Okay, before you all get snappy, I just wanted to tell what I heard.. I work at a local restaurant in Champaign. Today, one of our regular customers (a judge at the urbana courthouse) mentioned that she heard a rumor earlier today. She heard that sometime in the near future, Six Flags was planning to build a new park on Olympian Drive in Champaign (By Beverly Cinemas/Meijer/Old Navy, etc). Apparently, Champaign-Urbana has been looking to expand the city and turn it into more of a commercialized and urbanized city, and this is one of their methods of doing so. Now, as soon as I heard this, I immediately didn't believe it, just because we've got Great America and SFStL, and they're only about 400 miles from eachother. It seems highly unlikely that they would build another park in between the two. If they wanted to invest that much money, I would think they would rather just work on improving SFStL, don't you think? But then I kept thinking about it; and as impossible as it seems, it might have an extremely small chance of being remotely true. In the past few years, we have noticed that Champaign-Urbana keeps getting all sorts of new businesses and things..so it would make sense that they are trying to urbanize the city. What are your thoughts? Has anyone else heard anything about this?
-p.s.- YES, I know that this is just a random rumor, and it's most likely false..I just wanted to see if anyone else had heard the rumor or anything. Plus, considering that I heard it from a Judge--that gave the rumor a little bit of credibility.
I would'nt hold your breath on it. It would make no sense what-so-ever, for SFI to build a park in Champaign. For one, SFI is in debt, and to build a brand spanking new park from scratch, would not help their financial problems. GA has Chicago, and Milwaukee to drain its peeps from, and SFStl has St. Louis and its suburbs to drain theirs from. Champaign-Urbana has really, ummm, not much of a major city to draw from (unless you count Springfield). Chicago is 2 hrs away, and St. Louis is around 3 hrs away, and I really don't think that Champaign and the towns around it, would be able to draw enough people to the park to even come close to making a profit. IF, and i mean IF, SFI did build a park in Champaign, you as might as well but a fork in the company, because it would be one of the worse decisions that the company has ever made.
Not bashing you either, but there are two main reasons why this will probably never happen:
1.Champaign is a very small city to build a park from scratch. Six Flags has parks close to the city in two different directions as well.
2.The other big fact here is that Six Flags is a company that right now is selling parks, not buying or building them. The money from the company just isn't there.

Right now, your best chance of getting anything down there amusement wise would be a small scale waterpark or possibly some businessman has this crazy thought of opening a small carnival like amusement park in the Champaign area.
You will never see the likes of the major players (SF, CF, Paramount, etc.) even remotely interested in constructing a park there.
I finally retired the Sarah Palin signature because she is now 100% irrelevant.
I really cant see a Six Flags park going there, since there arent many people that the park would serve as SFGAm and SFStL serve. It just wouldnt be reasonable to put one there.
Universal Orlando Mechanical Engineer Marathon down, Goofy to go.
I do not believe that SF would put 3 parks so close to each other. Thay also are selling, not buying parks and haven't built one up from scatch in a long time (not quite sure when). It's certianaly a slight possibility, but it wouldn't be very big I don't think, and it wouldn't have much appeal. it'd be stupid to put one there, but SF has also put up 3 Djea Vu's

Yeah, actually we are getting a waterpark next year-ish. Scholem Pool is being completely torn down and turned into a waterpark.
Yeah, I wish this would happen, as I'm only about an hour from Champaign. It wouldn't be too bad of an idea. I know they are broke and all. They would have Decatur, Champaign, Bloomington, Peoria, Springfield, and all the little towns here in Central Illinois. I know this won't happen, but I have always wanted an amusement park in Central Illinois. I would sooo apply for a job there too!
SF just made a huge mistake with the whole SFO/SFWoA purchase and they aren't doing the greatest with the KK problems. They are in a rocky situation, I say if they are/were thinking about it, it gets moved to the back burner. It seems highly unrealistic.

Springfield a major city? That's a good one.
As for the rumor of a Six Flags in Champaign.. thats just life in central IL.
There isn't much to do except come up with strange and crazy rumors to make your town seem bigger than it is.
This rumor has been around for a long time 10-15 years easy. It always has a variation to it, but usually it centers around an area of fast development ( strip malls, commercial land, etc.) I've heard the same rumor for the Peoria / Bloomington area and Springfield as well. Heck at one point there was a rumor in Springfield of SFI buying our local waterpark / go kart track and converting it to a Six Flags.
It's the most fun in the park when your laughing in the dark.
That'd be awesome if they changed Knights Action Park to SF!! They already have a ferris wheel! But yeah, it won't happen, but I sure wish it did. Champaign has U of I and tons of students go there. If only one of these rumors would come true...
You know, this seems like a good topic for a song.
Its never going to happen!
La de da da
Its just a wild rummmmmoooor!
La de da da
So lets all get together and say.....
ITS JUST A RUMOR THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEEEEEEEEEN!
Yeah, its a little corny and probably crap but whatever.
This is where I would usually put stuff. Can't think of anything right now... =/

The area could easily support a smale scale park that is privately owned. Throw a few flats up, a small scale coaster, some kiddie rides, arcade, restaurant, and maybe a train ride.
But to expect a major amusement park basically thrown into a cornfield is stretching it beyond imagination.

^ Haha! You got it. An amusment park in a corn field! I bet that if they got some good coasters (B&M and Intamin Rocket), then people would travel a few hours to get here. It would be something new for people south of Chicago that could travel down here. Maybe some coaster enthusiasts would stop by from Sfstl on their way to Sfgam! Haha. I'm dreaming too much!
University of Illinois is down there. I don't know what town that's in (Champaign or Urbana) but that could possilby support a small market in the fall and spring months. But as has been stated above, there isn't enough people to market a full scale amusement park there. Six Flags caters to urban areas where there are a lot of people in a small area.

The campus crosses the border between the two cities.
