I saw a Blockbuster is closing in Vernon Hills, and I wonder do you rent from them, or where do you get your movies from? I haven't rent from them in awhile. It seems like even 2 years ago. I rent from Redbox, or there is a place that's called Lion Video. Another option is the library, or just on tv there are many movies.
The problem I have with Blockbuster is that it's too expensive for a new release. They charge you something like $5 maybe, but you get 5 days, but why do I need a video for 5 days. Why don't they charge like Redbox, and you can get a video a $1 a day, or they can charge a $1.50 a day because they have a little more selection? When your competition is doing something in which people like and you are losing people to them (Redbox), you have to adapt, and NOT just keep on doing the same things like you've been doing.
I like Halloween stuff, and I was looking at Factory Card Outlet, and Party City, and I noticed that a lot of things at one of those stores was like it's competitors. For Joanne Fabrics, and Michaels (just care about Holiday stuff at these stores), they both have the 40%, or 50% coupon because they are in competition with each other, but Blockbuster just doesn't want to compete, and they are going to go down if they don't want to compete.

Your right on the money. Overpriced for new releases, that is, if your lucky enough to get them. I stopped going once I found Netflix.
Also, its nice to see someone else who enjoys Halloween decorations as much as I do. Spirit, Card factory, Party City, all of those stores can be overpriced. I try to get a Micheals 50% coupon and see what I can get there.
If it walks like socialist, quacks like socialist, smells like a socialist, .... it's a socialist. Hope, and change we can believe in.
First, Redbox sucks. Second, Hollywood video is no longer Blockbusters main competition, it's NetFlix. They are kicking everyone's ass.
As far as too much? There is a monthly plan where you can rent as much as you want. So, you rent something, watch it, bring it back, rent some more, etc. Totally worth the money. Not even employees get that treatment.

Netflix 1 DVD out at a time with unlimited free streaming on my Xbox 360 onto my HDTV for 9 bucks a month? Yes please. In the past 2 months my roommates and I have burned through all of Heroes, Man vs Food, Dexter, and gobs of movies. Only bad part about the deal is that new releases generally won't get to you right away, and that I don't much care about.

In that link, there is a article about video rentals. They say:
"DVDs rented at these kiosk locations now account for 19% of all video rental activity." (like Redbox or the ones at Dominick's) & "Presently, subscription based video-by-mail services account for 36% of all videos rented by consumers, compared with a 45% share for rentals purchased at physical store locations" (Netflix, Blockbuster has in the mail thing too)

Because of my current employment, I'm not allowed to agree with you.
However, I wouldn't agree on not caring about new releases. But movies are very important to me.

RedBox used to be even better when they'd text you a code for a free movie rental every single monday. Now it's just the first monday of every month. I always liked redbox, there are at least a dozen redboxes within about 10 mins of my house, and if I go online I can see what videos are in which machine. Usually I can find just about anything I want.

Like Director Guy, I too am employed by Blockbuster. Our store is closing, close-out sales all week blah blah.
Money-wise. Yes, Netflix, Redbox, and all that other good stuff is the great way to go financially. Red Box has a very limited supply. Every kiosk around here is usually out by three o'clock of anything that came out that day, and usually isn't easily available until a week after when you probably don't care about it anymore. Same with Netflix. Movie comes out, you throw it in your queue, it could be a month until you get the damn thing.
When you go to a rental store any pay that expensive price, you're paying for the fact that you are getting that movie right away. Most Blockbusters don't rent out of big titles anymore, so its easily available if you want to see that movie the day it comes out.
Like Lundy said, you pay 21.99 a month, you get all the movies you want. No limit. Rent one, bring it back, exchange it. We have people that have been on that program for a year and have over 600 rentals already.
You can't stream everything on Netflix.
AND finally. Blockbuster is releasing it's own version of Redbox on the East Coast. There's around 100 units out there testing already.
Now that I'm done promoting my shitty company....
Netflix is good for someone without any time on their hands. The person that comes home from work and will NOT leave the house again under any circumstances.
Redbox is not what the frequent renter wants to do. Most of the Redbox customers around here raid it for one particular movie and dont go back to that kiosk for around two months. I'll confess, I've gone to redbox a few times. We cant rent movies in the first 22 days they are out. So if I missed one I'll just grab it at midnight.
How much is Blockbuster selling old dvds right now (the one that is going out of business)?
For redbox, I want to rent X-Men Origins movie, and I see it right now in at 5 locations. My only complaint about Redbox is that they don't have a huge selection of movies even though they have just new releases mostly.

Through Sunday is could be anywhere from 3.99-9.99 However, prices get cut down again Monday. But keep in mind, the later you come, the smaller the selection.
It's pretty crazy actually. I've rang up a few people with $500+ alone in movies and games. That's not counting any fixtures or other items (frame art etc.) they may have purchased.
