What's really funny, is that you think I'm from the GP (General Public). When indeed, I most likely know far more about the coaster, as I've rode it multiple times.
UER? I frequent that site as well, once in awhile the Great Lakes group does meetups at some of these places, usually in Chicago or Gary. Definitely do not go alone.

I'll believe it when its up, running and everything else.
Mayor kellogg is a crook. He got a lot of money from the feds to help rejuvenate harvey. He's under investigation to see where that funds went.
I mean look at the market of harvey. How many people do you think would really go there? If anything, it would just be converted into a stripmall full of sharks chicken, payday loans, cash for gold and liquor stores. Check out any of the local area malls and they are all dying (especially the matteson one, chicago ridge is doing well and orland square is always doing amazing). River oaks is on its last legs, they wanted to change the old 8/9 movie theater into a comedy club. Let's see how far that goes. (I believe the property is on the Calumet City side so yeah, another low prosperity area).
This is just like what happened in Hammond, Indiana. They demolished the woodmar mall and now someone else bought the land and made huge promises to mayor McDermitt that they'd redo that land. Now all that stands is one anchor store. Seriously CPS stands alone as a random anchor in the middle of a leveled lot.
Honestly, i would like for the climate and economy to become better in harvey, but when you got cops working for 10 dollars an hour and a "protection system" going on, there aint nothing going to be done significantly with that land.

I went back to Dixie on Sunday, just in case this really is the end. Most of the pics are of every store; 1 exterior and 1-3 of each store's interior. Those I havent started on yet.
Very interesting trip; no dogs despite a recently-left dog cage, ran into another explorer in Block D, and a nice guy walking down 151st street struck up a conversation with us as we were walking out of Penneys, asking about dogs being in there.

I've got 2 done but I'm moving slow on the rest. This was a fun visit, a popup storm hit Gary about 10 minutes after getting in; it later hit South Bend with 70mph winds. It was making the Palace's roof rumble, and just after I shot the second pic it began POURING inside, and we had to run under the balcony without tripping over the debris or falling through one of the ventilation holes in the floor.
After regrouping, we poked around some of the areas under the balcony (all we found were a stash of moldy theater seat backs), then checked out the apartments until the rain stopped.

The bad news is someone got out with the projector remnants, and the chair up in the projection booth. Actually, as I'm looking at one of my pics, one of them looks like it's now parked in the seating area on the ground floor. I remember they were heavy as Hell, so someone had help. Some of the ruined film and rusted film canisters are still up there, though.

One thing I've never understood was this. How does the roof of a building like that begin to collapse on itself? I mean, just because there is no one in the building, if everthing is left intact, how does it get thet bad?
Did you ever get any shots of Randhurst mall abandoned? That would have been cool. The first indoor mall in the USA is now becoming an outdoor mall...

Lack of maintenance. Water will do some nasty things to an unmaintained roof... wood will rot, steel will rust, concrete will crack... especially if it freezes, it will cause any gaps the water gets caught in to expand and just allow more water to leak inside. If you look at the Palace, it had its main roof and then a suspended decorative ceiling. The roof is obviously in bad shape, and once the water hits the plaster ceiling it just crumbles.

Yes, I was there on its closing day back in 2008, taking pictures. I've got one of the original 1962 mall directories. Really a fascinating structure, it's too bad they butchered it when they added Costco and that "grand entrance", which was really just half of the old Montgomery Ward department store.
A demo worker left a door unlocked, and someone got in and took pics during its early stages of demolition, which I thought was awesome: http://www.flickr.com/photos/39851200@N04/

They're back as an online retailer, but unless you have a damn-good memory how could you miss it or even remember it? You're only like 14-15 IIRC. I don't even remember going there, their stores went bust almost 10 years ago.
