Visit http://greatadventurehistory.com/GASM.htm for a wonderful tribute page to the Great American Scream Machine. I never got to ride Steel Phantom, but have been fortunate enough to ride Shockwave, GASM, and Viper and really enjoyed all of them and it is truly sad to see this breed of coasters fading away. Also, as a SFGAm guy for many years, it was a truly bizarre but fantastic sight to walk through the parking lot and see SUF and a Shockwave clone operating right next to eachother. Hopefully Viper continues to operate for many years.
If they just let the pieces fall, then I'm sure It's for scrap metal. Isn't this a good opportunity for some TLC on Demon? Couldn't this help head banging because the steel is far less 'used'?
They're just ripping it out. If you check the Facebook they posted pics of a tangled up brake run and transfer track. Its most definitely being sold for scrap.
:'( You just don't do that to a coaster! You don't just rip it out like that! LITERALLY RIPPING IT!
But, what is fun is hearing the horribly loud bangs when they just let the track fall. But still, cruel. That better not happen to Wolfie, or I will bleed me heart out!
Demon isn't really in that desperate need of help track-wise. The only semi-uncomfortable parts are the loop exits [back row] and going into the 1st corkscrew there is that slight jerk clockwise.
Demon did replace a small section of track a few years ago due to it being corroded from the waterfall, which I don't think has even been on since then. Also Ninja at SFSTL's chain in a large chunk of Shockwaves old chain. After SW was removed the red Shockwave train was sent to GADV to be used for parts and the blue/yellow sent to SFMM, so it wouldn't surprise me if any parts from GASM made its way to SFGAm or SFMM.

It says they had 3 trains on rcdb.com, but on impri, it says they are selling 2 trains plus you have the Shockwave train that is over there. Did they get rid of the one of the trains for Great American Scream Machine, and Shockwave's train is a replacement? If that's the case, they are still going to keep one. Shockwave had 3 trains, and how many does Magic Mountain have for Viper? Did SFGAm keep one for Demon?
Remember Great Escape also has an Arrow coaster. I just wonder how many more of these older rides are going to go away with Six Flags. And I can understand why. Their popularity has gone down overtime, and with each new thing, people want to go on those instead. The problem I see with Six Flags though is that with Shapiro, his new idea with younger kids rides were the mouse coasters. And to me these can't compare with looping coasters in which some of these are for younger kids, and treated as their first looping coaster. Demon is a stepper up coaster, and was probably a lot of people's first looping coaster around here, and you need something not totally tramatizing for the younger kids for their first looping coaster. You take Rockin Roller Coaster, and it doesn't do that much. It goes upside down twice.
I think Six Flags should start looking for a roller coaster with inversions, but not so many, and the ride doesn't have to be the highest to replace these older rides that are losing their appeal, and are rotting away stepper up rides for younger kids before getting on the Batman the Rides, and Scream! .
Look at all the old rides Six Flags has like the bobsleds at Over Texas, and Great Escape; Demon, Shockwave at Over Texas, the mine trains at Over Georgia / St. Louis / Magic Mountain / Over Texas (The Mine Train at Over Texas is really old - 1966), the Arrow at Great Escape, who knows about the Ninja at Magic Mountain (because Busch Gardens got rid of theres because of parts issue), who knows about Revolution at Magic Mountain, Viper at Magic Mountain, Whizzer, and so on. And for wooden rides, it's so much easier just replacing wood, and getting trains for a wood ride than spending major money for a steel coaster. Sure, they can figure a way to keep a ride for as long as they want, but it's about putting money into something that if it's not getting enough business, they feel it's better space for something else.
I mean think about it. Shockwave is gone, Great American Scream Machine is gone, they redid Space Mountain at Disneyland completely, Laser at Dorney Park is gone, Zonga is gone at Discovery Kingdom, and they didn't feel like keeping Double Loop from Gaugea Lake. Not only that, but you seen what these parks have been doing with old Intamin Generation Drop Tower 1 rides - junkyard except the Dorney Park one which is just a dumb idea in my opinion.
You hear rumors about Whizzer, and Disaster Transport at Cedar Point going bye-bye. I say just enjoy these old rides while they are still there because don't be surprised if they get replaced especially if you find them walk-ons while the other rides are getting 30 minutes during the same day.

