here ya go, straight from the six flags website.....

Six Flags' unique form of entertainment was born in the imagination of Texas oil barren Angus Wynne, the father of the modern-day theme park. Mr. Wynne set out to create a destination that would capture the excitement and wonder of the imagination. With Angus' vision and the support of the Texas community, Six Flags Over Texas opened in 1961.

The first Six Flags park took its name from the six countries whose flags had flown over Texas throughout the state's extraordinary history.
Six Flags Over Texas featured six sections reflecting the spirited cultures of those nations -- and offered guests a vibrant experience straight out of their dreams.

Mr. Wynne envisioned theme parks of a grand scale -- bigger than Disneyland -- located in different regions across the country, making them convenient and affordable to families everywhere. Today, Six Flags has made his dream a reality. Six Flags' fun, family environments comprise innovative rides and exciting attractions including live shows, cutting-edge thrill rides, games, kid friendly play areas, land animals, marine mammals, concerts, and special events.

The first three parks that Wynne built followed the "Six Flags" tradition. That is, their geographical location had been a territory of six different countries. The locations in Georgia and Missouri had changed hands between different countries six times as well, so those locations were a perfect fit.

After Penn Central Railroad (which is no more) bought the company, the parks that were aquired after the sale had little to do with the tradition that the original properties started. "Six Flags" had been relegated to a trade name, and nothing more. It carried no more historical significance.

To most, the Six Flags at Great America will be the six large American flags that fly on the hill. Most of the public does not know where the name came from. For that matter, most of the public has always known the park as "Six Flags Great America", being that the Marriott Corporation owned the park for only 8 of its 30 years of operation.
