Six Flags Magic Mountain

Talk about anything that has to do with the amusement park industry here.
Postby themanoftheland8 on November 12th, 2004, 8:44 pm
I was wondering about Six Flags Magic Mountain. Has anyone been there? If so, how good is X. All the coasters there look awesome, and I'm trying to plan a trip out there next year.

Well, I have vever been there, only passed it on the freeway while in CA, but I can tell you how much of a disgrace this park is from reading about it from other trip reports and topics:

1. X isn't all it's hyped up to be (from what I've read)

2. SFMM is a one train op for mostly all of their coasters

3. They claim to be xtreme with 16 coasters when they only have like 6-7 open year round becuase of maintence nightmare

4. Many flats are always closed (Metro and their Sky Cabin thing for 2 examples)

5. The staff is very unfriendly/ not too happy to work there

I'm sure I could come up with more, but I've always wanted to go there too, but after I've heard the stories, it made me think twice about visiting. However, it doesn't stop you from going there though.

Wow, strong words for somebody who has never been to the park before!

First of all, X was all it was hyped to be and more for me.

When I was there the only rides with one train op was Riddler's Revenge, and Batman. From what I've read in frightfest TR's Riddler's Revenge was open with two trains, still don't know about Batman. Superman: The Escape has reopened after a very long SBNO period.

True that they usually don't open all their flats (metro and sky tower are never open) and yes, a few of their employees didn't look too happy to be there. Honestly after an entire day there I was so happy and had a great day! I would recommend this park to anyone but whatever you do don't go to the park on a Saturday. While passing it on the expressway there was a backup of atleast a quarter/half mile to get off the expressway at the Magic Mountain exit.

1. X is superb, that's a definite.
2. Probably very unlikely one will find coasters using all their trains.
3. 6-7 is an X-TREME understatement. But never go to Magic Mountain expecting all the coasters to be open. At least one of (Deja Vu, Flashback, Superman, and Flashback) will be closed. Maybe a small number of others, especially during the winter.
4. Yep.
5. Likely very indifferent, for sure.

Although they really shouldn't be, they have a good reason. Magic Mountain is in the middle of a freakin' desert. You prolly wouldn't be to happy if you had to stand in the heat pressing buttons. It still isn't acceptable, though. BUT! i've been to the park about five times (used to live out thar) I don't think I've noticed any really disgruntled park employees.

Riddler's Revenge is the greatest stand up i've been on, but the queue is really confusing...

X is an awesome ride. The only ride that has every been worth the two hour wait....occasionally worth the four hours.

Goliath is freakin' awesome. Whooo! Blackout every time! Intense helix, man.

Collosus....it's still good.....it's like visiting your grandmother....you know....you don't really wanna go wait in line, but you gotta...

Superman....wanna ride it so bad.

Batman...well....you know....its the same out here....

Deja Vu out there, somehow, is more smooth...weird....

Psyclone hurts like hell....don't ride it.

Gold Rusher...not bad for their first coaster. Some nice drops on that one.

Scream was great. Especially front row. If you go there, ride up front on Scream.

Viper is awesome, but it gets a bit hard to fit in it for me, but it's still great.

Ninja....eh....s'allright.

I do have to say I'm upset that Flashback is never freakin' open! It's also way out of the way of everything else. Until this summer, I had no idea how to get to it.

That moose lodge thing was not bad....eat there if you get hungry....

If you go in the summer, though, bring alot of water...

freefell is pretty intense for a short drop.......

what else can i say....oh...parking there is only eight bucks instead of ten....uhh....on the way from the parking lot to the park, you can get wet from the people going down water slides at Hurricane Harbor....

did I miss any rides?

uh....did I mention X is awesome?

Yeah, Magic Mountain is worth it. Every little bit of it. Go there. Now.....or...whenever....

I went there in 2001 when all the stuff was new but I didnt get on X. I only had one day there and it was packed so I only got on half the coasters. Sadly X had a 4 hour plus line all the way until closing so I didnt bother to go on it. Everything I did ride I liked and I liked my park experience. Its also a great park to take pictures.

I've been there twice and the first time was aweful.
X was closed, got on Phyclone (oww), revolution, and Superman, when in line for Riddler's revenge, my sister got a chronic nosebleed, took an hour for her to get better, then she left and my dad and I went on collosus and goliath

Anyone who goes there should avoid Psyclone. Its a waste of time and its very painful. I know I wont ride it when I go there next month.

It's so deciving too. It looks like it would be like Viper, but it's at the opposite side of the spectrum

So true! When I went on it for the first time I sat in the backrow and had what I thought was going to be a crazy airtime filled ride.

I guess thats what I get.

Same with me. So I go with my friend. My brother goes but he barely goes at all.

