While, I have been on record saying I hated the park, and i really did....
I raise this question:
Did Six Flags' neglect of the smaller market parks seal the fate for Astroworld?
While hardly in a small market, Astroworld lacked the drawing power of say SFGAM or SFMM, It also lacked a signature attraction that could draw throngs of people to the park.
Take a look at the Rides that are going in at Other SF parks...
Tatsu at SFMM, Does this park really need ANOTHER rollercoaster when its Sky Tower and another coaster dont even run?
I mean given the obvious issues with space at Astroworld etc etc (which is the problem at any parks) Wouldnt a better decision have been to add these new collossal rides at the smaller parks?
I mean when was the last time any of the Flagship Park's closing crossed your mind?
Astroworld had nothing to attract new customers.
What year did S.W.A.T. come? '03-'04? If anything, that kept guests for half a season. That's the kind of ride you add in a package. But that was the park that could have made it if they even had a mediocre coaster for the people.
Yeah the smaller parks need more. Six Flags would develop so much more cash flow if they just invested a little bit into some of the smaller parks. A new coaster here or there, and a few new flats, and themed areas. I mean not that I dont like it, but we get all the new stuff, and the other HUGE parks do. Then Six Flags ignores the smaller parks, and gives them like a new food stand or something. It would really help Six Flags and its money problem if they invested some into the smaller parks.
Season Passes killed Astroworld, on average at any given time 50-75%+ of the people in the park were season pass holders, and most of them were basically teenagers. The park was a babysitting service that cost parents a mere $43 a year, while the teens would trash the park, not spend any money, scare away families (park had such a bad reputation in the area), and cause trouble in general (lots of gangfights, during firght fest when I was there a few years ago, every single queue in the park had no less than 3 cops watching over it to prevent trouble).
That is what ended up killing the park.
(also there are infrastructure problems there, but if the park was performing as it should, fixes could have been made easily)

It kind of came as a shock when i read the Houstin times the weekend that it was closing. The people kept talking about how big and fast the Serial Thriller was. It really makes you grateful for Great America.
