Oblivion

Talk about anything that has to do with the amusement park industry here.

Oblivion at Alton Towers may have to be removed - on account of inconvenienced neighbor.
http://www.coasterforce.com/
Also, neighbors around Mr. Ropers factory may sue him for being inconvenienced neighbor.

Crazy.

I think theres no way it's being removed, probably Maliboomer scream shields or Cali Screamin' shields.

Alton Towers has always had trouble with neigbors (blockades etc..) Their Gigantic proposed 2006 woodie may also be shot down.

...also don't forget about Thunder Looper, which was torn out due to inconvenienced neighbor who lived x amount of miles away.

Wow, just read the article. Oblivion is 3 miles from his house...Do you really think the guy could hear screams of riders that far away?

Yeah, its lal woods, but its not like it would be all that loud. Nothing unbearable. The removal of 1 coaster wont do to much.

Also the article stated that he was near the entrance of the park. Shouldn't he be complaining about the noise of Nemesis, instead of Oblivion?

Do you honestly that they are going to remove a $7 mil ride after 5 1/2 years of flawless operation when it still draws a card and is a one of a kind ride in europe, and most of the world?

if anything the will close it down for a while while they figure out how to make it quieter. There are several (relatively) inexpensive options to make the ride quieter such as:

1) make a deal to run the ride only durring certain times(11am-6pm)
2) installing "Silent" anti-rollback devices similar to the ones on MF
3) retrofit the ride with magnetic breaking. No friction = no noise.

and along the more expensive routes to take:
1) Fill the supports and track with sand Similar to what KBF does. Reduced Vibrations = reduced noise.
2) purchase the nearby houses and property near by. Which will Solve this issue and decrease the likely hood of it happening again with other rides.

Don't count on seeing it removed until Alton Towers has looked and considered all the other possibilities

Edit: It appears that it isn't just Oblivion
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,3604,1274717,00.html

It appears that of more concern is the noise from Corporate outings and concerts, the fireworks display, and the PA system on Oblivion.

I also found out that oblivion is already filled with sand.

I dont think anybody thinks it is going to happen, especially with all the options they have, like you said.

Despite all of your solutions, it clearly says because of the noise of the riders screaming. Only thing I can think of to clear that up is scream shields (either on the seats, or Screamin' style ride covers).

Just tell people that they can't scream on the ride anymore. That will be a great solution.

I'm don't side with the neighboors but you should look at it from their point of view. Personally I wouldn't mind it, in fact I'd probably like it no matter how loud it may be.
You see I like the cubs and the white sox. If it came down to the world series I'd pick the cubs.

See, I don't think AT would have a choice. Over there(across the pond ), especially where Alton Towers is located, what the neighbors say, goes. That park has had numerous occasions of having to remove rides(or never getting to add them) just to make the neighbors, and the town, happy.

By the way, didn't they propose a woodie last year that got shot down? I know when they made the coaster proposal, thay had to present an exact number for the amount of trees that needed to be cut down for the new
ride. Strict!

And some people think that GAm's neighbors are nit-picky! :P
Finally Coaster Season!!

The only other coaster I can think of that has a sound problem is Flashback at SFMM. They just don't operate that during the summer. This isn't an option for AT. Maybe they can put up walls like they have on the expressway to cut down on sound. It's a shame that some people are so heartless and willing to go to court over anything.

I believe it's sad that the court system is that pathetic. Give people money for spilling coffee on themselves, and trying to close an amusement park is pathetic.

They're not trying to close Alton Towers. The Ropers(neighbors) just want the sound of the screams from Oblivion and the fireworks show, fixed.

Just to update ya'll, Alton Towers lost the court case. The judge went to the Roper's house and could see just how bad that Oblivion was to their living conditions.

It still may not mean the demise of Oblivion though. The main problem with Oblivion's sound to the Ropers was its holding brake. It may just not be there next year if you know what I mean.

Blah blah blah. Look, if they cant deal with a theme park worth billions, making some noise, and they choose to live by it...MOVE! Idiots. I wanna storm the court and say that. GO MOVE YA IDIOTS. Have Alton pay for the house and everyone is happy.

from the sound of the article, I think AT is just going to be asked to deactivate the pre drop holding "brake" which sounds like is the source of all the screams.

Though without that the ride will only be around 10 seconds long from the top of the lift to the final brakes. Lamest Ride Ever! :)

Without the break that ride is nothing. When I went on it, the best part of that whole ride was that meer (sp) 5 sec. before you drop into the tunnel. Without that, SSR will get better ratings. Have you ever heard any noise complaints from the people who live by SFGAm that made it to court? And they barely even live a mile away. :?

I'm surprised no ones complained about V2's worlds loudest clear signal starting up at 8am and the launch and holding brake both very loud and can be heard from far...
....fine with me.

My uncle lives near SFGAm. He says that all he ever could hear was Shockwave clicking as it went up the lift hill on a really quiet day.
