Closing Day 2008 TR

Let us know how your day at the park was.
Postby BroadwayBaby on November 5th, 2008, 6:48 pm
So, Sunday was a beautiful day, the crowds weren't as awful as I anticipated (woo!) and I had a nice time at my very first Fright Fest!!!

I went with my friend Kat and her sister Kayllan (who had never been to the park before). We started out with Triple Play and waited about 10 minutes. But when I ran to get in my seat some kids ran in front of me and took them before I could get to any. I was mad but the ride op was very apologetic about it all which was nice :-)

Whizzer was next, we waited about 15-20 minutes. I sat in the very back with my friend (Kat). Then we hopped on over to Demon and waited 15 minutes for the middle. Then, it was off to Viper.

Viper took us about a half-hour through the line, we sat nearer to the back. Then I realized our problem on all the two-seater rides - I wanted to get the very back but it was hard because I wanted to be on the same train as Kay since it was her first time, but didn't want to push her to do something scarier (plus, there's three of us anyway). Argghhh. Still, Viper was great and we looked hilarious in our pic.

Kat did NOT want to go on Raging Bull so soon (it was her first time, since as you all know, Bull was closed on opening day) so we opted for Eagle. First, though, our stomachs were rumbling so we got cheese bread for lunch...YUM. I love that stuff. After we ate, Kat and I sang "Scare-oke" and did "Friends in low places" then I did "Somewhere over the rainbow" by myself. I love the karaoke, but I wish they would put songs I like to sing (broadway and opera) in the book. Le sigh.

Anyway...we hopped into AE's line and waited about 15 minutes for second-to-back. Oh my word, the farther back the better, I tell you!!! It was fantastic!!!! I love that ride to death!

Then, I decided it was time to challenge the Raging Bull. We waited about 35-40 minutes for that. Kat was TERRIFIED. She kept saying over and over "I don't want to challenge the Raging Bull." I was getting aggravated, but I knew EXACTLY what would happen...and it did, of course. You know, the typical crying-on-the-lift-and-two-minutes-later-it's-your-favorite-ride-ever-and-you-want-to-ride-it-over-and-over-again. :-P

We bought our picture and then headed towards Batman/V2 to check out the lines. They were an hour and a half...eh, not worth it. We decided Eagle would be shorter and more fun anyway. So, we did and rode..in the back. Oh my GOODNESS. Kat and I were completely HOARSE by the time the ride was over. It was AWESOME!!!

Too bad, we wanted to stay (even though the scare-actors were creeping us out) but it was a school night. So, we played a game and went on Orbit, and left.

It was a great day and I'm going to deeply miss the park. Such good times I have there in the summer...waiting for the '09 season with LOTS of anticipation.

Raging Bull was by FAR the best decision the park ever made.

I can name a few terrible decisions too and no, I'm not referring to TDK or Wiggle's World.

I know the worst one by far...

The removal of Sky Whirl. Worst idea ever.

They had no choice. It was a hot mess in the end to maintain and lots of $$ was needed. Pointless to keep chugging away at the budget for such an old ride. Look at SWF.

Thinking about Sky Whirl mme cry. I just sat by Demon on Saturday and Sunday and stared at the constuction site of what it use to be. Hay bayler, SkyWhirl, Deja Vu, now piles and holesof dirt.

Yes the removal of the Sky Whirl was the worst idea the park had ever made. If they were to take care of the rides, the rides would be in better shape.

Yup. The coaster gods put an omen on that spot. How many years you give Buccaneer Battle?

Wow...while not all parks have the greatest maintenance team in the world, I'd say that Great America's is close to the top.

Extensive rehab is done at the park. Like everything, machines get old and parts get hard to come by. Take example the Whizzer. Currently, the park has to fabricate any parts for it when a major malfunction occurs because no one makes them anymore. The same can be said for STT when it malfunctioned between '06-'07.

Secondly, the amount of money you put into something to fix has to be less than the actual value of the machine, which, stated numerous times around this site, is why they got rid of "inoperable/maintenance nightmare" rides. It's like a car...after so long, the cost to repair parts exceeds the actual value of the car, so you decide to stop sticking money into it and go a different route (sans SF Inc.).

^Good idea. Never rode sky whirl, and I would like to. They should just remake the ride. I always wanted to ride it.

Oh, and about BB, I bet after 2 years a kid drowns or something and they have to shut down the ride.
LETS GET AN S&S SLINGSHOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edit: ^^ or some top of the line flats.

Honestly, I think in about 3-5 years Buccaneer Battle will still be around but will be another one of those rides with a 10-15 minute wait. I can't see it as a good long-term investment. I think the park should pick and choose rides that never seem to get old like King Chaos, Revolution, DareDevil Dive, Raging Bull, etc. Rides/Areas/Attractions that turn stale(but still sometimes have LONG lines) after the initial opening season are Dark Knight, Superman, Space Shuttle America, Looney Tunes National Park, etc. Think LONG-TERM. Some rides never got out of style. Others are good only when you realize they have no line and you don't want to leave yet.
