car. Then you suddenly go down a drop and then up another one. It makes this awful loud sound as the track catches it. It almost looks like you won't make it up the other side. Then you go around another turn and then down a HUGE drop. I think this is where they put the on ride camera but I am not sure. Then the next element is really cool: you go up a hill level out and then quickly up another one!! It is amazing how much force it takes to go on a double dip, upwards! I have tried this many times in Roller Coaster Tycoon, but can never get the coaster train to catch. The last part is the most insane..........after one more turnaround, the car spins wickedly on its own (like on the Tilt-A-Whirl) you spin so fast that you can barely see, you do this through another set of back and forth track and then literally SLAM around some more turns, then go on a double dip towards the end. This was a really fun ride and I am glad the park got it.

I looked at the other rides in the new Mardi Gras section and was surprised that they haven't even opened King Chaos yet. How hard is it to get this ride running??? I also watched the Big Easy Balloons running and then Jester's Wild Ride (this ride is a neat concept but goes too slow, I hope they plan on speeding it up later).

Next, I headed to my favorite coaster, Batman: The Ride. I rode this 3 times. Once in row 5, once in the front row and once in the back row. There was NO LINE for this one, even though the park was crowded, cool!

Then I went on Vertical Velocity. Only a 10 min wait and I sat in row 3. It seemed like people were leaving for the day which was cool.

Next, I went on Iron Wolf. Once again, I walked right on! Sat in row 2 and it was a fun ride but still too much headbanging after the corskrew.

Then I went on the Revolution. This one had a pretty long line but I was on in only 2 ride cycles. The second part seemed so much tamer than usual. Mabey because I have been on it so many times already.

Then I went on Fiddler's Fling. This one is a neat ride and a childhood fave, but it hurts too much when you get smooshed to the side.

Next, it was on to the American Eagle. The first time I went on the Backwards Blue side. There was no line at all. This was fun as always. Then I went on the Forwards Red side, which was finally running today. It took forever because someone puked on the ride and they had to run it through a few times to clean and dry it up. I like the red side better because of the last set of hills. But the screeching of the rails was so bad on this side that I actually had to plug my ears.

Then I went on the Demon. There was no line for this either. I sat in the back row and went on this 2 times in a row without even having to get out of my seat.

I was gonna go on Deja Vu next but I saw the line and went No Way!! The line went on forever and the switchbacks were half full. So that's where everyone was.

Then I went to Raging Bull because I saw that it was running. It was broken down all day and they even had a sign in front that said that it wouldn't be running. Anyway. This line was pretty long also. The second set of switchbacks were full and they were running only 2 trains. I waited over 30 mins for this one. But it was fun once I got on.

Next, I went on Giant Drop, only waited about 10 mins for this. I really felt that drop in my stomach today!! It broke down shortly after I went on it because the magnetic car lifts got stuck somewhere near the top.

Then it was off to the Viper. NO LINE!!! w00t! I got on right away and had so much fun on this as always.

I was gonna go home at that point but figured I would hit a couple more rides and then leave.

The next coaster I went on was Superman. I sat in the back row as always because you get the most g-forces there. No line on this one either!

Next, I went on the Condor.

Finished the night off on Deja Vu. I only waited 10 mins for this one. Too much headbanging on the batwing but the rest of it was really fun. I still can't believe how dizzy you get when you stop on the second tower!

I was worried about all the traffic when I left the park because the lot was still pretty full but I got out pretty quick!

How could the line only be 30 minutes long? Usually when the second switchbacks are full, the line is close to an hour(while running 3 trains).

Also, good description of Ragin' Cajun.

I was wondering the same thing! I think that mabey because the Fastlane Line had no one in it might have made the difference. I have seen days where the F-Lane line delays the normal line up to 30 mins.
