It's tax time and that means a new TV for Asrealasitgets.....I'm just weighing my options at the moment. Right now I'm leaning towards a 32" Sony Bravia LCD 720p.....

What kind of TV do you have?
What kind would you suggest to stay away from?
Price range is 400-600.....
Thanks.
Have a take and don't suck, it's the Jim Rome Show!

What do I have? I have a Prima tv that has none of this lcd, plasma stuff, and I bought it from Circuit City (which is now closed). It's around 21 inches. I've heard twice now (from tv repairmen) that the plasma / lcd tv's need to be repaired a lot, and only last 5 - 6 years. I go to Six Flags Great America and I see the problems with those darn tvs. I've seen the repair guy last year working on the Batman the Ride tv.

To me, I just don't care about companies saying that these tv's are "quality" because the screen is so darn great and they say the old crt tvs are a load of junk. To me, the only tv that my friend had, actually had "quality", and it wasn't due to the picture even. It was the sound. It was a surround sound type of thing, and that felt like a real movie theater, but do I care to get a movie theater in my room? Nah. I go to the movie theaters so I don't have to wait for something to come out on dvd, and it's a social thing. You eat popcorn with a bunch of strangers around you, and you sit and watch a movie you think you are going to enjoy.

Like everything in technology especially, companies are always going to try and phase out the stuff that is cheaper, and try to get people interested in newer stuff (that to me isn't always better) so they can raise the prices on that stuff. If everyone has a dvd player, than people aren't going to buy them a lot, so you need to make something else for people to buy, and they can sell for so much more. Think about a blue ray player thing. You bought all these dvds before, and now they want you to buy those dvds again in blue ray format.

HDTVs have come down in price significantly in the past year. In your price range you won't be able to get a top of the line 120 hertz model, but you could definitely score a 36-42 incher that's a year or so old. Look for TV deals on tigerdirect.com or google hdtv deals for sites that watch department store ads to find the best deals. Just by shopping around for a month or so you can score a great TV for not a ton of money.

By the way, last March I bought a 40 inch Vizio 1080P tv from tigerdirect.com for 500 bucks shipped free. It was a refurb but it still works like a champ today. The hertz and contrast ratios aren't amazing, but I'll tell ya right now that HD material looks great on the thing, especially gaming. If its your first HDTV, you'll love whatever model you get.
