Six Flags Great America Trip-Fright Fest 10/19/03(long post)

Let us know how your day at the park was.
Postby sixflagsdude on October 20th, 2003, 1:54 am
Today the park was still packed but it turned out to be an AWESOME day! I didn't go on Deja Vu or V2(I have ridden these tons of times this season-and V2 was broken down most of the day). They are decent rides but the novelty of them is wearing off, I enjoy the classic ones more, specially when the wait for the newer ones is over an couple of hours. The traffic was awesome and there were no traffic jams initially, until I finally got to the Grand Ave exit to Six Flags. The line was going ALL THE WAY to the freeway, both northbound and southbound traffic. It took almost an hour just to get into the park. Once, I finally got into the parking lot, I parked in Lot 41 and made the long trip to the park. Even though this lot was farther away, I still prefer it to parking in the back lot.Once, I got to the entrance, There were about 12 lines going out to the parking lot. They were LONG!!! Luckily, these were only to buy tickets. I went right to the season pass lane and was in the park in a matter of seconds, yay!The first ride I wanted to check out was Elvira's: Superstition(formerly Space Shuttle America). This was supposed to be an amazing attraction. It is basically a motion simulator movie theater where your seats move to a movie screen. IT was amazing!! I got on RIGHT AWAY, there was no line and I went on it twice in a row!You start off going through the normal shuttle queue where all the original theming is. Except, this time, all the people in the communications center were skeletons and had those joke Halloweek names associated with them. Then you go into the prieview area(normally where you get flight instructions for the Space Shuttle America version) . This is the COOLEST prieview film I have ever seen before a ride. This time you get to see this awesome video of Elvira and some of her monster buddies talking about her new theme park, Tragic Kingdom. She does her normal witty introduction where she jokes about her big boobs(she said "I wanna keep you abreast of what is going on", hahah) and slapstick comments(which I love). She talks about all the different rides like "Hypothermia" and some other ones, then finally gets to Superstition, the king of the park. Oh, she also talks about the food..Rotten Candy, lady fingers, blah blah. Anyway, so she shows a scaled down model of the ride and talks about it. Then she cues Frankenstien about the upcoming storm and to open up the roof of the castle. So then they put a metal collander on her head and then the lightning strikes her head and she starts shaking and stuff. Then she is inside a TV screen, zaps it again and then the audience is surrounded and pulled into the TV. Then the doors open to go into the ride.Once you are in the ride, the lap bars come down and the room goes dark right away(after the seats hiss and move around to test them). Lighning strikes and you see a carousel horse and some other junk. Finally you see a Maus style coaster seat going into the funhouse. You follow in shortly after. Elvira is in the car in front of you and she talks about the ride. The funny thing before you start is she goes "I am in car #12, so that must mean...you are in seat 13!" all dramatic and then she disappears through another door(but keeps reappearing in front of you during the ride). Your car hits a swinging door and then it opens. Your car goes up a small lift but then accidentally rolls back down(prolly because there are no dog-chains on it). Then you go up, over and down a small hill and sharply bank right and over a fire pit. Elvira's car is on fire and I guess yours is too. after some more turns and dips you suddenly go down this HUGE drop that you fall down on forever. Towards the bottom you notice that the track is not finished and broken. You fly off the last part of it like a ramp and go through this huge ghost image of Elvira and land back on another track with a huge thud. Then you go down a huge spiral helix where you are surrounded by constellations in space. After another door, you finish the helix in a huge cathedral(still high up) and there is wicked organ pipe music playing in the background. Then you crash through a stained glass window and roughly go down another helix into a dark room. From that point, there is another incline, that is powered by windmill shaped LIMS, it launches you high up fast and hard and you go through more elements. At that point, Elvira's car is knocked off the track and you go through a jungle area where you are chased by a huge snake under the track. The snake slithers around and the head lunges at your car, barely missing. After going through more drops turns and other stuff you hit a bunch of heavy doors, shake hard and then meet up with Elvira again. She talks about how you survived the ride and that you should "knock on wood". Then she goes "but it isn't over yet". Red lights flash in the theatre and you are launched through a bunch of more elements. Then you are outside the castle and coasting over a moat, or lake and after going up a small hill, cards from a deck start flying at you until you reach the top. Then you fly through a whole deck of cards fast to the point where everything flickers. Then you hit the end of the ride. I am a huge Elvira fan and I was so amazed by this ride(as you can see by how long this description was)Here is a good website with