^I know they did, but you never know what the new management might do. How many more years is it going to take to refurb that ride? Didn't Shapiro say it's like a 5 year project, and maybe this new guy doesn't care about doing that project anymore. I look at it as whether or not it's performing to Six Flags expectations. If it's not getting enough line, they could yank it out any year, and they don't really care if some enthusiasts say it's the greatest ride in the world. It's about numbers.
Me personally, I like that ride, and I hope they don't yank that ride out. I rather them yank Titan out for something better, and I know they won't do that, but I'm just saying they can do what they want to do.

Demon doesn't have the need for a spare train. Train 3 was fully rehabbed for last year and train 1 was done for this year.
I see what you are saying about transition rides. The intensity gap is growing larger with each older, "unpopular", ride being removed. A new ride doesn't have to be some complex, expensive investment and I hope this "reorganization of funding" is going to help establish that concept. We need a solid ride that can be enjoyed for generations.
Shapiro said that they had a three year plan. First Families, then Children, and then Thrills. We were so lucky as to get something like, Children, Family, Family.
^ That is exactly what Raging Bull is. It wasn't out-of-the box thinking, that is exactly what we need. Nobody is asking for a B&M Multi-D coaster, or something uber fancy. In fact, I would have loved to see GASM put in at Great America with a HUGE makeover from S&S. Just don't touch the Chain Lift, I love the sound of an Arrow chain lift.
Yeah, not having a thrill to look forward to next year has made me really depressed. I mean, I love me some Ferris Wheels... but, what else is there to try at our park?
^ I was also thinking about that a few days ago. Like, all this time we've been excited because we're getting a new coaster. And then, it just get's ripped out from under us. They almost basically said that we don't deserve it.
I know you didn't mean it, but I wouldn't say I'd take it personally and feel we don't deserve it. It was just such a let down. I didn't feel angry with the park, because we were so bent on getting it... but, I almost feel like there's not too much to brighten the "Great America" name anymore. I love our park, but we got jipped out of something major we could embrace. It's okay to see additions like Ferris Wheels/expansions... but, without anything big for a while my experience grows extremely dull and I lose the excitement of saying, "yeah we just got this awesome new ride". I couldn't say that about Dark Knight, Battle, Dipper, or "Big Wheel".

Awful idea and thankfully people in power agree.
I love how this thread, like all others, has turn into "my park doesn't get a thrill ride every year "
Believe me - you guys don't want Scream Machine. As a patron of this ride, believe me when I say that that thing was horrible. People glorify it now that it's gone, but it was one of the most two-faced rides I'd ever been on. Sit at certain seats, and even certain SIDES of the train, and you get a completely different ride. Sometimes it runs fast, slow, rough, not-so-rough, but it was bad. Whenever I had a good ride, someone else would get off complaining about a headache.

It was bad. You don't want it.
There are some people that glorify Shockwave on this website even though other people were in misery while riding Shockwave, so they would love to take it. What I don't like is that they are taking this ride down NOW instead of waiting till at least the beginning of September. Why take this ride down in July, and August which are some of the busiest days of the year? Some people that maybe didn't know the ride was leaving because they don't worry about coasters that much like we do could have come late July, and not be able to go on it because it's already gone. I just don't agree with them taking it down so fast. We had Shockwave taken down, and our B&M which was new was open about the time it should have been.
Here's the site that has the Great American Scream Machine for sale so no one has to bring that up again: http://www.irmpri.com/product.htm Again, how many trains were there for this ride? I never got a real answer. I know Shockwave had 3, but than Shockwave trains were distributed to other Six Flags.
