S&S Towers

Talk about anything that has to do with the amusement park industry here.

Something I've always wondered. Why on the detonator model does the tubing only go half way up the tower with on cables attached at the top. If you look at Adventureland model space shot the tubing goes all the way up the tower and cables are connected at the top and bottom.

Wasn't Detonator one of the first, if not the first S&S shot/drop towers? If so, that may be the reason.

Do the car launch up as high on Detonator as they do on other S&S towers?

Yeah, it's just the age. The first ones called Mark I towers, also referred to as good space shots have just the cable on top of the gondola and it launches the car above the top of the cylinders giving a great pop of airtime and a few feet of true freefall before the cables catch the car again.

The Mark II have a full loop of cable and the cylinders that span the tower top to bottom, generally they're nowhere near as good as the older Mark I's, though some of the older ones are no longer being run quite right, I guess they've messed with Big Shot on Stratosphere but can't confirm, the one on I Drive in Orlando which is the relocated prototype, last time I rode it was running very poorly, then the cedar fair ones are hit n' miss.

They are for the most part very in-expensive compared to most amusement rides. Or so I've been told.