Anyways... I've been dying to go to Magic Mountain for years now, and I've had 1000s of dreams of me riding X. Even though I've never been on it...

back when X was first open, I didn't want to ride it b/c i thought the spinning was unpredictable like the zipper or tilt-a-whirl, but when i learned of the four rail system I got interested, been there twice with it open but I just wont wait four hours to ride it..
I'd rather be riding the Voyage

X is definitely was all it's hyped up to be. It's a incrediable ride unlike any other coaster around. I was able to get on it 4 times during my visit there last August, 2 of those times I had to wait about 3 hours to ride it and it was well worth the wait. Not to mention it's got to be the coolest looking coaster there is to see when you pull up to the park.

I got lucky when I was there and besides X and Batman The Ride most the rides were running 2 trains at least....with Scream and Viper running 3. But I have heard this year they have been running 1 train on just about everything besides X.

Overall I had a fun time at Magic Mountain, it's not the best run park but alot of there coasters are great. If it was run better it could easily be one of the best amusement parks anyhow.

My suggestion if you go, is to go into the park not expecting to ride all 16 coasters, because I don't think all 16 coasters have ever run at once there. I never even saw all 16 coasters during the 3 days I was at the park (couldn't find Canyon Blaster). I was able to ride 12 out of the 16 and came away happy (Vu, Flashback, Goliath Jr. and Canyon Blaster I didn't get to ride there.).

If you do end up going out to Southern California to Six Flags Magic Mountain, I would make it priority to also visit Knott's Berry Farm which is about an hour away from SFMM. It's coaster lineup might not look all that impressive but it really is a great park, it was my favorite park in SoCal.

SFMM is my home park and yeah its worth a visit, i recomend it for the rides but the exprerience isn't the greatest. There is never a time that all 16 coasters are open, except once last year. If you want to be able to ride all the coasters it will take atleast 2 days, even if its empty they will run everything on 1 train op so it will take atleast 2 days. And its true about Sky Tower and Metro never open, those rides have been down for 4 years now. Flashback is rumored to be closed for a long time if not for good.About X, I think its the best coaster ive ever been on, its so intense and disorienting! Avoid Psyclone like everyone else said too, unless you like to be beat up. About bad employees, I havn't had any bad experiences with any but they just don't care about anything, have no motivation to be happy.Another word of advice is the typical avoid saturday rule. Well hope you have an enjoyable time there. Like others have said, you should definitely hit Knott's, its a little better than Sfmm, and plus Silver Bullet opens soon. :D

Okay...
Have you ever been to Six Flags Magic Mountain. NO! if you have never been there dont trash talk it!! Six Flags Magic Mountain has better staff that at GA i can tell you that for sure. When i went to MM there was NO one train operation, apart from the rides that have no choice.
Dont get me started on X. X is the worlds BEST coaster, it gave me more of an adrelian rush than any ride at great america combined.
and lastly they have only had one coaster closed when i went ther and that was Flash back.

So SFGAMkid. Dont talk trash about SFMM unless YOU HAVE BEEN THERE okay, and dont belive those stupid trip reports, people make them 10 worse than they actally are.

^Whoaaa cowboy, we get your point and we believe that they have atleast 2 train op on the rides that have it possible...

Thanks all. I was planning to go over Christmas break next year. Would it be busier or emptier then, does anyone know? Also, how many coasters would be open?

It will be pretty busy, because there are lots of kids on winter break then. Its open on weekdays when the LA schools have days off. The rollercoasters that should be for sure down will be Flashback(most likely), Ninja (it will be too cold for it to operate) and well you won't be missing much so you should still have a good time. But beware, right now Ninja(if it even is open when you go), Batman, Viper, Gold Rusher(maybe), X(only on weekdays), Scream, and Psyclone are all in 1 train operation. Hopefully it wont be that bad next year. The coasters that will have 1hr.+ waits will be X, Batman, Goliath, Deja Vu, Riddler's and everything else should be under a half hour wait, so waits arnt too bad then.

Hope you will have a great time despite all these 1 train operations! :)

Well, For my time when I went to sfmm. I would give it a 7.5 out of 10. Yeah, alot of their rides aren't always open but you have to realize that the park is soooooo frickin huge. So sure staffing would be a problem. As for X, I wouldn't know how to review it because I went when they had all of the problems so havn't gone on it yet. I will end up going back to the park though. Plus, Knotts Berry Farm is pretty close by too. So you do have other options if you don't like it. Their Deja Vu is a great ride. Goliath helix, wowzers...... anyways, good park. But I like it better home. SFGAM :D Illoinis's RollerCoast.
Watch out theres a new Hurricane in Gurnee, IL!
