BAD Here are some dumb names. Some wouldn't be that dumb if they weren't used a million times. Goliath (What is a Goliath even) Wild Mouse Corkscrew * Cylcone* Mantis Wild Thing Shockwave* Boomerang* Wild One Lucy's Crabbie Cabbie Vortex Fly Big or Little Dipper* Sidewinder Wildcat* And the worst of all HURLER
Goliath (Hebrew: גָּלְיָת, Modern Golyat Tiberian Golyāṯ; Arabic: جالوت , Ǧālūt (Qur’anic term), جليات Ǧulyāt (Christian term)) known also as Goliath of Gath (one of five city states of the Philistines) is a figure in the Hebrew Bible (Christian Old Testament). Described as a giant Philistine warrior, he is famous for his combat with the young David, the future king of Israel. The battle between them is described in the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament and, more briefly, in the Qur'an.
The purpose of the original story was to show David's identity as the true king of Israel.[1] Post-Classical Jewish traditions stressed Goliath's status as the representative of paganism, in contrast to David, the champion of the God of Israel. Christian tradition gave him a distinctively Christian twist, seeing in David's battle with Goliath the victory of God's King over the enemies of God's helpless people as a prefiguring of Jesus' victory over sin on the Cross and the Church's ongoing struggle against Satan.[2]
The first Goliath, the one at SFMM, actually is themed (sort of). It was supposed to have a lot more theming than it ended up with but a lot of it was cut off the projects budget when Premier bought Six Flags from Time Warner (like Raging Bull, the concept was designed in the Time Warner era but built in the Premier era so a lot of the themeing was cut). The other Goliath's don't have much of a purpose to the name other than to signify that they are big.
Personally I really like sophisticated and ambiguous names/themes that reference something that makes you want to do some research, like Kumba and Alpengeist for example, not that there is anything wrong a simpler or classic name. I also really like when the name brings attention to the theme that is made to intimidate you. Rides like Nemesis and Th1rt3en are pretty effective at this. I also think Kingda Ka and Tatsu are pretty sweet names that go along with the theme really well. Dueling Dragons before the Harry Potter re-theme, that was about as close to perfect as i've ever seen with how it was executed, it's too bad it rarely ever had a line for people to enjoy it.
GOOD Deja Vu Mantis Texas Giant Mr. Freeze Joker's Jinx Superman Ultimate Flight Superman Ride of Steel Steel Venom Vertical Velocity Batwing Vortex Gold Rusher Maverick Raptor Cheetah Chase Scorpion Space Mountain Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Expedition Everest Two-Face: The Flip Side Thunder Hawk Viper Riddler's Revenge Dueling Dragons Dragons Challenge (make sense with Harry Potter) Incredible Hulk Beast Son of the Beast Backlot Stunt Coaster Mindbender Georgia Scorcher Flashback for a boomerang coaster Runaway Mountain La Vibora Flight of Fear
BAD Goliath Mine Train (SFOT) Magnum XL 200 - (Isn't that a condom, and an ice cream bar?) Whizzer (even though I like the ride) Wicked Twister Firehawk Millennium Force Gemini Blue Streak Kumba Hydra the Revenge Talon Sheikra (reminds me more of the singer, than the Sheikra animal thing) Serial Thriller Hollywood Rip Ride Rocket Mind Eraser Dominator Mean Streak Italian Job Stunt Track The Villain Corkscrew Boomerang Jester's Wild Ride (not a coaster, but anytime you say worst something, Jester's belongs in there!) ________________________ For me, I like more SF coaster names because they tend to be themed to things like DC where as Cedar Fair doesn't have the properties (except Snoopy), and have to come up with so many non-themed names.
And if I want to buy a ride t-shirt, I'm not buying a Kumba shirt. If that ride was called something better, I probably would buy a shirt of that ride because that's one of my favorite B&Ms besides Batman the Ride, but a Kumba? So, what they name stuff, affects their merchandise sales too. And Dominator for an amusement park? Who thought of that? It went from Six Flags Batman Knight Flight to Dominator, and what I'm shocked is, is that they still call it Dominator at another park - Kings Dominion. A Great name to an Dreaded name! It's still a great ride, but horrible name.