screenshots and a general description of the ride: http://www.brainzoostudios.com/projects ... ------Then I walked past the Hometown Fun Machine(scrambler) and saw that there was no line. This was cool, I got on 3 rides right away even though the park was filled to capacity. When I was on the ride, I noticed the tweety bird cages from the ride(Skywhirl?) were still there behind the ride. There were monsters or something in them, so it was probably for theming. cool.Next, I went on the Demon. There was only a 10 min wait for this. I noticed the train tunnel was full of steam and strobelights. Dang, they really pimped this park out for Frightfest! After that, I decided to go on The Hellevator(Giant Drop). This was about a 30 min wait, still not too bad. They rethemed this entire ride for Halloween, including steam and sound effects. The ride starts out playing dance music and as it is about to start, they play creepy stuff like an airplane taking off, screaming sounds, a heartrate machine flatlining and other stuff. Once the cars get close to the top, they make loud creaking noises as if they are about to break, then you plunge 200ft to the bottom. I have been on this a million times, but with all the changes, it felt like a new ride! Then I headed to Tornado Twister(Chubasco). This is one of those tea cup rides where you spin and puke. They completely blacked out all the walls, have a smoke making machine inside of it, put zombies and coffins up, have a strobe light going, a disco ball in the middle and finally have techo music playing(some of the songs I remember were Insomnia and Sandstorm by Darude). It took awhile to get on but once I got on it was awesome, I had that sucker spinning so fast(the strobes made it feel even faster) that I actually had to wait for a second once I got off since I was so dizzy. I wish I knew the song that they were playing when I was on it, because it was cool and I never heard it before.I noticed Raging Bull was open then(it had been closed for a good hour before) so I got in line. I only waited about 45 mins. I rode the teal train in the back. The normally annoying music they played in the queue line was replaced by errie SW music. Um, ok. I also noticed that they had a maintenance cart towards the bottom of the first lift hill with cables going all the way to the top. I wonder what that was all about. Then I went on The Viper. The queue line streched wayyyy into the midway, I have never seen it that long before. Amazingly, it only took me 30 mins to get on the coaster. I noticed for the first time that the Snake on the Viper logo had bloody bones in its mouth(or mabey it was a Frightfest thing). The wicked thing about this coaster is how it banks downhill at a low angle only to pop you up a hill and shoot you down a steep hill many times during the ride...cool element!Next, I went on the American Eagle. The first time on the Red Forwards side, and the second time on the Blue Backwards side. Both rides were only about a 20 min wait. My timing ruled today! They left the trim brakes enabled on the mid-couse helix for both sides this year(unlike last year) I was sooo bummed about that, it made for a more insane ride! While in line, a bunch of us saw a headless horseman character walk by, dude, it was creepy! and while in the tent queue saw Velma(from Scooby Doo) being chased by a zombie. Then I went on Iron Werewolf(Iron Wolf). This took wayyy over an hour for an old stand up coaster(that I hated at one point). Eventually, I got on and it was ok, but not worth that long of a wait. The line queue is unbearable because the corrals are too close together and squished. The highlight was that there was a huge werewolf hanging from the ride station with blood coming out of his mouth, yay.Next, I went to Batman, I thought for sure that the line would be huge and take forever, but it was bearable. It was only about an hour. They played one of my fave songs in the station(The Passenger-Michael Hutchens-from the Batman Forever soundtrack). The chick next to me got pissed at some people she was riding with because she was totally dizzy from the ride when it was over.I was gonna go on Superman for my final ride of the night, but saw that the line queue was not only packed to capacity, but extended through the entire midway till past the bumper cars, um dude...no thanks! So I decided to make one more clockwise trip around the park and leave it at that. I noticed that they renamed New Orleans-Nightmare on Burbon Street and Yankee Harbor-Horror Harbor.I decided to go on the American Eagle again because the line was short and they redid the lighting at night(it was dark out by this time). The entire ride(normally a white coaster) was lit up in red and it looked so sureal! I went on the Blue Backwards side again, and this ride was amazing not only at night, but in a completely different color!I wanted to go on the Demon and then go home. So I got in line for it and it was a good 30 mins. There were some problems with the restraints so that delayed us a bit more, but not too much. I love this coaster at night, because there are no lights on it and you have no clue where you are going(although I already know since I have been on it more times than days that I have been alive)As I was exiting the park, the promotional item they were giving away were packs of the new Juicy Fruit™ gum again. Except it was Strappleberry this time, which was MUCH better than that grapemelon stuff they gave away last week.
